Let's talk clothing.
May 3 2011, 2:01 PM EDT
So, as one may guess, attire will be a key part of SHTF survival. Everything from ballistic armor, to environmental hazards, to camoflauge, this thread is out to help YOU find your perfect ensemble.Take into consideration many factors when picking your outfit, as you may come accross a niche you need filled that you need filled that it doesn't fill(example: bulletproof helmet doesn't block blood splatter). Another thing this thread can provide is a place to compare and contrast. Leather vs. nylon, skater helmet vs. bike helmet, midieval vs. modern. So, let's get start started. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

"honestly im gonna have my military BDU's, my brown undershirt, and my gortex millitary issued boots but thats all i can think of right now as i think of more ill ad them."Yes, but what environment are you working in? How about gloves? Face/head protection? Plus, what about raiders, both the ones with and without guns? Do you find this valuable? |

I am currently watching Cut-Tex Pro clothing. It appears to be quite scarce which probably means expensive.Do you find this valuable? |

Probably one of my most treasured articles of clothing post Z-day, is my treated canvas duster. Go ahead, laugh if you want. It's tough enough to keep me from being bitten, but light enough that i can wear it anywhere shy of 80 degrees. It can be a blanket, a stretcher, a temporary shelter, a spare bag; or just folded, rolled, and clipped back into my pack. Most of my other clothing articles will be covered, or even beaten to death, so that's my contribution.. I really don't think what kind of clothing a person wears, it isn't like BDUs, or any tacticool clothes are going to help you survive any better than Jeans and a shirt. A lot of people put to much emphasis on military clothing, there's a reason why the military keeps huge inventories of clothing available at all of it's base. They are just not that resistant to rips, cuts, and tears.

Of course, adjust the colors to your terrain. Do you find this valuable? |

Most of the environment around me BOL is forested. Most of my clothing I have stock piled is surplus woodland camo BDUs. I think most of them are the cotton variant. Which is very comfortable, especially in the summer. If I dig around enough I think I have some NyCo blends, they're a little heavier but they're tougher and they dry faster. The NyCos aren't very comfortable though. I may have one pair of PolyCo, but I don't know where they are right now. Those are light like cotton and dry like NyCo. I'm also working on getting some MarPat PolyCo BDUs. I'll be wearing some nylon load bearing equipment as well. For protection I'm ordering some Alta knee and Elbow pads...whenever I get around to it. Head gear? I don't really like having anything that gets in my FOV, so probably a ball cap or my OD bandanna. I truly don't see where it would matter much. After a couple of days of walking even if your wearing bright orange it will be dirty and blend in naturally. Personally my main load out clothing are: Pants - jeans, tough, replacements are readily available, and inexpensive. Shirts - T-shirt and long sleeve shirt, possibly jacket. Boots - Tall Woods hiking boots. Unmentionables - standard (boxer/briefs, tube socks) For a time I will more than likely wear cloths for some time, or throw cloths away for scavenged clean cloths, or find a place with plenty of water and safety to wash cloths. So to me clothing is expendable and replaceable.. Do you find this valuable? |

Oh, and for foot wear I have an old pair of Die Hard boots. They're decent but I'm probably going to buy some Altama boots to replace them.

Carhart jacket, jeans, t-shirt, socks and Redwing boots. All topped off with whatever lid I can get my hands on. Brimmed cowboy hat in the summer, Carhart sock cap in the winter. A baseball cap any other time of the year. You 'aint going to see me in anything but my everyday clothes. They work now, they'll work then. Anyone disagree? Do you find this valuable? |

It works alright. The BDUs are a little more functional for my environment though. I get my stuff used so I never pay much. Do you find this valuable? |

Pants: Jeans or cargo pants. I have fleece-lined pairs of both.Shirts: T-shirts or long-sleeve shirts. Jackets: Light fleece, hoodie, heavy fleece, ski jacket, or some combo of the first three. Feet: Wool or cotton socks. I don't care how much you bash cotton, I'm actually more comfortable in them. I sweat less, even in winter months. Hiking boots or sneakers. So, really, nothing that I don't wear every day. Do you find this valuable? |

We've sorta been over this before.Anyone mentioning wearing ballistic armor, motorcycle helmets or plate carriers will get called mall ninjas. Picking armor on the off chance that you will be confronted by raiders without firearms is kinda silly. Don't you think? I mean if you and yours are armed with firearms you should have nothing to worry about. *Raiders appear before you with samuri swords, fantasy knives and LOTR axes.* The leader proclaims, "Lay down your assault rifles, shotguns and hi-cap pistols and we shall spare your life." His followers go nuts, "Rabble, rabble, rabble". *Survivors look at each other in confusion* Lead survivor steps forward, "We have guns you ignorant a-hole. We will walk away from this confrontation dumber having heard your demands. We award you no points and may God have mercy upon your soul". Do you find this valuable? |
