I bought a 10-pack of those P-38s when I bought my canteen online. I put one on my key-ring and threw the rest in my nightstand drawer. I've only really used it to open boxes, though.

I already have the screwdriver, multiple flashlights and a multitool in my kit. And as it so happens, I just ordered one of these things: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/MIL1270-1.html from ebay yesterday so once it arrives that will take care of the fork and spoon. I've got P-38's scattered all over the house. I don't specifically know where any of them are exactly, as they're all kinda just tossed in random drawers or poked in random boxes, but I'll toss one in the bag next time I happen to come across one. So that just leaves me with the sunblock, the WD40 and a cheapie set of vicegrips. Do you find this valuable? |

I figured that way I would know were they were and wouldn't have to dig to find one. I just got back from Home Depot, while I was there I bought a 24 pack of AAA batteries for $4.99. There an off brand but listed for electronics use (low drain, even current), and don't expire until 3 / 2014. Do you find this valuable? |

Learn it, love it, live it. Second of all, the kit isn't complete yet, but is rather an ongoing work in progress. The point of this page is to assemble a Bug Out Bag on a budget, a little at a time ($10 per month), rather than having to go out a spend a lot of money to get it all at once, especially some of the more expensive items that you have suggested like the blackhawk boots. Also what W76K said about this being a survival kit, it is not the "Latest and Greastest Technology spend all your money kit" it is for people who have families and don't have a huge budget for survival gear 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Sing with me..."I Love eBay, even if eBay sucks" Slightly off subject because my example costs more than $10, but I hope you'll forgive me.I was reviewing the BOBs I assembled for me and my two (teen) kids and discovered one of the multi-tools I included was a cheap gimme with some plumber's name on it. I didn't have $40-50 to spend on a decent brand-name tool (still don't.) The cheap-o probably would do the job, but I wanted better, so I started eBay shopping. Here's the trick: DECIDE WHAT YOU'LL SPEND AND DON'T EXCEED IT, and you can find all sorts of stuff, cheap. I wanted a brand name tool for less than $20. It could be scratched and rusty, but had to have no broken parts. I started bidding on everything in sight, $15 max for those without sheaths, $20 max if they had a sheath. I lost about 20-25 auctions before I finally got two (2) flat black Gerber tools for $28.48 shipped. I bought two really stout Codura nylon sheaths for $9.96 shipped. Divide by two = $19.40 Turned out they were like brand new, scuffed from being carried around, but no actual wear on the pliers or the knife blade or the file, etc. I recently got Coleman brand, disposable, emergency ponchos for $1.08 and mylar emergency blankets for $.99 by being patient. I got a Meyerco "Blackie Collins" Necklance neck knife (look it up - awesome) and sheath for $7.94 shipped, when some people paid up to $21 in some of the auctions I bid on. You just have to be patient . Last story - when I was first working on my BOBs I wanted ALICE compass/first aid pouches, cheap. I looked, bid low, waited. I don't remember what I paid, but when I finally bought about dozen they were the cheapest I'd found and they came stuffed with GI field dressings, and all but two dressings were still sealed and sterile. Score! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I'm right there with you, I love me some ebay. I'm currently waiting on the arrival of about half a dozen items I've ordered off ebay, a few for this $10x12 BOB, and a few for the pocket sized mini survival kit I'm working on. I get whatever I can get locally for cheap, just because I don't like waiting on the shipping, but whatever would cost me more locally than the ordered price after shipping I get from ebay. With that said, though, I've never BID on a single thing on ebay ever. If the item doesn't have a reasonable Buy-It-Now price I just don't bother. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
