an all around rifle
May 14 2011, 1:26 PM EDT | Post edited: May 14 2011, 1:26 PM EDT
we always talk about "which is the best gun" or do you prefer "gun x or gun y?"

what i want to know is this, if you can only carry 1 long gun i.e. rifle/shotgun what would it be? thats not counting a sidearm.

im thinking a 12 ga pump shotgun. its a little heavier that alot of other long guns, but it is very versitile in its uses. i can hunt large or small game animals, and it is an excellent choice for self defense.

if i KNEW that i was going into a gunfight i would probably choose an AR15 or AK47 because of the high capacity magazines, ease of reloading and because thats what those rifles were made for.

if i could get a 12 shotgun that could hold 30+ rounds and had changable magazines, no question i would choose it for anything

"Saiga?"
The 8 round magazines are twice the size of a STANAG 30-rounder. Any box mags past that capacity are ungodly long, and drum magazines...well, they're drum magazines. Hueg.

It is the only 12 gauge shotgun I could think of which had changable magazines, and could have a 30 round mag (not including AA-12, which is overated). He didn't specify the size of the magazines.

AA-12!!

Get a pump action, easy to use and fast to load.

And shotguns are not rifles

Shotgun all the way.
If it was available, I would go with the KelTec KSG.

my feelings are the same. i feel like its the best all around weapon to have, when you cant bring more than one.

i just bought a 12ga because with all my other guns i felt like something very important was missing.

There is really no all around long gun.

Shot guns are good close range
Bolt actions are better at longer range, than short (one could use it for either)
Semi auto are good at both short and medium ranges
Lever actions are good at medium and long range, but could be used at short range

All gun systems have advantages and disadvantages with each other, it is "in my opinion", to have a varied weapons load out for a group.

Saiga's suck; "in my opinion", for the reasons:
1. price
2. price of magazines
3. weight of loaded magazines (in and out of the gun)
4. you can buy 2 to 4 pump shot guns for the cost of the Saiga and mags.

Well even though the OP won't stick to the title of his thread (LOL) I will.

You did say rifle, so I'll say a Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle.
http://www.ruger.com/products/gunsiteScoutRifle/models.html

It is a concept rifle following Jeff Cooper's scout rifle design. It is a bolt-action rifle using the M-77 Mauser style extractor with a 10 round detatchable magazine.

Its what I think of when I think of a general purpose rifle.

But if we're not going to follow directions a Mossy or Remmy pump with a box of choke tubes and a slug barrel would fit the general purpose defination just fine.

I would like a Remington 1187 or 1100, but yesterday my FB status was talking about a Fabarm, which was a pump, even with the amount of recoil I was still pretty fast with racking the action, I need to get myself a 12 GA pump, MUCH more variety of ammo, and quantity available

Ruger 10/22 ....You can carry lots of easy to find ammo , is accurate and while not super powerful is probably good enough for what you will realisticaly need a rifle for
I've killed everything from mice to deer with a .22 and I think probably close to an all around rifle you could choose

AR15, the universal American rifle. Parts, ammo, and magazines can all be found in abundance.

A 12 gauge Mossy 500 or Remmy 870 aren't bad choices either, together they probably take up a decent majority of the US shotgun market, parts and ammo for them won't be tough to find either.

I'm digging the Scout Rifle too.
I'd be tempted to say an AK, I've taken deer quite easily with the 7.62x39 before.
I'd also be very tempted to agree with Filadog on the Ruger 10/22 idea.
I think all three of the guns I mentioned would be good choices.
I'd actually say that a Marlin 336 carbine would be a great all around gun that anyone can own. It's a great hunting rifle for one. Nothing handles quite like a good lever action, so I think it would be excellent for defense. Those are the main things that I'd be concerned about, and the Marlin would to both fairly well.

I'll play.

No doubt a 16" AR15 type rifle.

There is no job it will not do. As long as you aren't defending your camp from a herd of rabid elephants you are covered. The .223 round will shoot further than 99% of people are capable of placing a shot, has high magazine capacity, fast magazine swaps, lethal, parts are easily sourced, can also fulfill the role of a CQB weapon, etc. etc. Some may disagree, but the AR15 is THE all singing all dancing rifle.

And really that's it.

I 2nd 2wheel and possum for the win.

Really there is just no comparison. The next upgrade for mine will be a better trigger though.
