Concealed Carry Wishlist
May 20 2011, 8:14 AM EDT
Despite the popularity of the words "gun," "firearm," "pistol" and other things, concealed carry is actually a topic that we don't address very much in our forums. In fact, the word "sword" comes up more (according to a threads search) and I find this kind of amusing, as swords are far less practical for personal defense, and against zombies.Anyways, I know that more than a few of us are CCW'ers, and I wanna hear what your thoughts are on the topic of CCW guns. Do you just pack a full size handgun? What's your feelings on sub-caliber guns? Is there anything in the market (or coming out soon) that you're just drooling over? Any gear upgrades in mind? I'll be honest, I'm looking to upgrade carry rigs, but I'm on a VERY tight budget. I'm planning on moving to Texas in September, and most of my money is invested in that transition. However, its usually when my budget is tightest that I fall in love with something pricy and just gotta have.... Last night, I was playing with my buddy's new RIA 3.5" 1911, and the holster he carries it in - Galco "King Tut" IWB - and I'm THOROUGHLY impressed by both. I wore the gun around his living room for a bit, and it was unbelievably comfortable to carry. Sure, it's no Kimber, Ed Brown, or Para, but the RIA is priced right. And, .45 is a considerable step up from my rather puny 9x18 Makarov.... Do you find this valuable? |

I've only left my house 3-4 times this year without a concealed firearm. Each time I was going out drinking, and felt it prudent to go without a gun. Other than that, I'm armed 24/7 when I'm out.I prefer service caliber guns (9mm/.38Spec and up). But I like them in compact or subcompact form for ease of carry/concealment. There are people who prefer to carry full sized guns, I'm not one of them. Being a 1911 guy, this points me towards Officers and Commander styled 1911s, similar to that RIA you were looking at. My current daily carry rig is a Colt New Agent (.45ACP) in a Don Hume IWB holster. I also have a Fobus paddle holster for open carry days. I'm still putting my new Springfield EMP-9 through it paces before I trust it for CCW. Luckily, it'll use the same holsters. Though it won't be for a looong time, I want a Colt Commander to add to my carry rotation. Overall I'm pretty happy with my setup, I just need to spend more time training. I'm not a fan of "mouse guns" except for certain situations. Mainly as backup guns and when you physically cannot conceal anything bigger. My Sig P238 and Galco pocket holster serves occasionally as a backup gun, and it's what I carry when I ride motorcycles. I chose the Sig because it's basically a mini-1911, so I already knew my way around the gun. RIA seems to have a decent rep in general, but how reliable are their Officers style 1911s? You probably already know that short barreled 1911s have an iffy reputation for reliability. Mine work fine, but they also cost me a bit more than an RIA would. Just a thought, I've never actually known anyone who owns one. If I bought one, I'd shoot the crap out of it before I trusted it on my hip. Do you find this valuable? |

Lucky Bastards.....If the laws here ever changes and I get an ATC, I would probably go with something that has a mid length barrel but a fairly short grip, why you ask? Because when you think about it with a hip carry, it is the grip that "Prints" that you are carrying. I'd have to shop around for what fit that criteria but I think I would want a pocket pistol like a Glock 26/27 as back-up. Does anyone know if the Glock 19/23 slide would fit on a 26/27 frame? Or a 17/22 would fit on a 19/23 frame? Do you find this valuable? |

"Lucky Bastards.....You reminded me that I also want a 1911 with an Officers frame and a Commander slide (I want a bazillion 1911s)... I believe both Sig and STI currently make something along those lines, I'll have to look into it. As for your question... I don't actually know. I have seen Glock guys with 19/23s actually cut the grip down to 26/27 size, and it works. And here's a guy who did just that with a G17, cut it down to G19 length. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=487611 Do you find this valuable? |

I use to carry a Derringer .357 double barrel or my S&W 686 4" .357 revolver if I was wearing a jacket in a chest rig. I recently upgraded my larger carry to a Glock 22, I still have the S&W (I will never give up my baby!). I also traded in my Derringer on a Keltec P11 9mm, subcompact pistol. I think it should be legal for every person who can legally buy a hand gun to carry it concealed or in the open. Sharpie ~ I truly feel bad for our neighbors to the North, but I do see how many in the U.S. government want to go in the same direction as your government has. I personally think those people have their heads in their Asses. Because criminals are still armed, but law biding citizens are the ones getting screwed. Do you find this valuable? |

If I was going to carry I guess I'd carry a snub-nosed revolver.I've never been crazy about concealed carry. I'd think it'd be about like a single dude packing a condom. The one time they'd need it would be the one time they left it in their sock drawer. I have however always packed a fixed blade knife on my hip right out in the open. I always have some kind of rifle or shotgun in my pick-up. Do you find this valuable? |

My choice for a concealed carry pistol would be an H&K P7. I think H&K has discontinued making them though. Of course there should be some still out there. In a zombie epidemic I would think that conceling your weapon would not be an issue, but feel free to do so. Do you find this valuable? |

I still see used ones all the time, but I know they're slowly getting harder to find because people realize they're collectors items and once they get their hands on one they never let them go. So if you want one, buy one now! Do you find this valuable? |

""Only" a Glock? Whats that supposed to mean? Theres nothing wrong with Glocks"It's a relatively affordable, easy to replace, piece of plastic. It's like chopping up an irreplaceable muscle car vs. chopping up a Honda Civic. (Hint, the Glock is NOT the muscle car...). Used Glocks are a dime a dozen because of police trade ins, my buddy got his for $350. IF I wanted to chop up a gun, it'd be a Glock. Do you find this valuable? |

Truth be told, I use a variation "Pascal's Gambit" to justify why I carry. It's better to have a gun at all times (and be uncomfortable) than to need it and not have it, because the price paid is going to be your life or the lives of people you love. I admit that a gun isn't necessarily going to solve a situation by itself, but it at least puts me in the game if I'm at QuikTrip getting gas and someone tries to rob me, or break into my home during the middle of the day, or use my friend's party for NoCo gang initiation ritual, or if I'm sitting at a bus stop and a zombie shambles up my way. =) However, I do respect those that choose not to carry, and I believe that there are certainly other avenues that one can use to avoid conflict. These steps should also be followed by those that carry too! I advocate that CCW'ers learn about conflict de-escalation, and avoid bad neighborhoods and conflict-rich environments (parties, bars, strip clubs, etc) and keep their head on a swivel. Additionally, I think that CCW'ers should consider staying (or getting) in shape and learning some form of unarmed self-defense, should their weapon become inadequate or ineffective for any reason because sh!t happens: guns run out of ammo and jam, and so on. Your body is a weapon too. To me, it makes no sense to carry a gun and not learn these things; courses in conflict de-escalation and *first aid* might help prevent wrongful incarceration by an anti-CCW DA in your self-defense trial, should you apply those skills. Your de-escalation attempts won't hurt the case, and you could provide emergency first aid to the guy in which you just put three or four holes after the bullets stop flying. Really? Yeah, I just suggested that - I don't care if he dies or not, I just wanted him to STOP. A murder doesn't try to save his victim's life afterward, and I'd like to see them prosecuted. Ok, first off I respect anyone's right to carry a firearm. I'm going to give my opinion on CCW and it might not be what you want to hear. Before anyone calls me a liberal or a commie remember, its me...Timber. I'm pretty damn conservative.Let me tell you a story about a trapper friend of mine. I asked Mike why he drove a two-wheel drive pick-up when he runs his trap lines. It would seem like a no brainer to me for him to drive a four-wheel drive since they go through mud better. He asked me, "How many deer hunters did your Dad have to pull out of his fields last year?" I said, "Four". He said, "How many of them were driving four-wheel drives?" I said, "All of them". He smiled and said, "If them boys would have been driving two-wheel drives they wouldn't have attempted to go through that mud would they?" I said, "No, probably not". I believe that carrying a concealed handgun can make you like one of those guys in the four-wheel drives. Over-confident and not afraid to go places that you shouldn't. My Dad had a long talk with me not long after I let him know I had purchased my first handgun. I've been driving a two-wheel drive pick-up ever since. He's never had to pull me out of the mud either. Does my opinion matter to you? Maybe not but I just want to throw that out there. A handgun can get you in more trouble in 5 seconds than you can get out of in a lifetime. I don't trust our messed up legal system enough to conceal carry a firearm. Common sense has left the courthouses of this country. Do you find this valuable? |

A lot of people hold an opinion similar to yours Timber. And I have talked to a million guys who've said something along the lines of "I have too bad of a temper to carry a gun, I'd shoot the first guy to cut me off in traffic". I respect your position, and theirs, but it's not the one that I hold (obviously).I won't lie, I'm a pretty calm and laid back guy overall. I never worried about shooting someone who ticked me off. But if anything, I've found that carrying a firearm is a moderating influence on me. I DON'T want to be involved in even a legal shooting because of that messed up legal system you mentioned and I'd rather walk away then whip out my pistol. A fistfight is nothing, a shootout is some serious sh!t to be involved in. My attitude is best described by this quote... "Your number one option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.". I have no problem looking like a scared sh!tless b!tch and walking away from a fight. The other guy will never know I had the power to blow him away. I am not interested in a you-know-what measuring contest, I carry a gun because I want to go home and see my family at the end of the day. A gun is a tool, 4WD is a tool. YOU are the one who lets yourself get out of control because you feel invincible with those tools. The tool does not exert some kind of magic psychic influence on your brain. It's a matter of having the right attitude. My father has had a concealed carry permit for years, he's most likely the reason I decided to start carrying. Do you find this valuable? |
