Making a game
May 26 2011, 3:05 PM EDT
Hello everyone. I'm planning to make a 3D zombie survival game. I think I will be doing it in dark basic to start with, right now I mostly need to discuss my ideas and stuff like that. I really want it to be a multi player game, but I will start by making a single player version of it. Here are the basic elements I want to include:- Total freedom of movement (access all buildings, able to climb walls not taller than yourself etc.) - Realistic aim and overlay (no number telling you how many bullets is in your gun, you should know that. Hunger meter, Thirst meter and health meter) and the way you aim, no cross sight and a fatigue meter. - a huge variety of things that can be used, all lights, radios, phones, melee weapons, shovels, vehicles.. - Be able to punch and kick (if you don't have a weapon). - ALL sounds should attract near by zombies, especially gunfire. - Level up. When you get a character to a safe zone, you level up that class of character and the game starts over, you should be able to choose from like 6 different classes (military, civilian, doctor, athlete, martial arts expert, geek) or more. The goal of the game is to get to a safe spot, only problem is that when you start you don't know where it is, so you will need to like find messages written on walls, get a radio to work etc. Then you will also need to get food and water to survive. you should be able to survive like 20-30 days depending on how much you move around without food but only 3 days without water. In order to simulate you sleeping (in multi player mode you will have 2 servers per server so to speak. One where it is day, and one night, then they shift and if you don't want to play when it's night you find a safe enough spot to sleep on (like in a locked bathroom where zombies wouldn't look because you basically make no sound when you sleep). What do you think could make the game more realistic and more fun? 23 out of 27 found this valuable. Do you? |

This sounds like an amazing game, but sounds very ambitious. I know a little bit about video game making, and what you're describing is a 3D, open world, fully interact able, game with realistic physics. No game like this has ever been made, not even a group with large teams and almost infinite funding. So here are some questions.Do you actually have any game making experience? In what field? (code, animation, physics) Will you be working in a team? How big? How much funding do you have? Do you work for an actual company? I'm sorry to doubt you, but as I said, a game of this caliber has never been attempted, and if you're just someone with basic video game making skills and a computer in your room then this is never going to happen. Sorry. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

What programs are you planning to use to make it?

Well, I have some game making experience, I can program almost any program in python tough I'm planning to use DarkBasic for this game and I'm not really going that much for super cool graphics. Though I can make very good 3d models. I don't work for any company and I am alone (right now) ... this is something I've just started, didn't expect to get this much feedback right away :) But I know like how (in theory) I will make the game, question is if the computer can handle it the way I'm making it :P So yeah, it's a long shot, but if I don't try I will never know id I can succeed... So don't expect the game to be finished anytime soon... But help is always appreciated :)

"(snip)But my gun has sights... I have been an avid gamer, tabletop and computer, for longer than I like to think about. I really prefer not to see class/level based games. I find the concept to be an artificial limitation and generally a drag. I like the "find the hidden sanctuary" aspect. You might think about handling night similar to the way it was done in Morrowind. You went to sleep and only woke up if something happened or you recovered your fatigue. Depending on where you sleep or what you've been into plot-wise, you may or may not be attacked or otherwise disturbed. Do you find this valuable? |

it sounds like a version of left 4 dead in a mmo form'as left 4 dead had the players reading messages like that but you added some realism that i look forward to. (please don't make it so i don't have to install anything to make it work Do you find this valuable? |

"it sounds like a version of left 4 dead in a mmo form'Yeah, it will basically be a more realistic version of L4D, except the stupid special infecteds with their 100 feet tongues and stuff, though I have not decided if there will be special zombies. As it's looking right now you wont have to install ANYTHING. You will just have to download a zip file, unzip is and you're done. It will take a long time to make it, like probably more than a year, but I'm hoping to get a beta up and running after the summer break :) Do you find this valuable? |

"But my gun has sights...When I mean a realistic aim, I mean that you actually look down the sights, like in real life. The reason I am adding the classes/levels is so that you actually get something out of playing the game. I've gone to basic psychology classes, and the three ways to "find happiness" is 1: See meaning in what you do. 2: Have "flow" and 3 Feel pleasure. Now "flow" is like when you do something you love and the happiness comes from inside, this applies for computer games too. To feel flow most people need to feel that the activity is challenging, and that they are improving. A level based game (if it's done good) will combine the flow and meaning factors to make more people like the game. A good example of this is (and don't hate me for saying this if you don't like the game) world of warcraft. So I'm sorry, but it will be a level based game :P The night and day transitions I will try to make as natural as possible and I have high hopes for this because of the way I am making the skybox, which wont be like a normal skybox, but a background color, changing, and on that I will add moving clouds, sun and stuff like that, which will be separate images, so the sky will almost never look the same. I will also add that red line you see across the horizon as the sun goes down :) 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

" So here are some questions. If I answered these questions a bit unclear before, I will answer them question by question now, since more people agree with what you are saying. I have made games (2D) since I was like 12 I think, and played a bit with 3D games when I got older but never actually took the time to just sit down and finish a game I've gone 3 programing courses, in which I got an A on all of them. So If I had to say in which field I would have to say all. I´ve done 3D models since I was like 12,13 and concerning physics and stuff, the programing language I am using has a build in physics engine, which is a bit slow, but if the Beta works out all right I will buy a real Physics engine and make it faster and better. I have also made some L4D maps, but again never actually finished one because I get tired of the map (which won't be that much of a problem now, because the game won´t actually have a "map" I will not be working in a team, unless someone decides to join me, which I find kind of unlikely. I have like zero funding, I'm planning to make this a free game unless I have to pay money for something, like the physics engine and stuff like that. I do not work for a company, I just finished high school (though I live in Sweden so the systems arent exactly the same, but they are close enough) and I will continue to study on a university. If you guys are lucky (and I am unlucky) I wont get in where I want and will have to wait half a year, which means that I can spend almost all of those 6 months on making the game, though then it will cost because I need money if I'm not working XD I hope that answers your questions :) Do you find this valuable? |

Many lie when they come onto this site claiming to be creating a game.Of course I'm not going to doubt or believe this claim. If you are making this though, I'd love to see a rough draft picture. Do you find this valuable? |

I like the general idea, but not the "classes" part. It really restricts games.

Wouldn't it be easier to mod a game with the stuff you want already in it? Your hunger/thirst/fatigue thing sounds like Fallout NV in hardcore mode and that has a huge modding community for assists._ Do you find this valuable? |

You're not the first one to consider this idea. It's an EXTREMELY ambitious project, and it's almost impossible to properly make it (especially 3-D) without being attached to a major company like Rockstar or Crytek.

Otherwise I would probably just mod an existing game :P Do you find this valuable? |

"Many lie when they come onto this site claiming to be creating a game.Well, I can tell you that I´m not lying (I don't really see the point of that) but I'm not promising you and awesome game either. I just want feedback on my idea, to see what people think, and I really really want to make this game so pictures, and even betas will come out unless I run into some really big problems. When I sort out the infinite world problem I will release the first alpha or something, where you can just walk around in the world. Then I would appreciate some feedback on the environment. As I said, Im not promising anything, I just hope I can create this and so far it's going good. Got the basic movement fixed, the physics and I know how to create the infinite world but there is still a LOOOOONG way to go :P 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |
