Re: What handgun should I buy?

I say get a handgun identical to that of your local law enforcement agency. Try to get the EXACT model they use so it will be possible for you to use thier magazines IF YOU ARE IN A PINCH and you had to do so. I f you cannot figure that out then you have several other decent options. One is to go simply for a high capacity .40S&W such as a Glock 22. Decent stopping power and good capacity (15 rounds unless your stuck in Canada LOL) and common enough ammunition that should allow you to find more at some point, hopefully without too much difficulty. If that fails, get yourself something in 9mm with a high capacity. 9mm Parabellum/Luger is the most common handgun/smg cartridge around in most cases. That would be your best bet if all else fails. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

The only problem with that is, the most common ammunition will also be the one people are using most often. Therefore, it could be used up faster than something that nobody shoots.

"The only problem with that is, the most common ammunition will also be the one people are using most often. Therefore, it could be used up faster than something that nobody shoots."Also true. We ultimately have to hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Not to say you might get lucky on the off chance and find something you CAN use but as always, try to have plenty of ammo beforehand anyways. Whatever your local law enforcement uses should be the handgun you buy IF you can by it. Do you find this valuable? |

Getting a handgun that is identical to local law inforcement is a good idea. Mainly because as you stated ammo wont be hard to get. But as im in Canada and handgun laws are pretty tight, I dont think handguns should even be a large priority "why not have another rifle or shotgun instead?". P.S. I wouldn't look past getting a slightly older but good quality handgun, my friend got a Russian Tokarev TT33 and he says it really good 'also its cheap, and supposedly has the ability to fire armor pircing rounds lol" Do you find this valuable? |

Better to get a handgun that fits you, and that you can shoot well, then to worry about what the local LE carries. If you can't shoot a Glock 22 well, there's no use in carrying it is there? Do you find this valuable? |

However, I have to disagree that the law enforcement's sidearm is the best choice. IMO, the best choice is the gun that you shoot best and feel most comfortable with. If that's the LE gun, then that's great. If it isn't, I'd go with what I'm more proficient with. Edit: Apparently 2WS and I think alike. Do you find this valuable? |

Local law enforcement and military sidearms do vary. Military uses the 9mm beretta, but when it comes to law enforcement depending on the officer they have different firearms. Some use the beretta, most seem to use the glock for its ergonomics. The thing about sidearms is not the ammo, but how comfortable you are with a certain firearm. When I mean comfort I mean knowledge and competence of the weapon. The question is would this be your first handgun? Because sure you could read and ask on pistol threads about what is good and whats not, or even read the ratings when comparing various firearms, still gonna have to do a hands on research. It took me several visits to a local gun range and actually breaking down various pistols a few times before I even bought my Sig 220. Then after I bought my Sig I put few thousand rounds through it to feel completely competent with my firearm. When it comes to afford-ability yes you want to consider the what ammo to use, but when buying any firearm it is about how the gun is a fit to you, and not because the military use it. If I got a nickel for every time I said that to someone who didn't do their research of any kind and bought a M4(AR-15) or a beretta bc the military/police used the same equipment I'd be rich.

Like it or not, you can't be picky when its "balls against the wall". You will need handguns and me being Canadian, I think they should be high priority since you can do a tactical switch to your secondary from your primary if you run dry and got more zed's or hostiles coming at you. I know that not alot of people up here my have them and thats fine but I really believe a handgun is a necessity when it comes to WROL, SHTF and Z-POC type scenarios. 1 out of 1 found this valuable.
