Duct Tape reinforcement?
May 29 2011, 1:53 PM EDT | Post edited: May 29 2011, 1:53 PM EDT
I was thinking about how you could make 2x4's stronger and I thought why not wrap them in a couple layers of duct tape. The wood would still snap under pressure but the duct tape would keep it together adding a little more strength. So what do you think? 7  out of 7 found this valuable. Do you?

Use glass fibre packaging tape. Wrap it around tightly and then another layer lengthwise. But in all seriousness, it won't help much. What are you planning to do with the 2x4?

Heheh, I just saw this was in the Barricade Materials location... Taping it won't help much. The answer is more 2x4s. Solid core doors are good too. Most interior doors are hollow core and easy to break.

Yeah I don't know just a thought didn't really think about application. Maybe it might help if you had a limited amount of 2x4's. Like maybe you forget to head to home depot before the SHTF. ;)

filament tape is stronger. But unless your doing like a hundred rolls per board, it probably won't make that much of a difference. Try it out Do you find this valuable?

depending on which brands you buy, duct tape is pretty strong stuff, especially in layers. I think it's a good idea. I use it a lot at work.

As with most materials, it has different strengths from forces applied in different ways or directions. As soon as there's a hole in it, it has a massive weak spot and may tear easily. That's where the different layers come in handy.
If a piece of wood splinters, a few wrappings of duct tape may well keep it together and stop the slit in the wood from spreading any further.

The best way to re-enforce a 2X4 is with another 2X4.

Duct tape isn't a good option to reinforce much, for long.

Very true, but if you used up all your wood and had plenty of duct tape, it might be worth the effort.

Even duct tape has it's limits. If you are looking to reinforce let's say plywood or even sheet rock, you would be better off using kevlar sheeting or kevlar tape. Jamestown Distributers have the stuff by the mile. It is more expensive then duct tape but the stuff is really amazing. Do you find this valuable?

I have to agree that what you want is more 2x4s. Duct tape is too valuable to waste on this.

You should NEVER have a shortage of 2x4s. Every stick built and modular house in the country is built out of hundereds of 8' 2x4s. 20 to 30 2x4s put together will fill a doorway with solid wood.

If you have a saw to cut out knotches every six inches, you can put them together into and 8' by 8' grid which will make a solid (but climbable) fence section. Alternate and link and you do not even need nails.

Check where the wood was grown, slower growth means stronger wood due to the more compact tree rings. It should be stamped on the 2x4's or other peices. Rotate the crowns of the wood if building 2x4 pannels it may make walls look wavy but as a reinforcment it will aid in impact resistance since the wood will bend in the direction of it's crown.
