Natural disasters and your B.O.L.
May 30 2011, 12:28 AM EDT
As many of you may know. I live in Oklahoma, and in Oklahoma we get a ton of Tornadoes. It got me to thinking about what most of us would do if our Primary B.O.L got wiped out by a natural disaster I.E floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, fire ect. I'm thinking of buying some extra building materials and supplies for my B.O.Lfor just such an occasion. I also have my secondary B.O.L but I'd rather not have to resort to that. Do any of you have a contingency plan for such an occasion? Do you find this valuable?

I'm partially in luck. My B.O.L has 4 separate buildings. One of them is large enough for my whole family to fit more than comfortably. The other two are larger than the first. Hopefully if something ever did happen to the main house, one of the other buildings would be intact. If not we'd either have to try and rebuild, or go to my secondary B.O.L. Being in Australian bush fire is a big risk for us and from what I have learned their is nothing much you can do you stop the fire when the man fire-front come through. The only thing you can do is go down into a bunker and wait it out. Once the main fire has past then you will have to fight smaller spot fiire that flare up again. Because of this the only thing you can do to stop a fire completely destroying your BOL is to prepare before fire season. Keep your grass short, no tree near your house. No junk around the etc. I have also looked at getting fir hoses, fitting out a ute to be a purpose built fire fighting truck. However, even if you save your house you may lose your live stock and crops. This could be enough to wipe you out or you may have to move one to find a fresh unburnt area. Wildfire is my vulnerability, for two to three months a year we have fires and there is only a limited amount of things I can do about it. I spend about a months work every year with a brush cutter strimming back the undergrowth that really helps the fires along and I've taken other measures but. . . . One of the reasons I chose the mountains was because of 'vertical biodiversity' which 'should' more quickly compensate in a case of climate change. But if got much drier here in the summer then the fire season gets longer and my chances of dodging that particular bullet are diminished. I do miss the sea but in a world that I believe is changing, it is too dangerous a neighbour so I'm many mountainous miles from the coast and this is a geologically stable zone. While we have extremely violent storms they are normally very brief. And that's as much as I can manage. Edit; If I could find the f**king 'Add Photo' button I'd post a picture of my last close call. _ Do you find this valuable? |

here a really good thread on an Australian Survivalist site about surviving bushfirehttp://www.aussurvivalist.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12595&PN=1 Some information is wrong, so remember to look for a second source. On the whole it is a very good source n information. Do you find this valuable? |

One of the things I've done is donate some otherwise useless land to the fire service. They had a 3/4 million litre concrete water tank built for their helicopters to fill from. I've hooked a tube up the outfall from the tank and whenever I have some spare cash I get some more tubing because I'm (slowly) running a drip-irrigation pipe all the way around the bottom of my steep village. This will eventually take around 2 miles of tubing but will theoretically generate an belt of green ( as in, not bone dry) vegetation all the year round. And if I open the valve by the tank and max the water flow my home made drip tubing can wet out a thin strip of land. This makes more brush cutting work and maintaining the tube is progressively more effort but you have to try, eh! _ Do you find this valuable? |

Thats another option, set up a sprinkler system to protect you BOL. Get a solar panel system and a electric pump to power it. Then you can turn on the system and go into your bunker to wait out the fire and hopefully find you BOL un-damaged

"Thats another option, set up a sprinkler system to protect you BOL. Get a solar panel system and a electric pump to power it. Then you can turn on the system and go into your bunker to wait out the fire and hopefully find you BOL un-damaged"I've an abundance of 'steep' so gravity works, even when the sky is black with smoke. I also once was involved with fighting wildfires in peat country which may be of interest to Canadians here. In a drought the peat will dry and then the ground will burn. This is spectacularly dangerous to be running around on, almost impossible to combat and once the fire burns it's way underground it can smoulder for years. The North Yorkshire moors in Britain burned like that in '76. It was a severe drought and there was simply no water to fight the fires and we beaters were pulled back after a few people fell through the surface because it was burning beneath you. You fall into a smouldering pit which immediately flares because you've made a hole for air to get in. No one was killed but it was an extremely sporty way to earn six quid a day. And in the long term, the vegetation had not recovered in more than half of the affected areas by 1986! _ Do you find this valuable? |

"As many of you may know. I live in Oklahoma, and in Oklahoma we get a ton of Tornadoes. In the first instance, move out of the tornado zone. If that is not possible, construct buildings that can withstand as much as possible. Brick and concrete rather than wood. Good foundations, basement shelter, etc. Also, think about the devestation to the crops you would have post-Z. Stockpile food, keep extra seeds, etc. Do you find this valuable? |

i live in meditterean, so the likehood of natural disasters is LOWmy BOL is made out of stone so i guess it could survive quite a bit of punishment. Hail is what i fear the most. Destroys the plants... Do you find this valuable? |

"In the first instance, move out of the tornado zone.Well most of OK and KS are considered Tornado Alley. I can't remember the last time this county actually had one though. Moving out isn't really an option. I don't really have the money for constructing much of anything right now. I do plan on buying seeds in bulk though. Do you find this valuable? |

Wildfire like Greece has had in the last few years, earthquakes like Lorca two weeks ago? Then there's Etna because the Med is the boundary between the African and Eurasian plates or the taxifolia algae that is invading the sea as we speak with potentially disastrous consequences. The best thing the region has going for it is there are is a very high proportion of the people with pretty low tech lifestyles and they will just shrug and carry on when the power dies. _ Do you find this valuable? |

Well my BOL is build like a brick sh!thouse. Its was made to withstand natural disasters.Hurricane-Check Tornado-Check Earthquake-Check unless the ground opens up underneath it. Flooding-This is why I have a boat... I have a backup BOL and a backup BOL for my backup BOL. Being prepared in advance is what will separate the winners from the losers. *Cracks open a beer* < I deserve it :D EDIT... Wildfires as Pedro mentioned have become a reality here in Southeast Texas. We have been in a drought for a hot minute and even had a few arson related fires. No casualties yet but we pray for rain nonetheless. Unless the flame cooked us alive inside or we suffocated from smoke inhalation I think we could survive it. It would be easier to just take the tractors and till around it and make a barrier. As long as I make it wide enough the fire should not be able to jump it. No trees are nearby to fall either. Do you find this valuable? |

Don't pan on surviving a fire just by staying indoors, if you have the money you should get a specially made fire bunker, a cheaper option would be getting a shipping container and having it put into the ground. Nice and deep. There would be tons of stuff on the internet about it. Do you find this valuable? |
