Worst gun for Z-Day
Jun 6 2011, 1:18 PM EDT | Post edited: Jun 6 2011, 1:18 PM EDT
WIth all the talk of weapons and ammo going around the site, i was wondering.

What is the worst gun for z-day. I will put down some qualifiers.
1. Must be man portable. in other words, one person can effectively move and operate without any help.
2. Must be actual firearm, i will not include BB guns, paintball guns, potato guns, etc
4. Must fire bullets or shotgun shells, no explosives or rockets
5. Must be available to people.
6. must be relatively modern, no muzzleloaders.

Just wondering.

Something that breaks easily/jams a lot. Nothing could be worse than a zombie seeing you (No, problem! I've got a freaking gun!), then your gun jamming (It was working ten minutes ago . . .) and then running (Screw it!), falling on your gun (Whoops) to hear a splintering sound (Was that my ribs?) and standing up to see your rifle is snapped in half (Maybe I can stab 'em with it?). 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Excluding all options that are too silly for there to be any chance someone would use them,
the worst options would be guns highly tuned to meet a very narrow purpose using design elements that reduce their reliability for uses outside of that specific purpose.

Example: 1911's tuned to be perfect for bullseye competition. The tight tolerances required in such a tuning will really work against you if you have to shoot less-than-perfect ammo or shoot the gun more quickly than it's design is intended to allow.

True, you don't want a target pistol for field work. you aren't going ot get the reliability that you need once the shtf.

Any microgun (i.e. the 2mm pistols and such.)

Failing that, any rifle in a Lazzeroni caliber. If you don't reload, good luck finding ammo.

Okay, how about standard caliber guns? Let's try and exclude specialty calibers and just focus in on the mainstream sizes.

Well, see, then it becomes very difficult to judge which cartridges are "mainstream." Is that only things like the .30-06, .308, etc., or does it include things like the .338 Win. Mag, .375, etc?

There you go, i like it. Bringing the old guns out of storage.
From what i have heard, it was tested by SOG in vietnam and found to be rather useless, though rather powerful.

(1) Any gun that you have to order ammo for because stores don't carry it!
(2) Most full-automatic weapons, just a waste of ammo.
(3) Any weapon you don't have extra magazines for.
(4) Any weapon you can't reload in less than five seconds.
(5) Any weapon you can't share the ammo/magazines with your buddies. (applies to CQB/MOUT, not so much for snipers)
(6) Anything LORCIN makes!

Well I might have to disagree with you on the muzzleloader part, well modern muzzleloaders at least. I have a Thompson/Center .50 caliber muzzleloader that I can reload in about 10-20 seconds. While it may get you killed going up against a couple of zombies, it can be perfect for hunting in the right hands.

Now back on topic. I think the worst gun could possibly be any example of the first guns made. Specifically matchlocks, wheellocks, possibly even flintlocks and percussion cap guns. They all take a considerable amount of time to reload and really aren't that accurate because they lack rifling/
