Wisconsin has waited 140 years...
Jun 22 2011, 12:21 AM EDT
Last week the state senate passed a bill legalizing concealed carry. Today, the assembly signed the bill. The governor has promised to sign concealed carry into law when it hits his desk, thus breaking the 140 year ban on concealed firearms. The great state of Wisconsin will leave the jabroni state of Illinois as the last state in the union that bans concealed carry. Wisconsin has always had open carry, but it has not been a popular way to carry a gun in public, as freaked out citizens have been known to call the police as soon as they see a guy with a gun on his hip shopping for socks. Our new governor has had to make some unpopular and difficult decisions in his first year. However, by signing SB93, Walker will be remembered as the man who gave us our freedoms back. Not turning this political, so I digress. The bill requires a state-issued permit and proof of firearms training. The bill will also abolish Wisconsin's ridiculous Safe Transport Law, making it legal to carry a loaded firearm in an automobile. I just wanted to share the good news with the ZSDW. Now not only does Wisconsin have beautiful wilderness, un-congested highways, the Championship Green Bay Packers, dairy farms, the Dells, and...ummm...The Green Bay Packers, but also the right to arm ourselves in a responsible manner. The bill: https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/2011/related/proposals/sb93 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Hope its not like California. Here you can get a CCW permit but you have to provide "good cause" which is basically security guard or similar. You can't get one just because you want to.

Oh Carny...ever the pessimist. This same bill nearly passed four years ago. The senate and assembly passed it, but the last asshat governor vetoed it. To reverse it in three years would mean everyone in the senate and assembly having a major change of heart or get completely voted out of office. And once it is realized that we won't have terror in the streets, I suspect many will forget we even have concealed carry.Stryker - Fortunately there is no silly provision in SB93 mandating "good cause" or the like. Sharpie - Canada is on the right track it sounds. Good luck! Do you find this valuable? |

That's 49 out of 50 states now with CCW laws, of which I believe around 40 are right to carry states. We're only missing Illinois. But to be honest I don't hold out much hope for those guys. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Can you expand on exactly what is considered adequate firearms training? Is that a multi-day course at a range, or just a tickbox form at the store?

I live in Maryland and while maybe technically is possiable to get a Concealed Carry permit in the real world you are not going to get one, just not got to happen anymore. Was easier in the past, I have 2 friends that got them because they carried large sums of money and delt in things that couldn't be replaced. Both have been told if they let the permit expire they would most likely not be able to get another one. Today about the only way you can get one is if you have been a victim of a crime and have reason to believe you might be again For example a store owner is mugged taking bank reciepts to the bank might have a chance to get a CCW permit after he is attacked.....sort of locking the barn door after the horse is out. A committee has to aprove all aplications and don't have to give a reason when they turn them down. Several Gun Rights guys have been trying to get a permit and writting about vit but of course no luck I really don't see the law changing to make it easier here, the only hope would be a national law but not holding my breath. Even if legal I don't think I would carry a pistol on me that often and if illegal if I felt the need for one I would still carry it Do you find this valuable? |

"I know folks in southern Illinois. Its really un-fair that the entire state is punished because of Chicago."My kids and the rest of my family live in Ill. Thier legislation for concealed carry was sent back for review. It was not defeated as the new services claimed. My son tells me thier seem to be a lot of defections from the anti gun dems in the house and senate in favore of the concealed carry law in Ill. @ Toxic We'll be celebrating tonight, its about time fellow statesman. @Carnack.. A whole country DID NOT vote in a president three years ago, He simply had the majority of the votes and electorial votes. he had around 55 million votes,,, only slighty more than 1/6th the population of the 300 million in the US. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. "Can you expand on exactly what is considered adequate firearms training? Is that a multi-day course at a range, or just a tickbox form at the store?"I can't speak for Wisconsin, I haven't actually read their law. But in Virginia a few things count towards firearms training such as prior military/law enforcement service, almost any NRA certified firearms safety class, and IIRC a hunter safety class... Though I'm not sure on that last one, I'm not going back to review the law. I think there are a couple others too. Most of the NRA certified classes that are geared towards people who want to qualify for their CCW are only 1 day and include a written test and a range session where you must qualify with your weapon, though it's not like the test or the range qualification requirements are hard. "I know folks in southern Illinois. Its really un-fair that the entire state is punished because of Chicago."I think it's only a matter of time, even if it is a LOOONG time. The trend in many states is towards less restrictive gun laws. As a related topic, Pennsylvania is expanding their castle doctrine. If I read the article right they will now have the right to defend themselves anywhere they have a legal right to be (Not just inside their homes). And they've removed the requirement that you try to retreat before defending yourself. And I've heard something about North Carolina working on a pro-gun bill including Castle Doctrine... "Hope its not like California. Here you can get a CCW permit but you have to provide "good cause" which is basically security guard or similar. You can't get one just because you want to. "Same in NJ. Even security personnel being able to CC is a stretch. I think there are laws for armored cab drivers and LEOs, and not much else. Same with our 'assault weapons permit', which would make our entire Clinton-esque ban defunct for the holder. I've heard that a few organizations are pushing to make CCW permits more fair here, and that they have been making progress. I don't know how that's going to go over, since Christie is too busy making sure the rich get richer to care about anything they do. Do you find this valuable? |

I just wonder they won't allow CCW's in some places, it's strange to me. Peoples lives and peace of mind is at stake, but I guess the congressmen and women don't care. But I'm lucky, in Vermont, you don't need a licence to carry a CCW, no waiting period on normal guns (rifles, shotguns, pistols), and there is no problems with getting guns here. While I agree with CCW, it's kind of dumb how zealous pro-gun people can get. Understand that your opponent has a different view, and try to convince him, without flinging garbage, why your point is correct. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

It's kinda like they see that yeah the carrier is all happy but others would feel less safe knowing that Random Joe is ready to dive in as soon as crap goes off because he has a weapon. I can't really disagree with that as pulling a weapon has a chance make things worse than before. Do you find this valuable? |
