Steriotypical teen without much exp.
Jun 22 2011, 11:55 PM EDT
So, I'm 19 and I lack much of the skills needed to survive a situation. What could I do to train myself so I would be more useful in a outbreak?

"So, I'm 19 and I lack much of the skills needed to survive a situation. What could I do to train myself so I would be more useful in a outbreak?"I had my 19th birthday in Kosovo. I was serving as a U.N. peacekeeper at the time. Fun times...I kind miss it. No one is born with experiance...of any kind. You have to go out of your way to learn and to retain the knowledge that you have learned. If you wish to be a survivalist...then start reading...but that will only get you so far. You have to get out there and put this information to the test. You can't just know something. You have to get out there and do it. Thats what experiance is all about. Join the military...join a gun club...hang out with other survivalists and hunters...read everything pertaining to survival in any and all situations. Absorb everything that you can...and then put it into practice...often. Do you find this valuable? |

Go camping a lot using only basic equipment, keep surfing the site, find other survivalists near you.

In three years' time I went from your position to a married veteran who was responsible and trained enough to keep his wife and himself safe in almost any situation. I've got one word for you: enlist.

"So, I'm 19 and I lack much of the skills needed to survive a situation. What could I do to train myself so I would be more useful in a outbreak?"Pick up a copy of Emergency by Neil Strauss. He went through a similar situation to yours, and decided that enlisting in the military would be too far in the right direction. There is a wide middle ground where you can get survival experience without risking being shot at daily. Do you find this valuable? |

"What's wrong with West Point?"I'm going to go with that it teaches you to be an officer. Not really fight. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

BTW, which country are you from? We're all making suggestions, but we don't have a clue about your federal laws and stuff. Not the biggest issue though.Personally, if you want some experience but don't want to get shot at, I say join the reserves. Not sure about where you live, but the reserves here offers bonus courses and whatnot on survival. Do you find this valuable? |

Not the biggest issue though.I agree that enlistment is the strongest choice (maybe cuz I did it and it works :-P) Otherwise, You could even go to college for something like botany, and take ROTC courses for some basics. There are also usually private and public survival courses available. Do you find this valuable? |
