Fort'in up old school

I don't see much difference in medieval siege warfare and digging in for zombies.the issues are much the same except that zombie don't have the ability to build siege engines. so you can build with only the plan to defend against human zombie strength. having to not worry about catapults or battering rams makes things much simpler. the biggest issues are the same as for any fort from the dawn of time. fresh water. food storage. sanitation. man power to defend the walls. since zombies cannot build and climb ladders or use grappling hooks then you need a lot less manpower to watch the walls. in reality a well built fort could hold out until the zombies were standing on their brethren to clear the walls.. quite a while if anyone is around to start a fire to burn the bodies or can use a grappling hook to clear the dead. anyone have floor plans for a simple walled fort/keep/castle? Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it 12 out of 12 found this valuable. Do you?

Building a fort is fine. But you've mentioned schools in the title, don't bother trying to fortify those. Do you find this valuable? |

"I don't see much difference in medieval siege warfare and digging in for zombies.Plus, if it's your typical zombie, then it won't be able to think, ration, scheme or plot against you like a medieval army would. An army of people can figure out ways to get in if possible, and can out smart you. Typical zombies are just, well, retarded. As for plans for a walled fort, i think it would have to be determined by the terrain and surrounding buildings, if any. I think it would be much better to use and fortify an existing building though, unless the community has gone a long way in building itself back up and there is a construction industry again. People would need work after all. Do you find this valuable? |

Building a fort using a school? Not so good of an idea. You'll actually need more manpower to fortify. And you're just telling raiders to come steal from you. Do you find this valuable? |

This reminds me of the most recent Resident Evil movie - where the prison is in the middle of a sea of zed.The simple truth is that you can build a wall that zed cannot push through, since after a set distance, the force from more in the back either trains down into the ground, or, best case, the zed near the wall are squished like Brazillians at a Soccer game. Climbing on top of each other or over the growning pile of squish at the bottom of the wall, will eventually get over any wall. Of course, when you start to think about what it takes to build such a wall and the space necessary to support each of those people, you realize that a great wall around your place is not a great idea. You're walls will probably hold against all but the most massive hordes. your doors however, will not.Realistically speaking, I came to the conclusion that a "Hatch" style door, such as one on a submarine could be theoretically impossible to have any number zed break or open. it's simple. if you have a vertical door, (one parallel with the ground) then you need to use downward force to break it. so basically, you need to smash the ground. which, does not work. they can't figure out how to open it, and they can't physically break it either. Raiders, might miss a small enough or well hidden enough hatch, so a theoretical housing solution I'm thinking of is to bury a storage container or 2 from a ship together, with maybe a foot or two peeking over the top of the hole, and drop some dirt over it. then maybe weld a hatch out of the top, and start putting in furniture and such. of course, this kind of makes the whole point obsolete, so... :/ Do you find this valuable? |

Why not build a bunker? Cheap to build, can be lived in before Z-Day, and stays a constant temperature all year round. Harder for zombies to get into, and raiders might not ever find it.

Using an old school? I'd considered that, my old school building is about 15 minutes from where I live. It was old an is now being knocked down, replaced by housing. The new school is bigger, better, but far more open. Small fences you could hope over at some parts. Other bits, like the main gate are tall and strong, but other methods of entry concern me. Basically, I think schools aren't a good idea for holing up in, if the a zedpc.

One of the biggest dangers in siege warfare historically is disease. Walking corpses don't care about typhoid and cholera but the humans trapped inside sure will.

you've all forgotten something... the zombies will last 3-5 years and will nevergo away until they're all removed. now, sure you can kill about 1000 no problem, but what are you gonna do when all that noise attracts 1,000,000 more? you'll be screwed, the weight of 1,000,000 will break down any wall. a fire will destroy your base before it will destroy a horde. always be prepared to RUN! flight will be essential if there are too many. "you've all forgotten something... the zombies will last 3-5 years and will neverHow can you say with certainty any facts about something that doesn't exist? Namely, how long they will last or how they will act? Also, I'd have to argue that it isn't "no problem" to kill a thousand zombies. Edit: In addition, you say everyone's forgotten it, but Oak already covered this idea. Do you find this valuable? |

"you've all forgotten something... the zombies will last 3-5 years and will neverBased on what? The Max Brooks Zombie Survival Guide? I'd say that's where you got your information, seeing as your username is Max Brooks (Don't think for a second anyone here will be fooled into thinking that you're actually Max Brooks - who happens to be a comedian, by the way). Just so you know, zombies aren't real, so no facts about them exist. Nor will they, until zombies themselves do. Do you find this valuable? |

Guys, not trying to be rude, but i'm almost certain that by "old school" he meant old fashioned, etc, not an actual place of education.Old fashioned as in castles. Like his OP. Do you find this valuable? |
