My BOL (I am still a spoiled bastard.)
Jul 3 2011, 10:00 PM EDT | Post edited: Jul 3 2011, 10:00 PM EDT
Hey everybody. I know I've never shared a lot of details of my plan. While I DO have one, I've never really put it down into words.
Take my BOL for example. My general plan before has been to stay at my house. It's where I'm comfortable, and where all of my supplies are. However, I recently had a better idea, and I'd like to know what y'all think.

My great-aunt has a farm a half-mile down the road from us. The driveway's around half a mile long and goes through several patches of woods, and you wouldn't really know it was back there unless you were looking for it. In total, it's around 200 acres, ringed with barbed wire around the perimeter and a farmhouse in the middle. My great-aunt (and her husband, before he died of cancer :( grow corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, soybeans, onion, etc, and have a pretty good herd of cattle (60 IIRC). There are several buildings around the farmhouse, with equipment, supplies, etc. Several creeks runs all through it, so water won't be difficult to find. Also, there are woods all throughout it, with lots of deer, squirrels, etc. It's the place where we do most of our hunting at, so I know it better than anywhere else.

My GA actually has several windmills set up to provide a little bit of power, so that should be useful. Also, there's a small gas pump for the farm vehicles. No idea how big it is, but might be helpful in a pinch. Finally, there's a large wood fireplace in the center of the house, so we should be able to have heat in the winter.

Oh, also, the land immediately around the house is clear, so we can see any threats coming. And, I feel I should mention that she likes guns :) I've seen her ride on a tractor with a Remington 870 in the cab.

Cont'd on next post.

I'm considering investing in a few cheap solar lights to take over for marking purposes. Also, because it's so close, it would be really easy to transfer all of our gear and supplies.

Any other ideas and/or problems y'all can see?

I am envious.

Please don't take this the wrong way, I mean no offence, but is your GA elderly?
If so, will the property still be in your family in a few years?

I ask only from experience.
My previous BOL belonged to my Father however he recently passed away and it was in his Will to sell the property and divide the earning between family and charities.

Like I said, I mean no offence and I'm sure your great aunt will be kicking for years to come.

No offense taken; it's a valid question.

And yeah, she's 74, so she's up there a ways LOL. I honestly don't know what she's planning on doing with the property; her only son died before I was born. She'd mentioned something about possibly giving it to our huntin' club, but I have no idea.

Sounds good except for the trees, generally I would want a higher place with little brush to mount a good defensive.

Sounds like a nice place. The fact thats its a crop and cattle farm alone makes it sound great.
The only things I have to add are: would it be plausible to consider a more sturdy permiter than barbed wire; and have you considered hand-crank lighting?
I don't know much about solar-panelled lighting, but i have the impression thatif it's an overcast day, they won't do that great at night.
Hand-crank lanterns can be picked up really cheap, i have a couple, on top of battery lights and candles.

Of all the nice stuff you mention that is what I like the best in your plan. If things get sporty you will have a priceless resource in the local knowledge.

This seems to get overlooked in a lot of 'I'm gonna go to this place and...' type plans.

Well thanks Frank, I appreciate that.
And thanks to everyone for the support and advice.

@DevilDog, I see what you are saying. But, as I said, the area around the farmhouse (I'd say...300 yards in every direction) is clear, so most threats can be seen from a good distance away.)

@Mark: Something sturdier than barbed wire would be a good idea; that's just what happens to be there now. I was thinking of maybe using existing hay bales to fortify key areas.
Also, I do have several crank lights already, which I would take over there when the SHTF.

Double-post.

I thought I should mention that we have around a dozen tree stands scattered around the area that we could use for keeping watch.

Just wish to point out, every human will be drawn to the smoke of your chimney (im guessing you are going to have one, as this seems to be an old property.) Do you find this valuable?

Possibly, but:
1.It's a very sparsely populated area.
2. As I said, it's pretty far back.
3.We could only burn at night.

And you could learn to keep your chimney clean, make hot dry fires and try to minimise starting fires in the conditions that 'show' the smoke (still, damp air).

Spoiled bastard!
Jk. Anyway, this seems like one of those perfect BOLs people just realize they have.
Though does this place have any high ground to spot targets?

High ground? Well, let's see: We've got the house and the tree stands. Also, there are some good-sized hills on the property, so we could work with those.
