Non combative tactics.

This is an idea you can use almost anywhere & providing that Zeds are attracted to noise like the films & books suggest it should work a treat. Almost all modern mobile phones have a loudspeaker & a calendar/alarm/countdown function and almost everyone has a mobile or knows where to find one.

Now you want to bug out but the end of the street you need to leave is blocked. You set the alarm on the phone with the loudest tune perhaps something with a wild guitar solo on the highest volume & why not the vibrate too... Gently pack the phone to survive some impact but not so much so you muffle the alarm. You throw, slide or do whatever you have to to get it away from you... The alarm goes off at the specified time making a noise, it won't be a fog horn but still it will attract some attention making the Zeds move to the desired location leaving your escape route safer if not clear.

It could also be triggered remotely, if you are entering hostile territory you set the phone & drop it. Ring it with another assuming connection will work, best test that before attempting this plan. Failing that countdown timer on maybe 30 seconds. Run like hell & the noise should again attract the Zeds to that location.

Being a one time thing you need to be sure it's the right time to use it. Battery can last a few days providing it doesn't get wet or destroyed. Setting it on a repeat alarm several times a day could well keep Zeds in the area you leave for hours/days.. One less zed following you is a good thing.

Also phone boxes, attract them to a phone box away from you by ringing it, car alarms... so many diversions.

Not a bad idea, especially if you plan on operating in an area regularly. You can set up several of these "distraction stations" in case you need to make a quick escape, or just if the wandering zeds get too close for comfort. Do you find this valuable?

What about battery powered alarm clocks? or even better the mechanical wind-up types with the two little bells (like in classic cartoons). Those you can set to whenever is convenient and some are horribly loud. The one that gets me inspired enough to crawl out of bed is loud enough to hear outside and a single 9 Volt battery lasts about 3 months with daily use. Do you find this valuable?

Walkie talkie would work but its probably going to be of more use to you than a mobile phone when the crap hits... Mobile service is bad enough as it is so I doubt the providers will bother much with service. But in a pinch you could drop the radio & make some noise. Alarm clocks would be good, if the power grid held for a while you could run it off that first then the batteries would kick in for a few weeks. Hook it up to a speaker & aim it out the top floor window.

Like the bloody scarecrow with bells on

Simple for me. I'm a huge LEGO fan, so I do get Lego Mindstorms often. Now these can be programmed to do plenty of things, from shaking the bottle to feed your fish, to solving a rubix cube.
Now, I also have plenty of those Hokatsu sound grenades, which according to John, is the equivalent of a 9mm going off. So, just program the Mindstorm to the pull the pin and release. Then set it up away from your place.

Sounds amazing, thinking back to the car alarm I said earlier, few of the cars in my street have them because quite frankly the cars are just not worth it.

Providing you can have some kind of noise distraction you can set off away from yourself you should be ok. I say sound because most things can hear or feel vibrations. I'm not biology expert but I don't know of many deaf animals. The eyes are very delicate & without fluid & re hydrating they'll get damaged quickly making them a lot less effective..

However if the Zeds go by smell, there can be a solution there too... Dead animal or rotting meat hurled down the street...
