"There is a martial arts I'm working on where you use dumblells. That could break a jaw or bone"Unwieldy, slow and tiring. I don't see it. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Martial arts are a very last resort. Especially if the attacker is infected! Krav Maga is what I would and do train with. You just want to end that type of encounter as fast as possible!

I wouldn't be interested in fighting a human who isn't infected with my bare hands much less a zombie that could bite my hands and arms. Why take the extra risk when there are so many ways to extend your reach?

"There is a martial arts I'm working on where you use dumblells. That could break a jaw or bone"There is so much fail in these two sentances that I don't even know where to start. How old are you kid? You sound like every teenager I have ever met. Take a few "martial arts" lessons at the YMCA and everyone thinks they are a ninja or Samurai. You admitted in another thread that you are learning a DEMO martial art. So you should be totally fine as long as you are only attacked by invisible assailants. Using a bumbell as a melee weapon sounds like pretty stupid idea to me. Used for one or two improvised attacks...maybe...if you absolutely had to...but to use something that heavy and unwieldy as a primary weapon is just dumb. Weapons should be used as weapons, tools should be used as tools...and dumbells should be used for working out. Even if you were going to take a swing at a walking corpse with a bumbell in hand...why the hell would you waste your effort trying to break the jaw? If your going to swing a heavy weight you may as well aim for the head and do your best to kill the damn thing. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Out of interest, whats the name of the style, and can you link me to a website if there is one. And it seems quite stupid to use a dumbbell...

Naw, no need to lock it - it's worth getting people's input because it's an outside-of-the-box topic. Now, I can see the use of increasing your open-hand punching power by punching with a dumbbell during training - it's much like using sand-weights during training to increase the resistance to help further stimulate muscle growth. The biggest concern would be to avoid straining your elbows and shoulders, but there's no doubt that grabbing a very light dumbbell and practicing your reverse punch with it will improve punching power. However, one must not neglect that most of the power in a punch comes from speed. Muscle mass isn't necessarily going to improve your speed, so solid technique is more important than weighted punching. Hitting a zombie upside the head with a dumbbell seems counterproductive because it's just not the most effective weapon for the job. Will it work? Sure, no doubt. Beats your bare hands, that's certain. There are just so many better tools to use as a weapon! There is a martial arts training tool (can't remember the Japanese name) that resembles a kettlebell or oversized padlock that is used to build your arms, shoulders, chest and grip strength. It's used similarly to a kettlebell and you can punch while holding it, but it's very awkward... Do you find this valuable? |

"Weapons should be used as weapons, tools should be used as tools...and dumbells should be used for working out."All weapons are tools first. There are very few weapons that are strictly weapons in the world and most of them go boom. OP: As to using dumbells impact items come much smaller and lighter nowadays. Not to say it wouldn't do in a pinch but there are simply more effictient ways to do it. Now smaller ones can be used as impact devices but again there are better ways to do it. "Also it's a last resort. Like fists"Then don't plan a martial art around it...or carry them around. It's not really worth the extra weight for a weapon you'll rarely use. Do you find this valuable? |

"Then don't plan a martial art around it...or carry them around.^This. Seriously are you going to carry around dumbells? Why not take a martial arts course in Krav Maga, CQC or knife fighting? You are more likely going to be able to carry a gun and or knife on you. Do you find this valuable? |

Hmmmm. I did Taekwondo and my next belt would have been black if work and family hadn't shut the door on my training days. I don't recall any mention of dumbbells. Two on one sparring, yes. Complicated destruction techniques, yes. Elaborate and beautiful patterns, yes. Dumbbells, no. Also in reference to the OP's other posts where he mentions he is training for a black belt and his master is getting him a sword - I don't recall General Choi mentioning swords in his art of hand and foot fighting. So unless you are doing two different martial arts or can demonstrate otherwise, I think i'll have to call ******** on this one. Do you find this valuable? |

It might come in handy learning how to shake folks off your rifle barrel in a zombie situation. I'm not being a hater I just thought that one would have been in your list. Do you find this valuable? |
