Elementary School?
Jul 17 2011, 11:14 PM EDT
I get exactly where you are coming from. But, what about an elementary school. Around where I live there are several elementary schools that are basically just one short hallway and three exists, not counting windows. I believe, with enough planning, a small building like this would be more easily defensible than a larger high school/college.

Perhaps, I don't know what your school looks like. Some inner city poor area schools look startlingly like small prison complexes complete with barred windows, high fences, steel doors and other features for keeping either kids in or lightly armed militias out (I am unclear on which).

Well, the school I'm thinking of is in a a very rural area. There are windows pretty much everywhere, but that wouldn't be too bad after the immediate area is cleared. It all depends on exactly how many people you could get to the school and what weapons you have, in this situation. At least, that's how I see it.

Having a lot of windows would be a serious security issue, even if you could find a way to board them up if not all just a single wing or whatever would be better. If the school is large and stands out it will be an obvious place for scavengers and others seeking a place to stay. If the school is a complex of buildings look for a single small building that is as far as possible from the road so you have less area to secure. Sound discipline inside of a school or other building with tile floors and hallways will be a must because voices and other noise will carry much further than you will want. If your group is large and well supplied a school may not be a good place to hold out if it can be avoided.

The question is: is this really a better location than just boarding up your home?

I wouldn't imagine. Unless your home is a poor design or for whatever reason this particular school is a really good one.

Your home probably has far more food in it than any tiny, rural school would have.
