A Different Kind of BOB
Jul 19 2011, 10:19 PM EDT | Post edited: Jul 19 2011, 10:19 PM EDT
I, like most members I know, have assembled a task-specific BOB. Mine is designed to get me and my wife the 40 or so miles from our residence to BOL 1. That's all good and well, but what about those occasions (like family vacations) when you know you'd be too far away in a SHTF to get to your bug out location? How would your BOB packing list change if you were taking a trip to the other side of the country? Do you find this valuable?

Other side of the country eh? More ammo, an jerry can or two of gasoline, and 3 or more days of extra food and water (on top of the usual 3 days supplies), throw most of that in the trunk, the rest in the back seat or glove box, and I could probably make it back, might just stop and meet with Sharpie near Calgary should SHTF while I was out in that direction.

Hahaha I love how you mention me when I haven't been a part of this thread

More ammo, I always have 2 smaller jerry cans of gas in my aluminium tool box, with 3L of oil, basic tools, shovel, Stanley FUBAR, bow saw, jumper cables, can't name the rest. I usually have some sort of food in the backseat, as well as usual crap I just throw in the back (I don't usually have room for other people)

First of all, does your wife have a BOB of her own? I presume she does, but if not, she should. As should every other member of your family who is old enough to lift one, with the adults dividing the load of whatever is needed for those who are younger.

Secondly, I'm not sure I would go on any trip or vacation that was wildly out of traveling distance to my BOL. The thing is, most of us want to go halfway across the country, or halfway around the world even, to experience something new, when there are new experiences right in our own backyard. For example, I am constantly amazed by the number of attractions, destinations, festivals and so forth right here in my own province, places that I'd never even heard of until I picked up a copy of the annual provincial tourism guide from the department of tourism, all within six to eight hours drive. Check with that department in your state or province, I bet they publish something similar.

Third, if circumstances forced me further afield, I'd think that the rule of thumb would just be more of whatever you'd already be taking (food, ammo, etc) coupled with vehicular supplies (oil, fuel, jumper cables, shovel, tools, etc) and gear specific to the type of terrain that you'd have to traverse to get back home. For example, I live on an island, so while my home and BOL are both on land of course, I'd have to cross a hundred miles of ocean to get back there. Given that, Survival-At-Sea gear, which I'd normally have little need for, would be crucial.
