Concealed Carry
Jul 28 2011, 2:59 PM EDT
Okay, so here in SC, concealed carry is easier than open carry, and I'm thinking about it a little.I just read the review of the Bersa Thunder .380 and heard it's good. Also, the Colt New Agent is like a smaller 1911, so that would be a good choice. Any other thoughts? Do you find this valuable? |

There's actually a lot of different opinions on concealed carry, and just as many different state laws as there are opinions. I'm not even gonna get started on that. However, lots of guns can be used for CCW work. In fact, handgun options really depend on the person's size and build, the style of carry that they prefer (IWB, OWB w/ jacket or long shirt, ankle, vest, etc.), the style of clothing that they are wearing and of course, their budget. I'm fairly large, and can get away with carrying full-sized handguns easily. I admit, I prefer medium-sized single stack guns though. I'm CCW'ing my girlfriend's Mauser M2 in .40 S&W in an inexpensive Uncle Mike's IWB (thanks to Ironhand for sending the gun to her!) for the time being because my guns are still in Saint Louis. However, I carried a Makarov PM in a Falco IWB most of the time, and for deep-concealment I carried a Beretta 950B in .25 ACP. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I've carried a govt 1911 in an IWB. It took a while to get used to. And I'd say it's definitely not the most comfortable way to do things. My point is though, don't automatically think pocket .380 when you think concealed or open carry. If you conceal carry, it's your responsibility to use a gun that maximizes on damage against someone who threatens your life will less risk of collateral damage - that is spraying bullets blindly and overpenetration. Lightweight guns will make you pay in less effective rounds and recoil. That's unavoidable. So I'd recommend you shoot a bunch of guns on the range to see what you like before you even think of carry. Do you find this valuable? |

"Well, you have a point. Perhaps the Colt New Agent (small 1911)."as a fellow south carolinian, who does have a CWP, I carry a full frame S&W M&P40. John234 is correct, dont automatically go for the pocket pistols. ruger and taurus and S&W have some very good pocket pistols, but they arent the best. if a full frame auto isnt your thing, think about a compact version. IWB is very comfortable, if you dont wear tight pants. you dont have to wear baggy pants, just not the bum huggers. also wearing button-up shirts is easier to conceal the weapon that a t-shirt. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. There are a ton of options available to the CCWer now a days, in my humble opinion the Kahr is about the best CCW weapon. They come in .380, 9mm, .40, and .45ACP. They are compact and slim. I have found the ones I have shot accurate and reliable.Another good option is a compact Glock they are easy to stow and reliable( I do not like the subcompact my self because I have large hands and cannot hold them well) If you are on a budget and you need something right away the Makarov is the way to go reasonably priced, a sufficient round and they make good holsters for them. I have CCWed for over ten years if you need advice I will try my best to give you some. Do you find this valuable? |

@ VJK -- I read the following somewhere, and think it's a sound method:Fire several handguns in increasingly powerful calibers. Your goal is to put two rounds in center of mass of a man-sized target at your farthest realistic defensive engagement distance in 3 seconds. (For me that's about 10 yards. Any farther and I'd run.) Test to fail, and the most powerful caliber that you can still control well enough to accomplish the two timed hits is your round. I'm pretty small, and for me it is a .357, so for you it would likely be something more powerful than a .380. Then find a reliable platform for that round that meets your other preferences regarding concealability, manual safety, action, etc. Do you find this valuable? |

My point is though, don't automatically think pocket .380 when you think concealed or open carry.Ditto. For what it's worth, I recommend that you start carrying with a smaller handgun. A lot of people start out with a full size gun like a 1911 or something like that. Most people won't have much trouble concealing something like a Kel-Tec P11 or a Glock 26 for IWB carry (or other places for that matter) and both of those guns aren't that hard to hit with if you practice a bit. I recommend that you check out some compact and sub-compact lines of popular handguns like the Glock 26-27, M&Pc and the like. If you want to go a size up you can always check out the compact lines of pistols (Which really aren't all that compact) like a Glock 19-23 or some of the shorter barreled M&P pistols. There are smaller options than what I listed, I just wanted to give you an idea of some handguns I thought would be easier to conceal still shoot well. Do you find this valuable? |

I love my SIG P250 but I would not recomend it for someones first weapon, it is unique and difficult to use well. The DAO trigger is different from most other triggers on the market, useing it correctly takes time and effort(I know it is the same of any other weapon, but this is a whole different beast).

"Thanks. sounds good."While I'd hate to contradict a recommendation, unless you've fired a handgun much before, that expectation is a bit of a pipe dream and might confuse you when you're looking for a good choice. Don't get hung up on a "X number of shots in Y time" or "X group size at Y range." Find what is *comfortable* and work from there - it's easier to get to a performance level when everything else is worked out. That said, you might find this article I wrote interesting: http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/page/What+handgun+should+I+buy%3F Do you find this valuable? |
