1. RE: Maverick 88

"I am thinking of buying a Maverick 88 for home defense and my BOB. Tell me your thoughts, please. "From what I've heard and the 88's I've handled it is made to the same quality as the 500 series, but without the Mossberg tang safety, it has a Remington style cross bolt safety. I think it's a good gun, you stated you want it for home defense? Good choice Do you find this valuable? |

Personally, I think the ergonomics of the action release and tang safety are the primary selling point of Mossberg shotguns, and without them you might as well go for an 870, which is fitted and finished better.

Maverick is a little cheaper though. Really, however, you make a point, but I like the look of the Maverick better than the 870.Thanks for your input. Do you find this valuable? |

The 870 will always be my first love when it comes to shotguns. That said if I want a shotgun and I don't have the cash for an 870 I'm going to get an 88 and use the spare money on ammo and other necessities. Do you find this valuable? |

I consider a Mosssberg to be a cheap low quality gun and as I understand it a Maverick 88 is a cheaper lower quality Mossberg that I believe is made in Mexico using more plastic parts.Don't think I will be buying one . I've bought numerous used Remington shotguns ffor $100-$150 so why buy something like a Maverick? I recently bought a S&W pump shotgun which is a cheap low quality gun too but only paid $50, guess if I came across a maverick 88 priced like that I might buy it 1 out of 2 found this valuable. " I consider a Mosssberg to be a cheap low quality gun and as I understand it a Maverick 88 is a cheaper lower quality Mossberg that I believe is made in Mexico using more plastic parts.I don't really consider them to be "Low Quality" per say so much as sloppy. The action on every Mossberg or Maverick I've ever felt was sloppy compared to an 870. I don't know about the newer Mavericks but the old ones are made in Mexico. They're almost identical internally to a 500 though. I don't think either gun is exactly flimsy or anything like that. Like I said though, my brother has been shooting one for around a decade and it's still going strong. I'll always like the 870 more, but I wouldn't really hesitate to buy an 88 if I was strapped for cash and needed a shotgun. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I kinda like to look at it like I'm comparing a Mosin Nagant and a Mauser. They're both bolt actions, they're both durable. The Mosin Nagant has a sloppy action compared to the the Mauser, but it's cheaper. If I only had the cash for the Nagant I'd buy one, but if I found a Mauser for the same price I'd probably buy that instead. Do you find this valuable? |

The way I look at Mossbergs is this; they don't fit well, they rattle, but they have a hell lot better controls, loading is easier and they come in some pretty neat setups.Remingtons are just nicer guns. They're well-fitted, reliable and such. Both guns have a very wide market for customization options. Problem with the Maverick 88 for me, is it takes away the primary advantages of the Mossy - ergonomics. At that point, it's a Rem 870 without the excellent craftsmanship. Do you find this valuable? |
