At the request of several members in firearm-bereft areas, I've added this thread to the mix. Same drill; pick your favorite melee weapon, and why.My #1 nomination is the standard hammer. It's light enough, compact, more than powerful enough to do the job, cheap, and has tons of uses as a tool. Nominated so far: Hammer. Axe. Tomahawk Spear Machete Kukri knife Entrenching tools (includes Special Forces shovel.) Crowbar Mace Framing Axe Falcata ASP baton. Katana Monadnock PR-24 Bayonet Cutlass Pole-arms pickaxe War club Yo-Yo Ninjato Crowbar 6 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you? |

Vietnam style Tomahawk. It works well as a weapon and a tool. It's a proven killer. The Spike is designed to penetrate a Kevlar or steel helmet, so use against a Z's skull sounds pretty good to me. They don't weigh all that much, and they aren't as cumbersome as a lot of other melee weapons. Even some the more expensive versions don't generally cost as much as a lot of higher dollar weapons (Swords and such). My favorite so far is this one, http://www.americantomahawk.com/products/vtac.htm Do you find this valuable? |

I am a machete fan. If you get a good one, it can be used for cutting, chopping, and if turned flat, as a hammer. Not so good for stabbing motions, but for just about anything else you'd need an edged weapon for, it's tops.*edit* I'm going to get specific - I am really liking the Cold Steel Katana Machete. Easy to handle, pretty versatile, and swank to look at... Do you find this valuable? |

I would like to nominate the Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel. less than 2feet long and only 26 oz. has bladed edges and and has divets for actuall digging. It can be used as a bladed weapon, hatchet, throwing axe, wood chopping axe, machete and almost anything else.

I'm gonna go with a kukri knife, it's long enough to be used as a machete in a pinch and short enough to be used as a knife. Saves weight by not having to carry two tools.

I'd have to say the crowbar, more then able to crack open heads and gives you the ability to pry open things like doors or crates, smash windows, open some barricades(like boards) even move heavy sewer lids for those ballsy enough to go underground.

I'm going to nominate the buttstock of a Mosin-Nagant. It's got a metal buttplate and is made of durable wood, and even has a hardy shellac so blood splatter wont stain the beautiful grain. It also comes with some plumbing or something on the other end, but I'd never use that.

Sounds like my usual standby is taken, I'll nominate my partner's zombie killing weapon of choice =^_^= Mace and shield. For indoors use, you need something that allows you to body check surprises off of you, and the mace is prefered because it is much less likely to break or get stuck in a skull. Also, the cutting edge of the axe is only necessary for dealing with grappling range threats, which the shield largely negates. =^_^= Do you find this valuable? |

As axes and hammers have both been mentioned, why not combine the two. I nominate the Riggers Framing Axe:http://www.dynamitetoolco.com/Estwing-E3-R-Riggers-Framing-Axe-p/est-e3-r.htm Hammer on one side and axe on the other, with a full one piece steel handle that will probably never bend or break. Whether for splitting firewood or splitting heads, pounding tent stakes or bustin' skulls, the Riggers Framing Axe has you covered. Do you find this valuable? |

I'm surprised nobody has said this yet, but I'd also like to nominate the Ghurka Kukri. It uses a chopping rather than a slashing or piercing cut, and should penetrate skulls just as well or better than most other single handed knives, and it's one of the most badass bush/camp knives I've ever used. In an unusual reversal of, "you get what you pay for," you can pay $100 bucks or more for a kukri that ends up being a cheap-ass piece of crap, but really decent quality kukris can be had new for $40 or less if you shop around a little. Yeah, Kukri are good and all, but their range is even worse than most hatchet's. =*_*= I say if you want a weapon, go with a long kukri, =^_^= A falcata (or kopes, whichever name you want) Its basically just a long and less curved kukri that was made for fighting. They were ancient world armor and shield busters. Do you find this valuable? |

Okay, so I was going to nominate the katana, but it's a very specialized weapon and I won't advise it to most, and if a lot of mall ninjas vote it'll end up on top.So, hatchet (tomohawk is a throwing hatchet, I mean a standard hatchet), cutlass (yeah, I know, I know, but it's a good weapon, really), and bayonet (really more of a weapon accesory, but still, it's a good melee weapon that can be attached to a gun for good melee backup without having to switch weapons.) Hatchet Cutlass Bayonets Do you find this valuable? |

I guess, I don't think I'd want to use a kukri as my PRIMARY melee weapon, given the lack of reach. A few kukris are at least as long as the average machete, though, which for some reason that has always eluded me, seems to be the go to anti zombie melee weapon in most circles, so I figured that the kukri was at least good enough to mention. "Problem is, where're you gonna find a quality one? Do folks still make them?"Aside from the mass production manufacturers (kabar, cold steel and the like) I'd think that anyone who could make a kukri could make a falcata if you asked them nicely. Given that some kukris are only $30-50, and fairly good ones at that, I wouldn't expect to pay more than $100 from the same maker, if you could convince them to turn one out. Monadnock PR-24 and ASP Extendable Batons. Both can pass the coconut test, light, durable and concealable. Obviously a collapsed ASP is more easily hidden than the solid PR-24, but I have a soft spot for them. My Monadnock has seen plenty of use and I'm still putting her through Hell just so I can contact Monadnock and ask them to replace it. Do you find this valuable? |

Come on guys, this is a ZOMBIE thread! You have to have the katana in there!(FWIW, I'd be voting for my two top choices: claw hammer and kukri, but the katana is ubiquitous, and it'd be terrible not to have it nominated) 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
