Doomsday Preppers
Aug 1 2011, 2:25 PM EDT
I saw a National Geographic Special about families that are preparing for bad times coming. It is interesting how different people have come up with their way of surviving bad times and the reaon for those times (none of which involved Zs.I personally don't think that prepping a place in a populated area is worth the time or money. A good BOB that will enable you to get out into the countryside to a more defendable place is the only solution I see for those who are unlucky enough to live in an urban area. Two of the groups are doing that but the other two are just stockpiling for some else as far as I see. Any comments on the show or my evaluation? P.S. the show did convince my wife that learn to shoot and practicing the skill is a good thing, something I had been unable to do! :) 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Well, it depends. I've thought about this a lot, and prepping an urban location does have some advantages in disasters. I don't think I've seen the show you're speaking of, but I can speak to some of your post.In the majority of incidents, police and other emergency responses in small, personal emergencies is much faster. While I don't advocate relying solely on emergency services, here's a scenario: you're having a heart attack or showing the first symptoms of a stroke at home. In a suburban or urban area, EMT's will be there in minutes after first notification (which will likely occur sooner - more people to find you & make the call), and you'll be in a hospital much sooner than if you were in your country cottage that's 50 miles from the nearest hospital and away from the beaten path. When I called 911 with severe abdominal pain in Saint Louis, due to the passing of a large gall stone and the resultant acute pancreatitis, an ambulance was there in less than 10 minutes and I was in one of the Midwest's finest hospitals in less than 20. Blending in to the urban scenery is also very easy to do, if you're smart. Let's say there's a mass evacuation and you decide to hunker down quietly, you're one home in a literal sea of homes. The likeliness of being singled out is minimal, giving you time to prepare an escape to a more rural location. Gotta have food and water set aside for this to work though! Those things being said, I think urbanites should spend more time on self-defense oriented training and self preservation, because there are MANY more 2-legged predators around. A solid BOB to make your escape to a rural setting (maybe with family or friends) and an urban-appropriate arsenal are must-haves IMO. Urbanites should also invest in a small plot of farmable land in which they can evacuate, as trying to stay in the city when AHBL is foolish. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

PS: Cool thread! Compliment inbound.PPS: AHBL = All Hell Breaks Loose PPPS: I come from an interesting perspective on this topic - I'm currently living in Rural South Texas, but I just moved from very urban Saint Louis, MO. However, up until I was a teenager I lived in mostly rural settings. I'm kind of some crazy crossbreed of urban and country! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I dont think everyone has the option of having a retreat with thirty acres of farmable land to escape to. I lived in cities until about a decade ago, thats where the majority of jobs are, I now live in the country and to be honest if I didnt have the experience I do I would be unemployed and hungry.I much perfer living where I do, but my children moved away to get decent jobs, they have to prepare with what they have not what they want. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. I liked watching it, and i'm rather envious of that garden greenhouse thingone of the people on said show has a youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/southernprepper1 http://www.youtube.com/user/engineer775?blend=3&ob=5 here's one of there websites http://thesurvivalmom.com/ and another http://gardenpool.org/ and here is a thread on another website i frequent http://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=182227 apparently one of the people on the show visits the site, and she claims that much of the footage is faked (i believe it, had to make it more interesting) Do you find this valuable? |

I like the pool setup also but I would prefer the location out of the city. Problem around my area for gardens is the deer population but in a melt down that is good bait for another source of protein!:)

"really? which two would those be? if you don't mind me asking"David (Southernprepper1) and Scott (Engineer77) are the ones who have the compound/farm, and the wood gasifier truck. Here is David's YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/southernprepper1 He has a LOT of good info there. Takes quite a while to navigate through it all. 5 out of 5 found this valuable. While it may not be ideal for you, there are more ways of surviving than going out to Uncle Cletus's farm with a DPMS AR-15 slung over your shoulder.

Bumping due to a new NatGeo Preppers series starting Feb 7, 2012 at 9 PM. And man, some of the "preppers" they are following have me concern. Oh well, whether positive or negative, I am sure we can learn something from them. Do you find this valuable? |

Did anyone watch the show? What were your thoughts both positive and negative? I thought each party had positives and negatives. I would say out of all of them, the following will have problems making it.1) Christopher Nyerges, The Street Survivor - seems to not like firearms. Not that I would carry one in LA until the stuff hit the fan. California hates gun users. In addition, he wants to stay within city limits after the Earthquake. Why would anyone want to stay in a devastated city that will turn into a toxic and criminal cesspool is beyond me? In addition, the places he was looking for food can become quite inundated with water during very wet years. 2) Kathy Harrison, The Doris Day of Doom - her strong opposition to using firearms and some of the people she associates with will be her undoing especially that bare footed hippy dude that hangs out with them. What I found strange, is the experts did not critique them on some of the other obvious problems. For example, the Hippy Couple with the two story shipping container house. I would bet the shipping container house is not ready for an earthquake and the second story would come tumbling down. In addition, why conjoin them? If the Earth moves during a polar shift, the moving earth is going to damage the containers where they are conjoined. On a positive note, I really like the Hippy Couple's Methane Digester. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

You probably can order the videos when they go on sale at Nat Geo. Just like we can for Merlin. Bear is cool! I was watching him the other day - crazy SAS Operatives ... lol
