Well, hiya there. Long time lurker and stalker. Wanted to spill the beans on my idea...

I was thinking. Small group. Small base. Somewhere Isolated, lotsa canned foods. plots of land, fruit seeds, grains. some vegtables. Cinder blocks, possible location, forest or maybe in some natural cliff-depression. Whatcha think?

This is not so much of an idea as it is a list of potential building materials, supplies and possible locations. You may want to come up with some kind of an actual plan if you want to survive.

Why bother building something after the fact. There are plenty of fortified sttructures around...you just have to look for them. Once the zombies attack...you probably wont have the time to build anything.

Isolation is always a good idea...but keep in mind...you will have to venture out for food and supplies...so you may not want to go too far away from your raiding grounds. If you have to drive too far to get things then your just burning fuel you can't spare. If you are on foot...well...a simple supply run could end up being be an all day task that will probably get you and your group killed.

I think that it is good to develope a short term and a long term plan. In the short term...you need to concentrait on survival. You can worry about building defencive bases in the long run...once you have the situation under "control" and you feel that you are relitivly "safe".

Aye, I mean, different settings call for different plans. I'm not going to be a driver, Bikes, if anything. I'm also trying to go for less "raid" and more "self-sufficiency" - small plot farmin. Fishing, maybe, if I'm close to the shore. Husbandry might be a no-no. The short plan is the basics- Don't let panic consume you, don't fall for obvious traps, be perceptive for not-so-obvious traps, and move on. Long term, well, i've kinda spelled it out already...

And I've always been a bit of a dreamer. Every setting has its pros and cons, but I'm thinking just to go out, build a little slice of turf, keep a stiff upper lip, and not being a hero/villain.

Like I said...isolation is a good idea. It may only be a matter of time before the undead wonder out of the cities and come looking for you. So even isolation wont last forever.

Trying to be self sustaining has it limitations as well. Farm equipment breaks down, infrastructure will fail and you will run out of the things that you use. You will have to venture out and get materials, parts and supplies eventually. Just keep that in mind. No one can stay totally isolated forever.

I get what you are saying though. You have the start of a good idea...just work on it a bit and turn it into some kind of actual plan. Keep your plan flexible...because things do not always go according to the plan...you know what I mean.

Yea...."be prepared, be flexible, because it's gone FUBAR already, and might (no, Murphy's law dictates will,) happen again, in some fashion"
