Why not stay in a single place? Also my survival plan
Aug 9 2011, 9:22 AM EDT | Post edited: Aug 9 2011, 9:22 AM EDT
So yeah, I've been lurking around the internets somewhat, and apparently the movies say "OMG YOU CAN'T STAY IN A SINGLE PLACE, YOU MUST ALWAYS KEEP ON TEH MOVE" Is that really true? I mean whats wrong with holing up in your house or whatever. I understand that zombies may swarm where you live, but here's my current situation: I live in an apartment in Switzerland. I'm on the first floor, but it is impossible to enter any part of my apartment from outside if you're a zombie. The back has a balcony and the drop to the ground from that balcony is like 5 ft. but no zombie short of 9 foot tall could clamber onto the balcony. So my location is low for a quick bug out if need be, but not low enough for zombies to climb in. I was planning on holing up here with my family when the outbreak starts, and board up the many windows and barricade the door, and stay in the apartment until supplie run out, then break into my neighbor's apartment room (assuming they're infected, gone, or dead) and take their supplies. When those run out, repeat with the other 4-6 apartment rooms in this building. I live in a suburbs area, so it's not too densely populated unlike america (6 apartment rooms in one building as opposed to 10 or so in an American apartment). Also, there are 2 large grocery stores within a 5 minutes bike ride of my apartment. When supplies are all gone, or if my apartment neighbors are still alive, then I'll go on the move to look for more supplies. Also, since the Swiss have their infamous militia that can organize within minutes, as well as the extremely high rates of gun ownership here, do you guys think I have an okay survival plan? Who is it that said that you always have to stay on the move? I don't know of anyone here who is planning to become the road warrior.

Many member's plans include bugging in, meaning staying home for as long as it is safe to do so. Some people plan to bug out, but they already have a place in mind where they're going to go (well, hopefully). They're not just going to start walking and hope for the best.

As far as your plan, if you already have a decent amount of food and water stocked up, staying home until it runs out is definitely an option. The grocery stores, however, will probably be picked clean by the time you get there.

The drop to the ground from your balconey is 5 feet?...if you can reach it you can pull yourself up...which means any one over 4 feet tall should be able to reach it. also dpending on type of Zedheads..say Ragers that are hyper active..I dont think they will have a problem getting up there. Your plan is basically a scavenger plan, once your supplies you have now run out and doesn't sound like you have that much , you plan to scavenge for more.
What makes you think that you will survive but most of your neighbors wont and that they will be kind to leave food and supplies behind for you. Hate to beak it to you but what you are planning is what they all will be doing too
A plan where you are going scavenge for food I think has to be a plan where you will have to be a nomad looking for supplies. Your home area would soon be stripped probably

Well I'm like 5'6" and if I raise my arms all the way above my head as far as they will go, I still have to give a small jump to grab on the the balcony. At any rate, yeah it probably wouldn't stand against super strong ragers (their strong enough to do a pull up right?), which is why I will barricade the abundance of windows that this apartment has.

I dunno, some of my friends said that in the movies the rule is to always be on the move. But then again, I suppose thats why they're movies...

You're probably right. In that case, what the heck do I do when I run out of supplies?

If everything really goes to hell, we'd all eventually have to become scavengers. That doesn't mean it should be your first option. Stock up on food, water, and emergency supplies.

There are some foods that lend themselve naturally to stockpiling. Dried beans, rice, flour, dried vegetables. most of these are your basic staples

Available here in most grocery stores in 1 lb bags. you can build your supplies a little at a time picking up a few bags each time you go to the grocery store. At $1.00-$1.50 a bag its not a huge expense, Store them in an airtight container, and they will keep.

And make sure you take your old stuff every few weeks / months and make a meal of it. Keeps it from going stale and, more importantly teaches you what foods work and do not work over time for your tastes.

I don't know if you've read the new member guide yet, but there's a link to the "teenage survival" page in there. It's about talking to your parents about preparing for disasters.
