Survival with Man's Best Friend
Aug 16 2011, 10:57 PM EDT | Post edited: Aug 16 2011, 10:57 PM EDT
So, recently (Just about three hours ago, actually), my mom surprised me by going to a rescue and buying me a Chocolate Lab mix puppy. /)^3^(\ Only three months old, so I still have a lot to teach her, and she ain't gonna be alerting me when zeds are near any time soon.

And, me being me, on the ride home I immediately thought "Crap, I'm going to have to throw some kibble and stuff in my BOB, aren't I?" So, new thread time!

What adjustments to a survival plan would you suggest making to accommodate a 'new member of the family'?

Get a backpack for your new best friend, she can carry a redundancy kit for you and supplies for her, there's a guy on youtube (Beast123 I think) that has a kit for his dog that has some survival supplies for him and her.

You will have to add some supplies of her's to your own BOB like more food and water, maybe put food in your kit that both of you could eat?

Keep in mind that she's only a three month old puppy, I don't know if strapping a pack on her is the best thing to do. Maybe when she's older, I'd do that, but maybe not right now.

True, still, you should still get ideas for a DBOB (Doggy Bug Out Bag)

Wait, do you have a harness for her? If you do I'm sure you could put a few items on that, I saw a vid on youtube of some guy who made a pouch out of a bandana that could go around her neck?

I know a few guys who have some of this gear for their dogs including Kevlar vests with the MOLLE set up. Mind you they're hunting dogs, but in a bug out situation even putting a med kit on your dog's vest would be extra supplies incase you lose your bag for some reason.

A kevlar vest with MOLLE points for my *puppy*? I don't have/can afford a plate carrier for MYSELF, let alone her!

I was making a suggestion for when she's a little older. And as I stated the guys who have the Kevlar use them to hunt hogs.

But that site also has collars better suited to training your puppy. Conventional collars choke them when on a leash and that can alter their mentality to either hate you or fear you. Agressive dogs are a handful and cowed dogs are nearly useless as much as I hate to say it

You can get kevlar vests that are only a few layers that will protect her stomach from getting scratched up running through fields and stuff, I can't remember how much they are, next time I'm at Bass Pro I'll check on 'em

Well, now that the thread's open again, I guess I'll add my .02

I'd say either train her so she won't bark for sh*t, or just accept that it will be a major risk taking her with you. If she freaks out when she sees other people, she'll be a major liability. But if she's excessively friendly, she might run up to a zed and go "IloveyouIloveyouIloveyouIloveyou!" and get nommed on.

I think that either she has to be extremely well trained and very intelligent, or you'll just have to let her go if the zeds come a-knocking.

Sickly funny

@Why
Check out Nutnfancy's channel on Youtube (can find it easily via my profile) He has made some cool gear for his best friend. might take some time to find the vids though, he has something like 100 on his channel. The winter shelter series features some of the dog gear.

a lab eh? great dogs make sure to keep them in shape and to avoid hip problems do not let it on the furnature. Jumping up and down off couches as a pup is a huge factor in that breed developing hip problems later in life. Lift them until they are full grown if you must have them on the furniture. It is for their future health not saving couches that they are to stay off. Ligaments can be perminantly damaged as with the joints. Okay my warning about dog joint health is complete. I just love dogs.

Since your breed is rather strong, i suggest a small lightweight wheeled cart connected to a harness allowing the dog to have its own supplies to carry. Lightweight materials would increse the load and a back harness (the best kind of leash) the supplies would mean nothing to it. Pulling something behind it will reduce the strain on the animals back allowing it to carry it's gear for longer periods. Don't overload it's cart. Dogs have been used as pack animals before, think dog sled, the trick is to keep the dog in shape (good idea no matter what you do) and not to overload it. Dogs can't haul all your supplies or you but they can haul their own if you keep them in good health.

We infantalize dogs. When returned to their natural state they will source their own food. The relationship between man and dog begain over sharing resources. We did not create dogs they came to us. We have merely shaped some dogs. They came to us because we were a source of food. Over time it evolved from scavanging our camps to a partnership. We can hunt prey they cannot and they can find what we cannot. Do not baby your dog into a moron. Since you said it was a mixed breed (closer to a natural dog) it should have little trouble adapting. My sheepdog on the otherhand would try and heard the zombies........... poor pax.

Naming an animal after food is a pretty bad Omen. Such as my rabbit Kibbles, who died because of a dog (Kibbles and bits) chasing him (the dog only wanted to play, but still.)
