You think sheet metal will protect you?

HAHA. So I got an idea while surfing youtube. I found a video about green tip 5.56 62 gr NATO ammo. Military desig. is the M855 cartridge.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dGxRw8Jq70&feature=fvwrel
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/AMM223C-5.html

The video, and then proof that its legal to have. While I'm sure several of you are aware of the capabilities of such a round, watching the video makes me think "damn, those kids/people that want to go mad max on their cars are in for a shock"

Makes me think that way to such a point.. that I'm considering a 5.56 ak from arsenal now just because of seeing that video. Then again, a 16 inch barrel won't be producing the same velocities. Regardless, I felt it necessary to bring up to show.. quite the nasty effect of some ammunition that costs just a tad bit more than standard NATO 5.56.

Realistically rifle protection for most vehicles just isn't possible. It's better to focus on protecting against pistol caliber rounds.

It's sorta like the big fuss the media was making when the 5.7x28mm came out. Every idiot newscaster was calling them "copkillers". Most people don't realize that nearly all rifle rounds will overcome ballistic protection.

In related news, the Ministry of Defence in the UK is selling off armoured vehicles. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

An interesting thing is on the spectrum of ballistic protection, anything that can stop pistol rounds and shotgun slugs (soft armor aside) will generally stop normal 5.56mm ball. Pistol-rated bulletproof glass, steel plate, that sorta stuff. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Oooh, do you have a link?
I'd like to know how much they go for. I can only guess it's not quite the same level of corruption in the US, but you never know.

I've shot it out of my M&P15 and it's still in 3000fps territory. I've found it at gun shows and keep it around for uh 'contingencies' And true it isn't much more then your regular ball ammo. I don't remember the exact numbers as far how far it will penetrate but i do know it will easily go through regular car doors... Do you find this valuable?

I carry that daily. The reason its so much better is the steel core penetrator in the middle almost like a minurature sabot round the outer casing is stopped/slowed by the armor but the steel core keeps traveling. if you do plan on mad maxing in anything it better have alot of sloped angled plating like the crude but durable t-34... if a round hits the flat surface it will penetrate... as you saw in the video.. but if you think thats something look at the NATO 7.62 API round those are awesome to shoot.

Not only that, but layering is also key. Having two half inch pieces of steel with a one inch gap between them is more effective than a single inch thick piece of steel.

this is true. i'd be a little worried of the extra weight... but if anything id use chains welded to the top of the slanted armor and hang loose plates (simple chainmail effect) a round hits the mail plate causing it to swing hopefully and hit the other plate not penetrate it... and hope it didnt add too much weight. the more weight on the vehicle the less you can carry in the vehicle....
