Well, I've lost faith in Remington for a while.

Hey guys, here's another in my never-ending series of threads involving stories from my life.

As many of you know, I recently bought a left-handed Remington 870 Express. The first time I shot it, it worked fine. However, when I shot it yesterday, it stovepiped about every other shot. We took the gun apart, and nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary, so we were stumped.

Today, we took it to the gunshop in town that I bought it from. They tried it, shot it, and got the same results. So, they offered to swap it for a new one. We agreed, and they got another one. They shot it...and it stovepiped again. So, they got ANOTHER 870 (from a different batch), and it STILL stovepiped. Finally, they gave up, and offered to give our money back.

Just wanted to see what y'all's opinion was on this. I'd always thought the 870 was a fine gun; now I have my doubts. Also, I kinda mean this as a warning to anyone thinking of buying one :)

"Surely you tried different ammo?"
Well, we didn't. But the store did. Tried Federal, Remington, and Winchester birdshot in each one. Same results.

>now glad I'm working on getting a Stoeger O/U instead of an 870

Thanks for telling us. Maybe they'll fix it over time, but this close to my purchase I don't want a mis-manufactured gun.

Yeah. From what I'm hearing now, it may be the Express line; they're apparently the "cheapo" one. But, it still seems odd that ANY 870 would do that.

And yeah, I like O/Us as well.

While we're on the subject, how does this gun look for general survival use?

I asked John and he said I should even be able to pick clays with it, saying that the average 870 barrel is 18", but he's so far in OPERATORville, I don't know.

"Noob question: WTF is stovepiped?"
A case stuck out head-out in the action of a gun, like this:

I think 870s are awesome guns. But I really wouldn't be surprised if Remington released a few batches of lemons.
It seems like almost every other manufacturer is having trouble with quality control lately. I know SIG has had a crap ton of trouble with it. Bushmaster had some problems with their ARs and ACRs for a while there. I know Remington owns Bushmaster so I'm not really surprised.
There's a ton of reliable, awesome 870s out there though. I might suggest looking for another one, maybe an older used one.

"Hey guys, here's another in my never-ending series of threads involving stories from my life.

"
my brother bought an 870 for his son. his son took it out the next morning to shoot clays. the gun fired fine, but it he couldnt cycle the pump. my brother thought his son was being a whimp but it turned out that the metal case on the winchester ammo he bought at walmart had expanded to the point where the action was locked.

my question is how do you stove pipe a pump action shotgun? i only ever heard of stove piping with autos. it seems to me that you may be using cheap ammo or maybe you are not fully cycling the pump. i know that you know guns and your not a noob but some guns have a different feel in the pump and i have jammed rounds in different shotguns because the pump action felt like i had fully cycle it.

not calling your gun knowledge into question, im just trying to single out the cause of your problem. i wouldnt think it odd if you had bought 1 junk 870, but when they go through 3 at the gunstore then refund your money....sounds pretty strange. maybe the gunstore is doing something funny like selling shotguns that didnt pass quality control in the factory. ive seen that kind of thing happen before

Was the new one a lefty? Might just be Remington having problems with the lefty models, if that's the case. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Yeah it was. And that's possible. Until I find a replacement, I'll probably just use my Moss 500 or my dad's remington 1100 (If I could find one of THOSE in lefty, it'd be awesome.)

didnt consider that. remington may not catch something like that to quickly since left handed people are a minority of consumers.

Sounds strange that a whole line would be messed up. Don't they test them in the factory? Also could it be that they were modified by the gun store? Do you find this valuable?

Hmm.... yeah, Remington has been making 870s (right handed) for decades - I don't think they'd mess them up very easily. But since a left handed model isn't just a flip of parts, I think they could have made mistakes with them in the process.
