UK First Gun

Ok,I have finally decided it's time to get a gun. Being in the UK, the easiest to get should be a shotgun. Tomorrow I take step one- buy and fit a police approved gun case. I am going to keep an informal record of time and costs involved and i'll update as I progress.PS I was prompted to do this after an offer from my father to give me his two guns if I get a shotgun certificate, as he no longer uses them due to poor health, so the extra gun I get will be just for me. Update- 22-08-11 Ok, got a 3 gun wall mounted case - £140.00 so far. Update- 24-08-11 Application posted, with 4 photos and cheque for £50.00, expected waiting time according to licencing authority website 6-8 weeks. Update- 31-08-11 Confirmation of receipt from police authority. My application will now be vetted, references and background checked and a home visit arranged by firearms officer. Update- 12-10-11 Spoke to firearms officer today. Background checks complete and they have told me to expect a call to arrange my home visit from a local constable. Update- 26-10-11 Called this morning by local constable. Visit to be tomorrow morning, should last about 15 minutes. Update 27-10-11 Visited today and approved for certificate. Now another 6-8 week wait for the document Update 16-11-11 Certificate arrived today, a little quicker than expected. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

good luck mate. I'll be interested to see the costs involved with the gun cases and the like.

Popular opinion should be a minor influence on your very personal choice of weapon. See what you like, use it.

Pretty sweet man, are pumps legal over there? If not, a bolt action or a double barrel would be good

"Pretty sweet man, are pumps legal over there? Sounds really great considering if he gets his certificate, he can get as many shotguns as he likes. Do you find this valuable? |

I am going to keep an informal record of time and costs involved and i'll update as I progress. Also the heavy burden of choosing my gun will rest with the community - so get moving on the voting :)Dual certificate is worth going for if you can. Only a little more paperwork, reduced fees. Usually called a Coterminus Firearms and Shotgun Certificate. Whichever you decide, they ask you to specify how many guns you want on the certificates, and how much ammunition you (a) want to hold (b) will buy in one go. Because the certificate lasts for 5 years, estimate how many guns you are likely to have at the end of the term. Two of your fathers, plus the new purchase, plus a couple more down the line is reasonable. Ammo 'to buy' limit is easiest to work out. Look at the volume discounts you can get. Usually for bullets it is 1,000 and 5,000 rounds where the margins change. So put the one that works out best for you financially. The 'to hold' limit is going to be the 'to buy' limit plus whatever you think is a reasonable minimum before you purchase a new batch. The catch is if you have a buy limit of 1,000 and hold limit of the same, you can lose your licence simply for buying more bullets before you are completely out. Do you find this valuable? |

This time around, I am only going for the Shotgun Certificate. Adding section 1 firearms would complicate things in terms of use - I would need to be a member of a specific gun club and/or have permission to shoot on private land - also the police are stricter on the security arrangements. The gun club I did look at recommended putting quite a high ammo hold/buy on a firearms licence and also to include every calibre you may possibly get, not just what you expect to get - kind of a just in case scenario. "Is there any penalty to putting a huge projected ammo count? Is there any law regarding reloading / purchasing reloaded ammunition?"For both guns and ammo, the more you put, the more they will question it. The idea is that if a single person wants to have twenty rifles and two hundred thousand bullets on hand, that maybe they aren't so much shooting recreationally as they are stocking up for a siege. Took a bit longer than planned (financial reasons), but I finally picked up my first gun today. After long deliberation I decided to go with a Benelli Supernova 12 Bore. One of my main reasons (apart from just liking it) is an ability to increase magazine size with a screw on attachment that doesn't require the services of a gunsmith. Please note, for anyone in the UK, this will turn it into a Section 1 firearm which will require a different certificate, but since I haven't done it yet - not a problem. Do you find this valuable? |

The Benelli currrently is a 2+1.My dad has a Browning Gold Hunter semi and a Lincoln Jeffries side by side - both in 12 bore. He says I can have them next time I visit. Do you find this valuable? |

TBH haven't even loaded it yet. There is a couple of local areas I can try for rough shooting and plenty for clays, but haven't had a chance to get out yet. A little further afield (20 miles) is a club for practical shotgun - tactical target shooting and reloading while moving that I fancy giving a go.

Perchance, you know where to buy "snap caps?" They're a type of dummy round that is colored bright colors so you can tell it from real ammo, and you can use it to practice reloading and whatnot. I also live in the uk and plan to get a gun before the year is out. Not shotgun though, It will have to be a rifle for me. I really like shooting air rifles and would love to use a proper one. What part of the uk do you live in, Sekiro? Do you find this valuable? |
