And meh, I'd still rather not. Sorry."
Okay.

I'm just kidding, it's fine.

I've got time to judge (if you need one), but not really much time to write if we are going for Sept. 1st. Do you find this valuable?

I can judge. I have an in-depth judging sheet put away somewhere I can use for this. Do you find this valuable?

@toxic_shock & John_234: I could use you both as judges, that would be great. So that settles the judges. There's you guys, Sharpie, Pedro, and me. Do you find this valuable?

I'm going to write something up. Also have one question. Are our stories going to be graded on grammatical correctness or just our story telling ability?

Cause I'm from the south and some of my words may not be words in your vocabulary.

Plus don't foget all the comma errors, and what not. I was a science and history geek not a english major.

It depends on the judge. Each judge will do it differently. I personally will include grammatical errors in my judging, as well as correct punctuation; I'm a stickler for that kind of thing.

The occasional typo is fine; I find them in my own work all the time. Just read over your work a few times before you submit it and you should be fine.

The way it's looking right now (With only two participants and five judges) you'll each get some kind of award, guaranteed. You'll also probably both get a "Judges Choice" award. Do you find this valuable?

Me, either. I also can't wait to see if any more people decide to participate.

I think we should find a system we all agree on, so our reviews don't become disproportionate when compared to one another. Alternatively, if it doesn't work too well, I might just write.

The way that I was going to have judges judge is by "vote." Once they've finished all the stories, they'd PM me a filled out version of the template below:

Winner:

Runner-up:

Judge's Choice:

But I also have another plan in mind; I'd write up a "review sheet" that the judges would fill out for each story. The review sheet would be a more complete version of the one below:

Grammar:

Storyline:

Typos:

Character Development:

Consistancy:

Completion:

The judges would then rate each section 1-10, where ten is the best and one is the worst. They'd then just tell me who their Judges Choice award would go to.

What do you think, judges?

This is what I used for that other competition we judged.

Each story will be rated on a one-hundred point scale, in five criteria. The main ideas will be summarized, and the judge must decide if the requirements are effectively met. It is recommended that specific examples from the text are cited.

Name
[Conventions and Fluency] [X / 15]
The first impression of any reader is how easily the text reads. Poor grammar and sloppy pacing will make it a pain to even read the text.

[Characters and Voice] [X / 25]
Voice is not just vocabulary, but the atmosphere established by the nature of the characters and setting. There is no right or wrong, as long as the voice is above all, distinct. Characters are the most significant application of voice, and much of the judgment in this criteria will be based in their portrayal.

[Ideas and Prompt] [X / 20]
How well you maintain the general idea of the prompt, and how creatively you express it, mostly in the plot.

[Reader connection] [X / 30]
This is possibly the most important aspect of a good story, especially shorter ones. It's the combined effect of your characters, plot, and imagery immersing the reader, as well as any underlying messages in the text.

[Technical details and Canon] [X / 10]
Are there are glaringly impossible situations or deviations from canon, if applicable?

[Areas for Improvement]
A brief summary of the writer's strong and weak points, with advice on how to improve.

[Overall Impression and Verdict] [X / 100]
The judge summarizes the writer's text, their opinion of it, and ranks them accordingly.

You just averaged the thing for short and easy ratings, gave tips if you wanted to, then made choices.

That looks good. I'm not opposed to it in any way, so we'll use that unless another judge objects.

This is just my opinion, take it or leave it, but I think it would be better and more challenging to us writers, if each judge has a different grading scale. Say wolfhunter grades one way and john234 grades another way, that makes it that much harder to please both judges and would also make the contest more diverse. Just my two cents.
