Survival with semi young children
Aug 25 2011, 9:24 PM EDT
Hi. I'm YoungerSurvivor, a long time lurker now a member. I am thirteen so that explains my screen name and handle. Anywho, my plan involves my friend's seven year old sister and my nine year old brother. I need some advice on weapons and BOB's.
Do you find this valuable?

Welcome to the site, man. :)It's good to see that you're coming up with a realistic plan that involves the people around you. A lot of people say "I'm gonna go off alone; f*ck my family." Nice to see somethin' more grounded. Anyway, do your friend's brother and sister have any experience with firearms? Like, has their father taught them anything? If not, I'd kinda stay away from guns until they were properly instructed in safety. TBH...I'm not sure what to do about weapons until then; maybe just try your best to keep them out of harm's way. As for BOBs, I'd start with a normal adult BOB. If that proves too heavy, take one or two things out (preferably, things you don't IMMEDIATELY need access to for survival.) Keep doing so until they reach a weight they can handle. Hope that helps a little. Do you find this valuable? |

"Human shields?"That really is a terrible thought. I mean, I hate my parents with a passion few can fathom, but even I wouldn't be that low. @OP: Excluding one's parents at your age is a terrible idea. Up until I turned 16, my plans included my parents and I have an abusive past with them. I understand the appeal of a situation where you can be independent from them, but at the same time, until you're a little older and have the skills and resolve to support yourself, you can't rightly care for anyone else. I'd rethink that aspect of your plan before even considering weapons or supplies, especially weapons. Do you find this valuable? |

In survival situations, most children of the age you are describing are going to want to make themselves as comfortable as possible and wait for rescue. It's actually one the reasons children currently survive so well in most modern disasters.
