What is the minimum you need to feel 100% ready?
Aug 30 2011, 4:53 PM EDT
For me I would want 2 years of food for everyone in my group, 15,000 gallons of gasoline and water, enough land to grow all crops and feed all animals (with room to rotate crops), a rifle, shotgun, and handgun for all in group, 10,000 rounds per gun, cleaning supplies, replacement parts, and fortified housing all far from civilization.

Seems to me like you can never be 100% ready. You could have all the supplies and gear in the world, yet something out of your control could kill you pretty easily. Even with all the supplies you listed, it couldn't stop you getting pneumonia and dying.Kinda like the line "No place is safe; only safer." You can never be completely prepared; only more prepared. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I think that two weeks of "preparedness" is probably the minimum I would feel comfortably prepared. We're nowhere near that now.In all honesty, without stockpiling outside of my current residence, there's no way I could fit 2 weeks of food and water for three people here. I'd need to either build or purchase a large locking crate that would sit outside, within which I can store food and water. There's simply not enough space inside our home. However, I've got a job interview at 9:00 AM tomorrow for a security position with Allied-Barton, and this will hopefully open some doors for us. I plan on setting aside no less than $50 each month for long-term survival acquisitions - but the bulk of the money I make will hopefully go toward moving out and into our own place. A totally self-sufficient underground bunker complex would make me feel more or less 100% ready.

There is only one set up that would make me COMPLETELY ready:1) "Safe House" http://ifitshipitshere.blogspot.com/2010/05/safe-house-in-poland-is-modern-fortress.html 2) With an armory instead of the pool house they show... 3) And a self-sufficient, LARGE "Garden Pool" inside the fortress grounds http://gardenpool.org/ If I were a multi-millioniare, and could actually afford to have the architect build a second version of that house for me (assuming he would even duplicate it, out of pride or principle), that's what I'd do. Now, if we're talking realistic, within my financial grasp plans? Nothing would make me 100% ready. Every other plan that I can think of has at least ONE hole that leaves you open for attack, starving, or dehydration. Do you find this valuable? |

I think to be "100% Ready" more important then what you have is that you know how and are ready to use what you have.Just because you have huge amounts of supplies stock piled away doesn't make you "ready" it just makes you well suplied Instead of fantasy plans such as having a fort with 15,000 gals of gasoline etc etc. it is better to be "ready" with what you actually have . You are never completely ready. You can have the ideal BOL, but your life will put you miles from it. And so you need the ability to get back at short notice.Technology and equipment gets updated and advances all the time. Even if you have the ideal BOL today, tomorrow it will need an addition, or a replacement. People change over time. Additions to the family, changes in the dynamic. Your brother gets married and has a couple of kids. That's three extra mouths to feed. Do you find this valuable? |

All I need is: A SHOTGUN, RIFLE, AND FOUR WHEEL DRIVE - A COUNTRY BOY WILL SURVIVE! Had to through in a little Hank this morning.I don't think there could be any such thing as being 100% ready for something like a zombie apocalypse. It's better to be able to do with what you have, instead of dreaming in one hand and ******** in the other. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I feel 100% ready right now for the simple fact that I know i can't control everything but i will do what needs to be done without compromising my moral integrity. If that brings me to an early end then so be it. I think being ready is more of a factor of your mental, emotional, and spritual state more than anything. Is anyone really ready to see a corpse walking down the street devouring infants on a playground. Lets be real, if that were to happen right in front of any of us, we would probably shut down. Care to expand on the gear you've already mentioned in it? For example do you have any food or water stocked, or any specialist survival equipment etc? Do you find this valuable? |

I'm 100% ready now!Am I as ready as I'd like to be? NO WAY! I'm right with anyone who wished they had an armory, platoon of battle-ready friends, endless supplies, maybe an abrams Tank... Do I have it? nope :( My philosophy is I'm as ready as i'm gonna be. My machete is a year old today! :) and I have my BOB and gear, and thats it. No guns yet, but i'm looking at getting a crossbow cause I dont need a license. If I get that, i'll be that much more ready. Scenic route aside, when SHTF, it's roll time - like it or not. So i'm "Ready" like it or not. lmao thats kinda funny. I could imagine being in the shower and all of a sudden I hear the patio door smash open with me going "Hold on i'm not done yet!" 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

@ JPTank lmao, yes! Pool house on one side, armory on the other! And I have thought about the same thing as you sometimes in the shower; "What if the SHTF *right now*?" lol, imagine? All that gear planning, just to be running through the hallway to your room *nekkid* trying to grab your BOB and some clothes. ;p(I really like your profile, by the way. I'm still new, so I'm trying to build my BOB and I still hafta take pictures of my weapons/equipment.) Anyway, more on topic, I have 90% of what I need already...I just have one or two items on my list before I'm satisfied and feel as 100% ready *as my means allow me to be*. As for my post above, Hell Yeah!! That's my IDEAL situation, which will NEVER happen. But this post is about what we would need to feel 100% completely ready for Z-Day. And that's what I posted. :) (Seriously though, I really do want to do that "Garden Pool," as it's incredibly efficient even if an apocalypse or disaster situation never occurs.) Ok, this the minimum I would WANT (not need) to have if the apocalypse was to happen tomorrow. (Not that any event on such a scale could happen over night)-BOB -4WD BOV -3 months food X -Large bank of seeds X -.22 rifle # -5000 rounds of .22 ammo X -30-06 bolt action rifle X -500 rounds of 30-06 ammo X -12 gauge shot gun X -1000 rouds of ammunition X -150+ acre BOL # -Largish veggie garde and orchard X -Ample supply of fresh water -Ample supply of game -Poultry -Live stock (cows, goats- milking and sheep) I could go on, but I wont. Now, having said all that you do not need all those items to survive a disaster/economic collapse. One could survive with a rifle, snares, fishing kit and so on if they had the right skills, and that brings me to my main point; all the supplies in the world will do you no good unless you have the skill set to match. You must get out and practise your skills. You wont learn jack from sitting in front of a screen all day. (I think I need take my own advice) 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"My brain and a working body. "I'm with Vagabond on this one. Have gun...will travel. All of this stuff is just stuff. Stuff don't make you ready for anything. I think being 100% "ready" means being mentally prepared to do anything and everything that is needed to survive. That may mean you have to eat things that you would never eat. It may mean that you have to go places you would never go. It may mean that you have to shoot a loved one or a child. These are the things you must mentally prepare for. All the rest is just stuff. I can get stuff just about anywhere. If "you" have stuff I want...well...I am prepared to take all of it from "you" if it means I continue to survive. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Minimium, not max, for 100%1) Food stockpiled for 30 years (rice, flour, sugar, and other "hard to grow here" carbs) - I'm up to 2 years 2) Weapon and ammo stockpile - got the weapons, still working on ammo pile 3) Lumber, nails, etc for fortification and future contruction needs (no where close on this one - just precut window boards) 4) Heirloom seeds and livestock breeder stock Do you find this valuable? |
