Last night I saw this show called "Livin' For the Apocalypse" on TLC. It was kind of akin to the show discussed in this thread: http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/thread/4718198/Discovery+Channel+Series+about+Prepping+looking+for+ParticipantsIt featured three groups of people, ranging from the kind of intelligent, long-term planning that this forum supports to the...well....crazy mofos who make disaster preparation look like a stupid joke. First, there's the normal survivalist guy. He's pretty cool. Seems to have his stuff together, despite a little "out-there" zaniness. Second, there's a couple who is REALLY prepared, and should totally be on this forum IMHO. :p Here's a link to a short video of the couple that was actually intelligent: http://tlc.discovery.com/videos/livin-for-the-apocalypse-meet-an-apocalypse-ready-family.html Note: I REALLY like their "Garden Pond" ecosystem, and plan to implement something similar into my future plans. Lastly, there's...uh...this....cross-dressing, spoiled meat-canning....weirdo couple.....link to video here: http://video.fr.ca.msn.com/watch/video/exclusive-pair-preps-for-zombies-in-apocalypse/1tj9xxvzi For those who want to watch it, it's on TLC tonight as well, believe. Otherwise, opinions? I was really pissed that they went from the awesome couple straight to those purple-clad losers. It ends the whole episode on a "survivalists are crazy weirdos" note, and I feel like they totally disrespected the "actual" survivalists by giving those last two people any airtime at all. Edit: The addresses to the videos didn't show up as a link. Sorry! You can copy/paste them in the browser window :) Do you find this valuable?

Saw some trailers on TLC's site, and from the clips the young couple with the kids seemed the most out there expecting the world to end in 2012 to me at least. The other two couples seemed content on making plans for real world problems devaluation of paper currency and civil unrest. Shame I missed the premier would of liked to have seen it.

I never even saw this advertised. :(This is a good lesson on how reality television will make a fool of you. Even though the prepared couple with good heads on their shoulders were intelligent and informed the loony-toons make them look like loony-toons by association to your average viewer. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Disregarding their beliefs, the young couple was the most prepared for an "actual" apocalypse. They are completely self-sufficient; the only thing they don't have is defense against possible attack...but nobody in the show really had a fortified location; they just had guns in their house. The "purple people" couple was actually CANNING meat, just randomly, sliced ham and odd-and-end bits of pork, beef, and other meats. This is EXTREMELY dangerous if you don't know EXACTLY what you're doing, and these people obviously did not....they were just putting it in jars willy-nilly, which will get you poisoned pretty quick. And yeah, the young couple with the kids was preparing for the world to end in 2012...but we at this forum are preparing for a zombie apocalypse...so....you can't really criticize them for prepping for the worst, esp if you're on this forum. ;p @timberrattler, I totally agree. This is why I don't discuss my survivalist plans with people "outside" of my group, unless we're joking around about "hypothetical" zombie situations. The media is the first to blow every bad situation (i.e. the recent Hurricane Irene) out of proportion and make it look like a doomsday scenario....BUT, at the same time, they make survivalists out to look like wack jobs. Contradictory much? Smh -_- Do you find this valuable? |

I watched it with quite a bit of interest, especially the part with the garden-pond. I found that fascinating. I even went to check out some of Survival Doc's stuff later on YouTube, if only to see more of that wild beard. xDI was extremely disappointed by the last couple. I found myself looking at the canned meat and asking, "Um... is that safe?" and found myself answering my own question the minute I asked. If you have to ask, it probably isn't. The biggest facepalm moment was when they began talking about how they'd eat whatever they'd kill. Including people. What a lovely way to end the show, with absolutely nothing left in the program to wash the proposed idea of human flesh out of people's mouths. Anyone know if that was just a special, or if they're turning it into a series? Do you find this valuable? |

Finally got to see the whole episode on a rebroadcast, and while the purple people were definitively out there I think their presence on the show was to highlight what isn't a good prepper. If I recall rightly the segment before them had a lady talking in depth about how canning needs to be done properly, then cuts to Gidget talking about how she cans everything and seems to have no idea of what to do other than "put food in jar, put lid on jar." However that couple aside the other three were informative and fairly normal, I found Survival Doc to be a little out there but on the same level as John Cohn a.k.a the Professor from Season 1 of "The Colony". I'd like them to continue with it and see it develop as an actual series. Do you find this valuable? |

seemed pretty interesting, but i take another member's stance(can't remember their name) and say that i wouldn't want to be on tv, and if i were, i wouldnt want my face on it.
