9/11 Ten Years On
Sep 11 2011, 2:23 PM EDT | Post edited: Sep 11 2011, 2:23 PM EDT
Ten years ago today the people of New York, the citizens of America and indeed the population of the world were shaken by the destruction of the World Trade Centers.

The actions over the course of those fateful twelve hours set in motion a climate of fear, suspicion and caution which have lasted for the past decade. It is this climate which dictates nations foreign policies, this climate which prompts governments to issue citizens ID cards, and this climate which has opened a rift between the East and the West.

Yet from this Spring it seems a hope emerged, democratic revolutions across the Arab world, denouncement of Al Qaeda by all but the most hard line Islam extremists, and a willingness from the West to offer aid and negotiate.

I wish to invite you all to join me, as is customary every year on the ZSDW, to take five minutes out of your schedule and remember everyone who has died, not only on this fateful day ten years ago, but all victims of its ensuing wars, rebellions and revolutions.

From the emergency services personell at Ground Zero, to the soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and other troubled nations, to the civillians who have lost their lives all across the globe in the name of this conflict, I pay my respects to them all.

I was in grade five when it happened. My thoughts and prayers go out from Ontario. Well said, Mars! We can't take back the past and no one should have to die for war or conflict or to prove a point. We still feel the echo from that one day ten years ago and we'll never forget.
But let us also use this time to remember where we came from. To help us shape our future so it doesn't happen again to anyone. So we learn from our mistakes. And so we live every day in honor of those lost and continue to prepare. Maybe if we prepare enough it might just be what helps us evolve as humans.

The light shines in the darkness. The darkness always flees the light.

I was 5 blocks from the Twin Towers on that day when they where hit. My prayers go out to all who lost their loved ones, both in the attack & in this war & may God send his wrath on those responsible. So again i say " Requiescant in pace" to all affected by the attack. Do you find this valuable?

I was working when the first plane hit, I heard the second plane had hit over the radio. My immediate reaction was, "Where's the third plane?" Then the Pentagon was struck and I thought it was done. Little did I know about the 4th plane, the one the passengers fought back on. To all who died, and to those who struggled on after losing their loved ones, may you find peace. And may we all learn from the first responders, heroes for us, loved ones for some and sorely missed by all of us. Do you find this valuable?

I was in the 1st grade when it happened. Our school chose to not tell us about it, and I was first informed that afternoon. I didn't really understand it at the time; only looking back later did I realize what had happened.

My heart goes out to the families of those who died, and to all the brave men and woman served our country both at the time of the attacks and now.

So many years ago today, hundreds of American citizens were attacked by a group of religious extremists from a desert wasteland, slain in transit while on their way to work, play or to eke out a better life. Let us remember and have a moment of silence for those men, women and children who's innocent lives were cut short by fundamentalists. So on this day, I ask you, my fellow Americans to never forget September 11, 1857, never forget what crazed Mormons are capable of.

History repeats itself it seems.

I have never heard of this, I doubt anyone else has.

Those who forget history are bound to repeat it

I was in third grade. Our teacher wheeled in a TV and we watched part of it before being called into the gym for our parents to pick us. I didn't recognize what had really happened until a few years later. Do you find this valuable?

I was on my way to class at MCC and was picking up a friend of mine from his house. He told me what had happened, but didn't know how bad it was, what kind of plane, etc. He saw it on the TV real quick on his way out. We just basically thought it might have been a private that had a heart attack or something.

A couple of minutes after we got to the cafeteria, we watched the second plane hit. It was surreal, just didn't make sense at the time.

I don't remember why I wasn't in bed that night, here in Melbourne, Australia. I do remember turning on the TV to a report that a plane had crashed into one of the towers. My wife and I thought it must have been a light plane. We watched the news unfold, live, that night, and I remember the shock we felt when the first tower collapsed. I went to work the next day and found a team also in shock - not to mention those who had friends or family who they knew worked there. Excellent post, Marsden. Many mistakes were made leading up to, and since that event. I hope that those of you who lost loved ones can know that we're thinking of you. Do you find this valuable?
