I give up.
Sep 24 2011, 12:30 PM EDT
After all the time I've spent trying to find a different rifle than what everyone has...I'm going to try building an AR-15. I say build because it would be an easier concept to sell to my parents. With Christmas and my birthday coming up, it would be better than another year of "Idunno what I want." And that way no one person has to spend $800 dollars or more on a complete rifle. But I honestly need help picking out parts. And my criteria are fairly simple: I don't want bottom of the barrel, but I would like a simple A2 look with no super tactical special forces-grade frills. The barrel must feature no threading, or I have to pay a gunsmith to permanently pin a muzzle brake on to comply with NJ laws. It also must feature no bayonet lug. And, to feed the inner hipster in me, I would like a defining feature that IMO is pretty damn good-looking, not to mention reminiscent of a certain retro-futuristic post-nuclear RPG. http://www.everydaynodaysoff.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/wood_AR-15.png I'll be talking to my mother about it while we're going to buy a Remington 870 today. I'm looking at you, Timber. Do you find this valuable? |

And apparently someone up there likes me, because a rebate from Dicks Sporting Goods just came in the mail, offering $50 off a $250 or more purchase. I'm supposed to leave in an hour or less to get the 870.

Rock River Arms has some pretty darn good looking wood furniture at reasonable prices.Hitting up your local gun shop is your first stop. See what they keep on hand as far as stripped lowers. Once you've finished the paperwork on that one gun part everything else can be ordered on-line. First thing you'll need is a lower parts kit. Good places to look? Midway USA and Brownells. Another good one? Palmetto State Armory. Ditch the cheap plastic grip that comes with the kit. You'll be buying a wooden one anyway. Next thing you'll need? Buffer tube, a buffer tube end plate, a buffer tube lock ring, a buffer spring and of course a buffer. Be sure to order these parts for a A1/A2 stock. Carbine parts are different. I'd purchase the upper completed. That way you won't have to have your rifle headspaced by a gunsmith. As far as your issues with the threading and the bayonet lug I have to admit I haven't looked for parts with those features. I think there are manufacturers who offer front sights without the bayonet lugs. I'd look at Bushmaster for a barrel without threading or look into CMMG for a barrel with a permanantly attached flash hider. I feel for ya having to jump through hoops to get what you want. Changing out the plastic handguards for wooden ones is fairly easy. Don't bother with buying a handguard tool. A set of channel locks, a screwdriver and some patience will do the trick. There's a video on youtube showing you how. A set of punches, a vise and a brass hammer would be some good tools to have. A vise block is also handy. Use the youtube videos that Midwayusa has out there to help you complete your project. Trust me WB you're going to love doing it yourself and that wooden furniture is going to have me wanting one just like it. Do you find this valuable? |

"Hitting up your local gun shop is your first stop. See what they keep on hand as far as stripped lowers. And I don't think he stocks lowers, so I would probably have to order one through him anywho. You have any recommendations? And I've been looking at Rock River Arms for some parts, but I think I'll go with this place for furniture. Even though the price difference is big, I just like the look of them better. I specifically like the full-length A1 handguard. http://ironwooddesigns.com/IWDsite/IWDHome.html Do you find this valuable? |

I like the look of those wood parts better than what RRA offers to be honest and I'm a RRA fanboy. Really excited for you WB. Do you find this valuable? |

"Once you get over the first hurdle it'll be smooth sailing from there. If I throw a rock around here I hit a gun shop.Well, the second hurdle would be finding a barrel that I like/won't put me in maximum security. Apparently trying to find a 20" HBAR crowned barrel is like asking for Raptor Jesus to personally hand you Jupiter. I might just have to ask my gunsmith to have a muzzle brake pinned. Do you find this valuable? |

I might go with that. Do you find this valuable? |

Shameless triple post. Are there any good retro-ish carry handle scopes, or am I just asking for a chrome turd? Also, Dicks couldn't do the transfer for the 870 yesterday, and they can't do it today either, both the fault of police station hours. I looked at the Mossberg 500 as well, but I just liked how the 870 felt a lot better, despite the slightly awkward pump release. Do you find this valuable? |

What's the deal with the welded / pinned muzzle brakes anyway? What makes a flash hider more "evil" than a muzzle brake? BASTARDS and your strange arbitrary laws! California has the same stupid law. Apparently high temp silver solder satisfies the legal requirements as well, but doesn't mess up the barrel like welding will. And if SHTF, a propane torch to melt the solder and a pair of pliers and you can take off the brake. Do you find this valuable? |
