Winter is here, what will you change in your BOB.

I added some items to my BOB today to deal with the winter weather.

This is what I added:

2 1# propane tanks - fuel for stove burner, will last 4-5 hours of use.
Screw on propane stove burner - burner, for cooking and heat.
6 hand warmers - warmth without a fire. and can be used to melt ice or cook.
Thermal socks - to keep my feet warm
Insulated gloves - to keep my hands warm
Knit hat with face mask - to keep my head and face warm

I am interested if any one else is changing up their gear for the season change. Also any suggestions that don't cost a lot.

I've added a couple of things I already had with me but were not in my bag.

-Neck gator
-Beanie
-Warm gloves
-Ninja suit

There are more things I need to add, but those are in a storage unit a few states away.

If I had to leave my home, I don't have a specific destination in mind. Any homes of friends or family I would go to are all within15 miles.

However, I would prepare for winter even if I left in the summer.

My little tent, sleeping bag, heavy duty coat, scarf and light blanket would be enough to keep me warm if I had to - for some reason- sleep outside and couldnt light a fire.

Although maybe if I did leave in the winter I'd consider take my lilttle butane camping stove with an extra refill.

We got light flurries of white crap last night/this morning. I have a full compliment of stuff you need here because it cold(like freezing to death human popsicle cold).

Hand warmers are a good idea for the weight JunkCollector. I make sure I have good easy light kindling in a waterproof continer. Extra heavy socks, gloves, and cover. Merino wool is good.

Instead of packing stuff in my BOB I'll just use the stuff in my M95 jacket I wear when the weather gets cold. I have some winter gloves, a cold weather hat, ect. in it already.
We've got firewood out the wazoo at my BOL and a chimney.

Higher calorie food, jumping from around 2500 cal to 3500-4000 cal for winter. You need more calories to stay warm in the winter.
Probably go to heavier socks ( wool instead of cotton)
and adding some longjohns.

Resprayed weather sealant (water proofing) onto my jackets, gloves, bags and tarps.

Time to put the insulated covers back onto the canteens and add some more stew bouillon cubes into the supplemental rations. Considering getting a heavier sleeping system although it doesn't get all that cold and the added weight/bulk probably wouldn't be worth it. Also added some more wetfire tinder given that it is going to rain for the next several months.

Just some warmer winter clothes; I live in Florida, so one rarely needs anything beyond a hoodie, jeans, and maybe knit gloves to survive. Do you find this valuable?

I have added lip balm today.

I will probably re-strap my -20 degree sleeping bag under my pack tomorrow, I want to wash it first.

It would be easier where it's warm in the winter, but some of us really have to worry with winter weather getting down to 0 degrees or under.

I think that the ideal bug out bag should be ready for any conditions. Not that winterizing is a bad idea, but for me a BOB is what you carry most of your stuff in in your car in case you run out of gas, which you eventually will.
The thing is, one gun, two maximum, as much ammo as logically possible (depends on the caliber), 1-4 extra magazines (if your guns uses detachable magazines), a couple knives if possible or a hammer, maximum possible water, and a reasonable amout of food, and two changes of clothes for different weather will make the ideal BOB. It sounds like a lot, but if you play your cards right and have the proper strength, it won't be that bad.

Here in the UK we have 4 seasons a day, never mind a year. So the gear I have is what I will be taking.

Besides, even if it is summer when the zeds rise, there's no reason to leave your artic sleeping bag and warm kit at home. Just because the dead rise doesn't mean the seans stop changing.

If in doubt ask the Germans what happened when they marched into Russia in their summer uniform and left their great coats at home..... ;)

A more important question could be what extra precautions would you take i.e. weapon maintainence (extra oil, watch out for rust etc), how to treat cold injuries and how to avoid them i.e. frostbite etc.

It is not so much a change in items as it is a change in use. The towel becomes coat filler, the tarp is wrapped directly around the bedroll for warmth rather than hung above, etc. Do you find this valuable?

Agreed

Mine is packed for winter year round. Sure it is heavy, but I can ditch what I do not need in spring and have time to scroung stuff up later if I need it by winter.

Besides, my winter whites take up little room and weigh next to nothing...

Yeah, I keep snowshoes next to the BOB... and yeah.. it drives the wife nuts..

Just curious, but what are your tarps made of if water proofing them is neccesary?

All the ones i have are plastic and only leak if there is a hole in them, which are both caused and fixed by duct tape

I've never used spray weather sealant, only been told about it. I wonder if you could indulge my curiosity.
Is it like wax? Does it dry well, or leave residue on anything that rubs against it? Any other pros/cons?

I considered buying some for my tent, as I'm sure my tent wouldn't stand up to terrential rain very well.

If your using a solid sheet of plastic, then you shouldn't have to worry about weatherproofing it. Tents however are made up of canvas, usually some sort of nylon or other plastic based fiber weave. Water can work it's way through the spaces in the weave and eventually drip.

Waterproofing sprays or paints that I have seen are either a silicone or wax type.

I waterproofed my jungle hammock with a wax type only cause I have not been impressed with silicone ones in the past. It really is a new experience for me to try it out.

It does leave an unusual smell, that reminds me of how everything smelt like in the Army tho. I also found it tended to "lighten" the colour somewhat and did leave white residue on the surface threads. This could be wiped down and mostly removed with a simple rag. If you handle it, your hands will feel kinda waxy and smell like what you used it on.

The stuff I used varied between 12 hr dry time for spray, and 24 hr for the paint on. I would double it tho.

A note tho, appearently your not susposed to mix the two (wax and/or silicone). Either use one or the other, and once you use one type, stick to that type again.

Perhaps other members can add their input here. I really do not know much more about it than this.

They are already water proof just have lots of tiny holes from being used as a ground cover. The water sealant is silicon based and will fill in these small holes. Putting a tent on top of your tarp several times a summer tends to damage it.
