Sure its possible. Doesn't mean they work for sh!t. Of course, I could be wrong, I've never used a drum mag.

It would be easier and cheaper to get the drum mag for the SKS. If you really need that much instant firepower and the ability to exchange mags then just invest in a AK and have the real deal.I can see having a drum on a semi-sniper/marksman with a scope. So he can have lots of ready ammo. Then when empty move to a new location, reload and then do it again. But they do sell SKS drums. The SKS conversion to accept AK mags isnt easy and not cheap. So the AK would be the way to go if changeable mags is your idea. If not then a SKS drum can be easily installed. One problem they are heavy and noisy as hell with all those rounds banging around. Sounds like a elf marching band in over drive. lol 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

I just don't see why on earth an AK is better than an SKS...I get you points, and I'm not saying the drum is a good idea, but I think the SKS is not necessarily a sniper gun. Sure, it's made for precise aim, but that doesn't mean low capacity goes with it. I find it an ideal zombie gun either on the run or in a base. Do you find this valuable? |

"I just don't see why on earth an AK is better than an SKS..."Are you kidding me? The Soviet military dumped the SKS after only a few short years of service in favor of the AK for a reason. Nearly every communist country on the planet used Aks, while crates of SKS rifles sat in reserve. Are you suggesting they all made an incredible mistake and had they stuck with the SKS we would be speaking Russian now? Do you find this valuable? |

When both the AK and the SKS are semi auto it's advantage narrows and when the SKS is made so it can take AK mags I think the two are very close or the SKS is even the better weapon. SKS were and are still used in many parts of the world and were issued long after AKs came out Drum mags were never intended to be used with regular AKs but instead were for the RPK light machine Gun 2 out of 2 found this valuable. The SKS is a great weapon system. But the drum has its own issues. If you realy want the SKS then go with one 20rd mag. Most SKS ammo pouches hold two 10rd stripper clips per pocket. Thus a full mag reload is the same as one pocket. Then you can carry more ammo for the same weight compared to mags. The 20rd mag doubles the ammo reserve without adding to much weight and doesnt protrude below the weapon enough to make prone shooting difficult, like the 30rd mag oe drum. Plus the 20rd mag is as reliable as the 10rd stock mag. Its my choice and with practice you can reload it almost as fast with stripper clips as by them aukward SKS mags. Just my observation on the matter. My opinion is just my opinion so take it as you want. But good luck with whatever you decide. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Besides, Russia had a capacity problem and a bullet shortage at the time the SKS was in use. So no. I'm not saying that. For the zombie apocalypse, however, the SKS is a much better choice. They've each got their pros and cons, to me it comes down to personal preference and what you want to do with the rifle. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

As a historical note, it's my understanding that the SKS was not "dumped" by the Soviets in favor of the AK. They always meant to replace the SKS, it was meant to fill the gap between their WW2 rifles and their next gen rifle that ended up being the AK.Their SKS insurance policy ended up being a good idea on the Soviets part when they had a little trouble with the initial production of the AK that took a little while to sort out, they had the SKS to fall back on in the meantime. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. The way I see it, they're both pretty equal, both semi auto, both x39 russkie, both reliable, next what you have to look at is what you want to do, if you want an "assault rifle look" go with the AK, if not SKS, do not try and buy an sks and turn it into an AK, go with the AK in the first place. The only exception is for guys like me, cannot own an AK, but an SKS is fine and dandy, I wanted a tacticool look to mine, so I bought a T6 intrafuse stock, I also plan to get an intrafuse mag or two, make it a "country-with-******-gun-law AK. (Its funny, at the range last time I took it out there was this kid who said "look an AK" I just laughed to myself) look at exactly what you want, and go from there

The SKS is not designed to be used with detachable mags. It was designed to be used with stripper clips. If you choose to pull out the fixed mags and use detachable mags, be prepared for potential clumsiness. The worst part in my opinion is trying to hold the bolt open when the mag is out. You have to reach into the action with one hand while you hold the bolt back with the other. Its not really hard, but its clumsy. A fixed mag SKS would be more reliable, and loading with stripper clips isn't that much slower, so I'm leaving my current SKS stock. But since I would prefer more rounds and detachable mags, I'm seeking an AK in the future for my SHTF rifle. Do you find this valuable? |

The SKS has a much better and easier/ faster to use safety I don't think anybody could dispute this. Easy to put on and off with out changing your grip on the stock. No loud clack like most AKsYeaah I know some [Expensive] AKs have retrofitted side safetys that are supposed to take care of this problem. My personal experance with one wasn't all that good, SKSs that I have shot have all been more accurate then AKs I have shot. Standard SKS has a longer sight radius then Standard AK. Triggers in my experance better on a SKS, many AKs have a trigger "slap" when you shoot them. Can lock the bolt back on an SKS and locks back when it is empty, not on most AKs Personal opinon...I think an SKS just feels better and points more natural when you shoot it I think both are about equally dependable. The one advantage the Semi AK has is that it takes detachable Hi Capacity Mags. Realisticaly I'm not sure how much an advantage this is for most people in the real world, When you throw in an SKS that was manufactured to us AK mags I think you would have a hard time coming up with an advantage the AK has 1 out of 1 found this valuable. They always meant to replace the SKS, it was meant to fill the gap between their WW2 rifles and their next gen rifle that ended up being the AK.This is true. The SKS was intended to be their cushion in case the rather radical AK-47 turned out to be a failure. It was only supposed to stay as the main front line rifle if the AK was crap. Both are fine rifles and it's mostly a matter of personal taste as to which one you want. The one advantage I can see an AK having is taking detachable magazines as standard rather than needing the (sometimes spotty) extras that cost you more money on the gun. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Realisticaly I'm not sure how much an advantage this is for most people in the real world, When you throw in an SKS that was manufactured to us AK mags I think you would have a hard time coming up with an advantage the AK has "The AK has a weight advantage and is shorter, Thus it is lighter and handier for a limited BOB for packing. So if weight and size are an issue then the AK is the choice. Most people that havent practiced enough to learn what their AK is capable of. Will try to out shoot its envelope, by engaging targets out of range. And with hi-capacity mags people (even trained) have a tendency to shoot more. The SKS was in developement before the AK, and did see some WWII combat before the AK saw combat. They kept the SKS in production to help equipt the worlds largest army with more modern weapons. Once the AKs stamping issues were fixed and it was in enough numbers the SKS production stopped. Then it was slowly moved from standard issue to reserves then went into emrgency reserve storage. You cant go wrong with either system, but they have different capabilties and thus fill different roles in a Apox. I would personaly like to own both. They both are great weapons and would do the owner great servive. So go with what you want & need. Do you find this valuable? |

So if weight and size are an issue then the AK is the choice.I have a Chinese SKS parotoper carbine...this is the SKs with the 16 inch barrel Just compared it to one of the 3 Chinese semi AKs I own. My SKS is only 1 1/2 inch longer My AK on my postage scale weighs 8 lb 2 oz unloaded but with mag in place My SKS weighs 8 lb. 5 oz I don't think there is enough of a difference between the two to affect anything. To be honest I doubt if anybody could even tell the difference of 3 oz of weight. Actually To me my SKS "feels" lighter because of it's balance 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
