hatchet vs machete vs crowbar

If you could only choose to take one of these, wich would it be?Machete: sharpest and longest blade. The lightest but the most frail. Not much use in urban enviroment. Hatchet: both blunt ant cut. Can cut without using as much force as the machete. Heavier than the machete, but lighter than the crowbar. Does not have a spike, and has a wooden handle. Crowbar: does not requier sharpening. Can be used for opening doors and windows without causing to much damage to them, so you can close them behind you an barricade them. The heaviest, might hurt your wrists to use it/ lose control when swingin it. You may only take one, you do not knot wich terrain you will end up in and is probably the only melee weapon that you will have besides a pocket knife. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Crowbar, I know it's heavier and takes more strength to swing, but it's uses (in my opinion) outweigh the uses of a hatchet or machete. It's stronger, so it takes very little maintenance aside from just wiping the thing clean and making sure it doesn't rust, and you can probably find one at your local hardware store, easy. I also like how it's very good at opening tons of things, and helps when lifting heavier objects by providing some leverage.

I also have to say I would choose the crowbar. Yes, I know you cant chop wood with it but that's why I have a wire saw.

If you would have said that the hatchet has the metal rod with a rubber handle, I'd be all over it. Alas, a wood handled hatchet is extremely sub-par to the other choices. Crowbar it is. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Machete. It's the tool I'm most comfortable with in the woods.

I would pick...all three!I got a hatchet...although I would perfer a good tomahawk over the hatchet. Great tool and doubles as a decent weapon if needed. I got a machete...a gerber gator. I like it. Decent cutting tool and would also double as a wepaon if needed. I got a crow bar as well. Good tool if you need to pry something open. Not really a great wepaon IMO...but hey...I never liked half life either. You always need to have the right tool of the job...and I like to have options. Do you find this valuable? |

I would toss the crowbar in the binthose bent jimmy bars if you look hard at them and think a lot on their design they really don't come up that well If you really want to test them and i am being serious go get a side of a pig and hang it up then use the crowbar 1st and see how it goes make sure you use the hooked part a couple of times then use a machete , sledge hammer and a hatchet The 1st thing you will notice and people call BS but thats ok is the crow bar gives the lowest amount of return for effort as a weapon and if the bent hook digs in its very hard to get it out of the flesh unless you move in and push it back wards not some thing you want against a zed. the amount of damage a crowbar can deliver is directly related to the strength of the user. I think it would be more effective against non zed targets then zeds and prying open doors The machete has a pretty nice return for effort in terms of damage how ever the length of the blade and design can lead to breaking your own wrist if you use it incorrectly you give you biggest swing and the end hits a wall or some thing really hard it will stop at the end but you body weight will keep pushing the handle and that is where you can come unstuck try a gentle swing at some thing with just the tip and put some weight behind it and you will see what i mean. The machete is effective against both zeds and non zeds and it can have an intimidation factor against non zed you get hit by a machete and your in trouble The sledge hammer reigns supreme interms of effort vs reward for damage one well placed blow from a 6 pounder and your target is no longer moving the trauma and crushing injuries a sledge hammer delivers is very powerful. Down side is though you need to practice how to balance yourself so it wont throw you out of balance if you miss your target and well they are kind of heavy The hatchet is a great around and would be my choice its abit of them all 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Hatchet or machete. IMHO crowbars are over rated as weapons and don't make very good survival tools, plus they're bigger and heavier than their competition. The hatchet is my number 1 choice, it's the only one I have in my gear. Do you find this valuable? |

For my neck of the woods I think the hatchet is the best tool. As a weapon, none of the above, I'd use a tomahawk or my pick hammer. I can use a hawk for a ton of jobs as well as being a superb tool for entering doors and stuff. If I had the spare cash or won the lottery I'd love to have the Bench Made Kellion Hawk, which is a metal tomahawk with a crow bar point at the very base of the handle. For my budget I'm probably going to get something like an ATC Hawk though. Do you find this valuable? |
