Well, the SKS has a stronger round and solid soviet era construction. However, the Mini14 shoots the inferior, but infinately more common 5.56/.223 (I'm assumeing you are not thinking of the target model that only shoots 5.56). The Mini is also lighter. As for magsize, I know the mini is a pain, using its own mag-style and capping at 30 unless you are fabricating a DIY upgrade. Still, on a SA mag-cap is less of an issue. The SKS is legal for deer hunting in most areas. The Mini is riduclously overpriced for what it is. Not sure about the SKS pricetag. I know you have some other rifles that fire the 5.56, so that might sway your decision one way or the other (guns on the same round make stockpiling cheaper and easier, however, the more rounds you can shoot, the more option you have when scavaging or trading). I think I would eventually choose the SKS, because I'm likely to own an AR15 at some point (rendering the Mini redundant), but I am less likely to own an AK, and I am of the school of thought that says you should have a gun for every round and rounds for every gun. SKS, I have two. One is stock 1953 Siminov...and the other Siminov was converted to take the removable tapco mags.I pais about 200 bux per rifle and I bought a case (over 1000 rounds) of ammo for another 200 bux. I love the mini 14...I don't have one and even if I did I will probably choose to carry one of the SKS rifles. I love having the ability to rifle butt and bayonet a target. Mini-14, I have one and its fine for what I use it for. With proper bullet it is good for any game I might hunt (including deer).I had an SKS once for a short time. never really used it and unloaded it. Oakspar@ mini target model that only shoots 5.56???? you are aware that the 5.56x45 is only the military designation for the .223 right? the current SS109 loading of the 5.56 is loaded to an overall length that is longer than the commercial .223, but this does not in any way keep you from firing the .223 rem in a rifle that has the nato spec 5.56x45 chamber. Ok not that i could currently own one so i will have to go on past referenceI would go with the SKS why well i owned a Norinco sks modified to take the 30 round mags for many years it was given to me when i turned 15 and it never let me down even with a lot of field use ( rain , mud , dust ,um poor cleaning and very cheap and nasty ammunition) The only time it ever gave me problems was when i bought a sardine can of ammunition i think it held 1200 rounds that ammo was so dirty to this day i am sure it was loaded with black powder after you would empty a mag through it you could get a rag and wipe black soot away from the outside of the gas chamber ports and the smell was really bad like some one just set off a box of matches after every shot and the smoke was just stupid it sucked i think i used about 200 rounds of it then gave it to a mate who need some ammo hey at least i didn't make him pay for it right I didn't really have that much to do with the mini 14 as i didn't like the .223 at the time i didn't trust it to do the job so i cant really say anything to bad about the mini 14 apart from the fact they cost way more then other options at the time and a L1A1 at the time was only a few hundred dollars more to buy Before people jump on me for not liking the .223 at the time you have to remember i was not plinking i was culling feral pest at that stage ( boar , dingos , cattle and horses) plus i could buy 1000 rounds of Norinco 7.62X 39 for $35 to $40 a case and i was getting .7.62 x 51 for $20 per 100 But .223 was $7 a box of 20 Do you find this valuable? |

I've owned both this is my takeMini 14 had better sights and easier to scope Detacable hi cap mag could be an advantage though with the SKS you don't have to worry about damaged or lost mags. SKS is a tougher military rifle while the Mini 14 is more of a sporter rifle that I don't think would hold up to rough usage like an SKS ....Lots of militarys used the SKS while I don't think any used the Mini 14 Anything the 7.62x39 can do I think the 5.56 can do using the proper ammo while the 5.56 is flatter shooting and has a longer effective range then the 7.62 If I had to pick a personal defense rifle for general use such as during civil unrest I'd go with the mini 14 If I was picking a survival end of the world rifle I'd go with the SKS 1 out of 1 found this valuable. "Mini-14, I have one and its fine for what I use it for. With proper bullet it is good for any game I might hunt (including deer). That was a typo - the target Mini 14 only shoots the .223 (the non-military round). That is not all Mini-14s, just one of the makes, but still worth mentioning. All 5.56 guns will shoot .223, but not all .223 guns will take the 5.56. Do you find this valuable? |

Don't get me wrong, I love my SKS (it is my SHTF gun of choice right now), but I would *gladly* trade it for a stainless Mini-14 Ranch Rifle if presented the opportunity. The Ruger has better sights, detachable 20 and 30-round magazines, provisions for mounting a scope, lighter weight, plenty durable (I hear this one come up a lot, as if the AR is tougher or more dependable?) and accurate enough, and it doesn't hurt that it shoots the survivalist rifle chambering of choice - .223 and 5.56.That's my $0.02 on it. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Mini-14 all the way. I don't have any hate for the SKS, but on the other hand I've got about zero love for it. Stripper clips annoy me, and I've said it many times that I dislike and distrust the aftermarket detachable mags for the SKS.The Mini-14 is a great little rifle, mine had a folding stock and was pretty light and easy to handle. Red dot made it a point and shoot gun within 100 or so yards. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I currently own both and would have to answer yes. My opinion on which is better is totally dependent on my mood that day. My Mini is stock and my SKS is not. Should they run out of room in hell and the dead start to walk, I would take the SKS and my wife would take the Mini. This is entirely based on weight an recoil and not because I prefer one or the other. For what the Mini cost, I could have bought 2 SKS's and a case of ammo, but the mini is lighter and handles faster. Federal 62 grain 5.56 is running about $350/1000 while surplus 7.62 is about $325/1260 right now (I've bought it as low as $250, but it seems to be out of stock at those prices). I've never shot Tula ammo before, but it looks like steel cased ammo is running the same price for both rounds. I've seen up to 40 round magazines for both, but I use 20's for both (Ruger factory and Tapco) because I have heard of reliability issues with larger capacity aftermarket mags. Since the stripper clip guides are built into the bolt I can still feed the SKS that way if I choose. They are both accurate enough for where I shoot (100 yards) with the mini probably taking a slight edge, but the SKS will do more damage. Do you find this valuable? |

SKS's are cheap, I can't speak to their reliablity personally, but I know it depends on the country of origin some. Not quite an M1A, but they are heavy.I in general don't like the SKS much and don't think it suceeds well at the assault rifle or tactical carbine roles. If I'm using that caliber it will just be with an AK variant. Do you find this valuable? |

"Which rifle would you choose? Why?"I suppose it had to happen eventually :P Personally, lacking any experience with either, I'd pick the Mini-14 from my experience with the 10/22, which even firing .22lr rounds is a reliable and accurate rifle provided you find what ammo it likes. Chambering 5.56 I imagine the Mini-14 is far less picky, which is the only issue the 10/22 has ever given me personally. Do you find this valuable? |

I too own both in our family collection like some have said I'd go SKS most def for my SHTF gun... that is if i couldnt get to one of my AK's :PBut critcally thinking of the long run I'd have to go with the mini-14 due to the fact that in my area it's easier to stock up on .223/5.56 rounds vs. 7x62. but i digress if it's an option i'd try to keep both haha @unkelrico - I've shot Tulamo in my ak's and sks, i liked em tho kinda dirty. I have fired a Mini 14, and own a SKS, but in my opinion if given a choice for general survival or zombies I would take the Mini 14. The mini 14 is more accurate at longer ranges for hunting, holds more rounds than the normal SKS, the mini is lighter, and the mini uses a far more available round that there will be a possibility to scavenge later. Both are great guns, and in the best case scenario I would easily take both. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
