Suit as weapon?
Oct 17 2011, 5:41 PM EDT
I was thinking that you could have a lightweight bite and stab/slash proof suit, like one made out of leather or something similar, then add pads with knifes. I was thinking you could have a normal sized knife sticking out above your hand and a longer more sword like sticking out by the elbow, running all along the forearm. You are not in risk of cutting yourself, since you are wearing the stab proof gear, and if a zombie were to get up behind you could "easily" take it out with the "elbow sword". You would reach 360 degrees around your body easily! What do you think? And no, this is not to replace your firearm, it's to replace the mele weapon. Instead of carrying one, you just wear one.

Plenty of people have considered protective clothing with or without defensive options. Actually making and having such a suit, however, they do not. Also, would this suit have any use outside of a zombie apoc? If not, why would you lock away your time and money into something that you will likely not use when it could go into something more useful. Now, if you were using the clothes already, like a leather biking suit, then having them makes sense. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

If anything, I'd attempt to enhance your hand to hand abilities with the armor. Elbow pads = safer elbow strikes. That sorta thing. Besides... I'd rather not dissect every chair I sat down in.

More seriously, this is a complex solution to a non-existent problem. The resources you put into developing a suit that would allow for you to safely attach blades to a stab-proof bodysuit that won't accidentally snap off when you slash a target PLUS all the training needed to learn how to effectively fight in this suit could all be put into just learning how to use the sword normally. Not to mention that if you've got a stab-proof suit effective enough to protect you from cutting yourself, why the hell do you need to attach blades on it? You're already going to have a much easier time fighting in melee combat than the rest of us. Do you find this valuable? |

Well, right now it has no use, and would be about as useful as an old sword hanging on the wall, and people have those, so I guess it would just be decorative right now :P

Imagine you are trapped inside a building with several strangers. You just barricaded the doors, and a horde of zombies is right outside. You're in a panic and don't know what to do.Suddenly, a young guy in a black leather body suit with kitchen knives duct taped to his forearms and sports pads on all his joints runs around the corner and pulls a ninja sword from a scabbard on his back. He starts ranting about how this situation is just like he planned for and how he's going to fight his way through the zombies without being bitten thanks to his homemade zombie-suit. Then a man in a suit and tie walks in and quickly, rationally sums up the situation. As he removes his jacket and rolls up his sleeves, he explains in concise, common sense terms how everyone can work together to better secure the building, treat the wounded, and survive this f*cked up day as a group. He says it will be tough, but he knows we can do it. Which one would you put your trust in? Convincing others to follow your lead is a force multiplier that pays better dividends than any weapon (or weapon suit), and in a SHTF your best protection in terms of clothing is your power suit. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. This made me think of two things. The first is how I want to raid a store for a blue pinstriped suit, white shirt, red tie and black leather gloves so I can **** up zombies agent 47style. and the second was the tv series "the cape" Like I literally thought you meant using a suit as a weapon. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. "I never said that this suit would get you out of a horde attacking you :/ :P I meant that it would let you carry stuff and still be able to fight of zombies, like if you were raiding a store :P"one possible issue, Your running from zombies, it's dark, the ground is uneven. You trip. Your friend is with you luckily. He's see's you fall and grabs your arm. You thank him and they watch in horror as the gaping slash in his arm drips hot fresh blood into the cold air. Every zombie just shuffled that much faster. The point is having knifes attached to your body would be a hinderence rather than a benefit. every open wound in zombie land is a real issue. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

The thing about melee solutions is they have all been done, somewhere, at sometime. People have been ninja-ing one another for tens of thousands of years and barring technological advances (usually in materials) anything that you cannot find a historical example of, has probably been proved unworkable at some point in our long and bloody history of enthusiastic mayhem. The closest thing I can recall to your idea is some of the spiky gear some gladiators wore, professional, highly trained, specialist melee fighters. . . If you think you are beyond their level, go for it. _ 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

"anything that you cannot find a historical example of, has probably been proved unworkable at some point in our long and bloody history of enthusiastic mayhem.""...our long and bloody history of enthusiastic mayhem." I like that one. The only way I can see this idea being useful, or even safe for that matter, would be if all the blades were either retractable, and I just don't see that happening in this case.
