In the Market...(Part II?)
Nov 1 2011, 5:33 PM EDT | Post edited: Nov 1 2011, 5:33 PM EDT
I made a thread a while back about me needing a new gun, and I still do. You see, I'm on a budget, and I need a gun to stockpile ammunition and possibly add some accessories to.
I settled on a Maverick 88, but I haven't actually bought one yet, and I'm worried about the price of shotgun shells.
I also love the SKS, but I don't know about the bullets, and I think to get the proper model that I prefer as well as magazines and my first few boxes of 7.62 and everything could get up to $800 when it's all said and done
The .22 is a cheap gun with cheap ammuntion, fun and easy to use, but it's quite underpowered.
I don't know quite what to get...any other ideas? Suggestions on these three?
Once again I'm asking my fellow survivalists for advice.
Do you find this valuable?

i've seen many used mossberg 500's that are in good shape for cheaper than a new maverick (which is made by mossberg) so why go with a maverick?

and where do you get 800 dollars as the cost of a SKS? a breakdown of what you plan to spend it on would be nice.

a gun in .22lr is a plinker, small game getter and a desparity gun, not much else

Well, I hear the banana magazines are unreliable, and I don't like low-capacity, so I'd buy an SKS-D, which takes AK magazines. A Norinco SKS-D with Monte Carlo stock is about 500 used, I think but could easily be more depending on where I buy it. I'll go ahead and over-estimate to about $550. Now say I want four magaizines, that adds what, about another $20 if you estimate cheap, and then the rounds can be bought in bulk (1,000, not that I want that many at a time at all) for about $200.
. . .

Between a Maverick 88 and a used, slightly dated Remington 870 or Mossberg 500, I think the choice is pretty obvious. Old 870s and 500s are damn good guns, IMO much better guns too.

SKSs can be had for under $400 in most places in great condition. Even with cleaning supplies and some ammo, I can't see your price breaking $600 - and that's a ton of ammo.

The .22 is just something you should have, no matter what else you get later. Cheap, fun to shoot and easy to stockpile.

EDIT: If you want a mag fed, why not look into, say an SU-16?

I think I'll look for a Ruger 10/22 for high capacity, target practice, and cheap stockpiling. How much would it cost to put a decent scope on it? Do you find this valuable?

An AK under $500 probably isn't that great. And SKS rifles tend to be pretty accurate, so I can understand why one would look for one that can take mags.

I'm thinking of getting a Marlin 60. They are cheap, reliable .22 semi-automatics. About $80 new, the way I hear it.
I already have a list of Marlin retailers in SC; I'm just waiting for some more advice on it.

Marlins are nice, but I like being able to change mags. Just my mall ninja side speaking :P
