$20 - 72 Hour Survival Kit Challenge
Nov 5 2011, 4:48 PM EDT | Post edited: Nov 6 2011, 4:10 PM EST
Your challenge if you choose to accept it; to go to what ever store you want to, and price or buy (your choice) the supplies to build the best 72 hour survival kit you can with a $20 limit.

The store is your choice, but let us know the store and or what type of store it is.

I went to the Dollar Tree - dollar store this morning to make mine, that includes:

$0.50 Large cloth shopping bag (durable to carry gear)
$1.00 6 - 16.9 liter bottles of water (water and refillable)
$1.00 6 Roman Noodles (food for 3 days)
$2.00 2 cans of treat (like spam protein)
$1.00 small stainless steel pan (cooking or boiling water
$1.00 2 pack of spoons
$1.00 small first aid kit (3 band aids, 2 packs of 2 ibuprofen, 2 antibiotic gel packs, small plastic bag)
$1.00 small bottle of iodine (water purification or injuries)
$1.00 rubber flash light with 3 AAA batteries
$1.00 8 pack AAA batteries (flash light and/or radio)
$1.00 box of 10 large trash bags (shelter, rain poncho, carry stuff)
$1.00 5X7 blue tarp (shelter, carry stuff)
$1.00 travel cleanliness kit (plastic bag with small bar of soap, shampoo, tooth brush, tooth past, mouthwash, and comb)
$ 1.00 emergency blanket
$1.00 large kitchen knife
$1.00 50 feet of rope
$1.00 2 boxes of 250 wood matches
$1.00 15 tea candles
$1.00 1 box of quart size zip-lock bags (keep stuff dry, water, organization)
$1.00 am/fm radio with ear buds with 1 AAA battery
$0.50 small bag of hard candy (for my sweet tooth)

This cost me $ 20.00 without sales tax.

This is what I came up with at the Dollar Tree today, I will go to other stores and make more later, but in the mean time what can you do?

THE CHALLENGE IS ON!

While I'm not able to go to the store and make a list quite yet, this is definitely a great thread. Too many people (especially younger teenagers dependent on their parents) find making a BOB too expensive and try to simply rely on whatever they have lying around. This shows just how easy it is to make an entire 72 hour survival kit for the cost of a few days of food. Do you find this valuable?

I just ran down to the local gas station for a Sunday paper and some lottery tickets, so I thought I would take in my pad of paper and see what I could do.

Lucky's Convenience Store (standard small town gas and convenience store).
Lucky's prices are kind of high, so I didn't get much for my three days but here it is:

$0.00 2 double layered plastic grocery bag (4 in total), for carrying stuff
$3.00 2 - 1 liter bottles of water
$2.46 11/2 liters of bleach (for water purification)
$4.38 6 Roman noodle (off brand)
$2.49 6 pack box of Nutri Grain bars (off brand)
$2.99 small car first aid kit (4 band aids, 2 antibiotic gel, 1 large Gauss, small (5 feet) medical tape, and instruction in a sealed plastic bag.
$0.99 small retractable razor knife
$1.09 box with 3 large trash bags (black)
$0.99 25 feet of jute twine
$1.49 2 pack disposable lighters (cheap clear style)

Total $19.88 without tax.
The card board from the packaging would be used for fire tinder and T.P.

@ Uzzgub - Use 20 of your local currency or the equivalent of 20 U.S.Dollars, which ever is largest.

@ John - Not everyone will buy wholesale, but if you want to sure.

I went to ALDI grocery store today, I have to say other than cheap non-brand name food it sucks for a survival situation.

This is the best I did there:

$3.18 2 boxes of 8 (16 total) granola bars
$4.14 6 32 oz. Gator Aid knock off drink
$8.99 twin size blanket
$1.39 box of 15 quart zip lock bags
$0.00 1/2 roll of T.P. (from bathroom)
$0.10 heavy plastic bag (to carry pitiful supplies in)
Total $ 17.80

This store location doesn't carry batteries, hardware, or lighters to use for fire or light.

I went to the flea market because its the last day that its open until April. So I decided why not see what I could do with $20, of course most of the normal dealers were already packed up and not there.

I bought:

$2.00 Used "cheap" machete with sheath
$4.00 3 12oz bags of beef jerky
$2.00 Small used back pack
$2.00 Wind up flash light (3 led)
$3.00 Used military style canteen with metal stainless cup and cover
$1.00 6 pack of disposable lighters (cheap clear type)
$2.00 8X8 foot tarp
$1.00 100 feet nylon 1/4inch rope
$3.00 Used 38 inch crow bar

That's all I came up with. I am glad I went I wanted another canteen and I didn't have a stainless canteen cup, just an aluminum one. I all so bought 48 packs of the jerky (2 cases), I like me some jerky to snack on.

. . . I know it's a bit late, but I have to say this.

Your £12.47 is the SAME as our $20. You don't get "only" that amount of money. It's the same d@mn thing. If you go with £20 then you get more value than us.

food costs over here is higher as are most things so still comparability think the idea is a reasonable cheep bob for 3 days £20 is about 3 days food and drink cost in real life (yes you can cook for 4 days for a fiver if you make stew).

Here in Toronto you're lucky if $20 gets you two packs of malboros. That's why I get the real el-cheapo Pall Malls that taste like garbage but help me cut down on smoking - for that reason.

2.65 + 2.65 - 2 454 g bags of white long grain rice - food for 4 days
.99 - curry powder; adds flavor to the bland-tasting rice.
.35x6 - Ramein noodles.
4.39 - mini first aid kit. (bandaids, antibiotic cream; the soft stuff).
2.36 - instant coffee - 6 packets.
99c - 4 liters of water. On sale :)
.99c - lip balm (I get chapped).
.99c - 4 books of matches.
.99c - small pairing sort of knife.
.99c - Tylenol, travel tube - 10 pills.

Did my shopping at Shoppers Drug Mart - total comes right up to $20.09 not including tax - BUT I have a Shoppers Optimum Card; so it'll turn out to be like; $19.85 without taxes. And... If I use my points then even better. Which reminds me I've got nothing to carry my stuff in... Did you know it costs .5 cents for plastic bags here? Like what is this; really??

$20 doesnt go very far. Even so, it is rather cool to see what folks are getting. There are some pretty savvy buys going on. No one "has it all" but dang we are doing OK. Do you find this valuable?
