On Grammar
Nov 6 2011, 9:21 AM EST
I'd just like to point out that the majority of people on the internet use "your" for "you're" and vice versa, and it's really starting to annoy. Also, it's better to learn grammar and turn your grammar check off on microsoft word, because it will often advise you incorrectly. Also, if you're wondering why it matters (which was addressed in the page to a satisfactory degree, I think), it's because people won't listen to your actual point if they beleive you to be less intelegent. It makes reading and understanding difficult as well as making you look steroetypical. This page is very informative and well done. I congratulate its author. Also, "its" means belonging to "it," while "it's" is a contraction meaning "it is." Just my notes on the subject. Do you find this valuable? |

"Also, it's better to learn grammar and turn your grammar check off on microsoft word, because it will often advise you incorrectly.May I suggest that that statement is relative to the abilities (or absence thereof) of a writer. It’s been 4 to 5 months since ‘lost’ the broadband connection I’ve had time to consider the changes it made to my state of mind. I spent a whole lot of time in forums debating with people who were probably smarter and almost certainly better educated than I. I found this profoundly satisfying because with broadband my spelling is flawless (though American) And all the facts and figures in the world are an open book at my fingertips; as it happens they are an open browser tab because my Mozilla Firefox bookmarks are catalogued into sections. So misquoting Monty Python; “a series of logical propositions or statements with the purpose of discovering at the truth” from the ‘I-came-here-for-an-argument’ sketch illustrates a point. I’m misquoting here it because I no longer have the power to go to www.http.wiki/montypython/scripts (or whatever-the-hell it is) and look it up. That loss of the power to look stuff up has effectively left me feeling like a tongue-tied, illiterate, amnesiac and as a kind of technological-stroke victim groping around in the bare, candle-lit monk’s cell of my mind I’m left contemplating the nature of the vast, sunny, university library from which I’ve been excluded. Membership of that library and possession of the abilities that the internet bestows on anyone willing to embrace it, has with its loss, come to seem as blessed and as potent as the gift of tongues received by Christ's apostles. So one lesson to be learned is that while we are taught that God’s mercy may be infinite, capitalism’s largess is considerably less so therefore; ‘Beware of Geeks bearing gifts’ _ Do you find this valuable? |

Not to be hyper-critical, but OP, you misspelled "intelligent" in a thread devoted to grammar. I also find it a bit interesting that out of all the "lol" and "g2g" and any other cyber-induced spelling and grammatical brain lapses, the misuse of contractions is what most offends you. But I agree with your basic premise.

Commas are important also, a comma can mean the difference between:Helping your Uncle Jack, off a horse. or Helping you uncle jack off a horse. just sayin'. 6 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you? |

All joking aside though, most new members see "zombie survival site" and don't think they need to put any thought into anything they put up because... well it's zombies. After we tell them, they usually put it together a bit. As long as I can make out the thought on the thread, I try not to be too critical, myself. People don't even speak right, hard to expect them to construct a paragraph, or spell any of it correctly. Plus this is the age of "text speak" (god help us). I guess we should be happy when we don't have to read "thngs lyk ths" all day. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

I myself am guilty of the "lol" BS, but that's more a tool than a way of speaking. If I'm just harassing someone, or being a smart ass, you can't see my face over the post, so it's meant to illustrate that I'm not being serious. I never do the whole "I h8 txt tlk" garbage as a means of communication though.they try to justify it by saying "well you only get a limited number of characters" I call bull sh!t because after doing it for so long, I doubt they have enough real words left in their vocabulary to use up the character limit. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. You know, as far as grammar goes... it's all a matter of personal effort. I won't say getting into staff a few years ago was done by being sloppy and disrespectful :P

So long asWhen people jump on to the grammar bus, and slam people for the lack of correct grammar they take into count one very important detail English is not the first written or spoken language for every single person on this plant or the internet it may not even be the second. There are people who participate in on-line forums such as this because they have an interest in zombies/survival and also use it for a place to practice their English writing skills in a public forum So before people jump on another member for poor grammar it may pay to find out where they are from before going in all guns blazing I work with a new arrival and he is trying very hard to grasp the use of computers and learn English as his new language so far he has done well but part of his computer course was to join a public forum and make a post. Well now i really felt sorry for him the outright harshness of the other members was cruel and it really did put him off and slow his learning down I am not excusing lazy people who know better i am just saying don't slam people without finding out first if they tried and did their best or just lazy 1 out of 1 found this valuable.
