Help me decide what to waste my money on next.

Bonjour, everybody. I'm here with another irrelevant thread, though I actually have a bit of a dilemma this time.

Here's the deal. Not too long from now, I might be able to sell a 4-wheeler that I got for my birthday a while back. My family never really uses it, and we've got a friend that's interested in buying it.
Point is, we should be able to get around $1700 for it. And, with this newfound cash, I'm probably going to buy a new handgun.

Question is, which one?
I've had a few ideas bouncing around in my head for a while. So, I'm interested as to which you would go with, as well as any other ideas for handguns you have.

My ideas so far are:
S&W Model 29 8 3/8" .44 magnum
S&W Model 13 3" .357
Colt Detective Special .38
Colt Lawman 2" .357
Ruger Blackhawk 9mm/.357 convertible.
Sig P226 9mm

As y'all can see, I'm leaning towards another revolver. What do y'all think about each, and is there anything else you can suggest?

I've got a p226 on layaway right now (need to get home!) and can't wait. I love those guns. I've had one before and can''t say enough good things about them.

Future purchase for me on the handgun side is a S&W 686. Have you looked at those?

Those are nice .357s. Solid as a rock, you shouldn't be disappointed.

Personally, I'm partial to .44s, so I'd say go with the S&W 29. Just my opinion.

Good to know about the Sig.

And I've got two problems with the 686. First, it's stainless steel-finished, which I'm not a huge fan of. Second, I've already got a 586, which is the same gun, just with a blued finish.

What's not to like about that hunk of stainless steel goodness?

I've got a stainless Taurus revolver that I've owned for 21 years that looks the exact same as it did when I pulled it out of the box. No rubbed off blueing no fighting corrosion all the time.

We're opposites there, I love stainless steel handguns and rifles.

Living in the Ohio Valley with all the heat and humidity in the summer has made me a fan.

Meh, stainless just seems a bit flashy for me. Nothin' wrong with it; blued just screams "classic".

I'd go with one of the snubbies, I think it would go well with your larger 586.

8+ inch barrel on that Model 29? I think the 6 inch barrel on my dads Model 28 is too long! Plus .44 Mag is expensive to shoot.

If I can't talk you into a FiveseveN then absolutely without a doubt the Sig P226.

Here is the review I did of mine:
http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/page/Sig+P226+Review+and+Operation

I think semi-automatics are the absolute only way to go. Get the Mec-Gar 18 round magazines that are flush with the grip and you will never have a failure with that pistol. That one magazine is essentially saving two reloads to empty compared to a 6 shooter. I just cannot see one single advantage of a 6 shooter, and nobody can say they are more reliable because good high quality semi-automatics just do not jam.

Well, on the .44, I'm thinking that the longer barrel would make it a lot easier to shoot. And yeah, the cost would be a problem, but I'd still have plenty of money left over.

@Possum: I understand what you're saying, and I think that the P226 is a great gun. However, the advantage of a 6 shooter, for me, is that I shoot better with it. I'm more comfortable with them, and they just feel better in my hand. Also, if it matters, I do already have a DA/SA 9mm.

"good high quality semi-automatics just do not jam."
I'd say that's a bit of an overstatement. But yeah, modern autoloaders are so reliable that it takes a lot of wind out of the sails of the revolver reliability argument.

As much as I think semi-automatics trump revolvers in most areas, I think revolvers still have some niches where they can compete, or even beat semi-automatics.

Can a guy buy a revolver just because he wants one?

I'd say a revolver was more accurate but that theory got blown to hell when my brother-in-law bought a five-seven. He's a really good shot with a pistol to begin with and when we shoot now its no contest. I have to get ribbed on a regular basis. He can do some crazy trick-shooting with that handgun.

Not to try and persuade you from a handgun, but you could probably get a pretty slick fighting rifle with some money to spare if you budgeted that right.
If you go with one of those for just the cool factor I'd get the 29. For practical stuff I'd get the 226 or the Blackhawk.
Seriously though, if you could find one in your area you could get an AK for around $500, maybe more or maybe less. The rest could go to ammo and other goodies lol. Heck you could get a pretty nice AR and still have the cash to spare.

Interesting points Danny, I'll have to think about that. Also, I'm considering a .357 lever-action; sure, it may not be an assault rifle, but it's handy and matches ammo with one of my handguns. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I'm with ODB. How you set for rifles? You could build a wicked AR for that kind of money. Do you find this valuable?

Well, for rifles, got a Winchester 94, Remington 700, Rossi single-shot .22, and a Stevens Model 200 .308. In addition, my dad has around 15 rifles, mainly boltguns and rimfires. Don't have an AR or AK, and I'll probably look into 'em.

My dads thinking about selling his (Unfired) .45 Colt Win '94, he damn well sell it to me, then I will get a .45 Blackhawk or Vaquero from Ruger, if he doesn't (Which will piss me off to no end (which I was when he sold the Python and the RCMP commemorative '94, although he sold the '94 to a guy who's son was an RCMP officer) I will get a .357 Blackhawk or Vaquero and a Marlin 1894 Cowboy in .357.

Which would you rather Jim, rifle or handgun? Go with what you would use more

hey Jim i have a marlin lever action in .357 and a ruger blackhawk in .357/9mm and you can guess why
Same ammo for rifle and pistol makes life easy if you are trying to work out how much ammo for each to carry. its not hard to carry 5 boxes .357 or 38 special ammo in your pack and for me if it really came down to it and i was on the move i would grab those 2 to take with me simply because i don't plan on being a raider but i still want to defend myself and well i would rather have 250 rounds i can use in my rifle and pistol then a mix up of different calibers if i can help it

i also have a ruger single six 22/22mag and rifles for both for the same reason

sure the single action is pretty slow to reload and fire compared to say my M&P but there is always a trade off

Any way good luck with finding something you like but don't follow the pack follow what your brain tells you its your money and your weapon at the end of the day so enjoy

I think a good course of action would be to invest in two good rifles. With 1700 dollars you could get a marlin .357 lever gun for 500 or so and you could spend the other 1200 on decent ak 400-500. That would leave you 700-800 dollars to outfit your ak as you see fit with plenty of extra mags and a few thousand rounds of 7.62x39. Do you find this valuable?

By all means, yes. I just wanted to give the Sig some support since it was on the list. I am a huge fan of anything made by Sig or FN as you guys are all aware :)
