Chainmail, worth the weight or a useless back breaker?
Nov 8 2011, 6:39 PM EST
Personally, i have always had an interest in medieval armor and weapons, so when faced with the question "would you wear your chainmail during a zombie invasion?" I always feel conflicted.I remember reading somewhere (not sure what page) in the Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, That wearing a shark suite may protect you from a zombie bites, scratches etc , and well seeing as chainmail is fairly similar to the thin wire mesh of a shark suite, my first thought was, that i would most definitely wear it, or at the very least, i think i would cut it down and mount it to items of clothing around areas where i would most likely be bit. But after weighing the chainmail and wearing the full suit around for a few hours i began to think differently. The full suits weight is 25.6 pounds and begins to really hurt the shoulders after a few hours of use. I could maybe see myself throwing it on if i was over run, but as far as bugging out or for traveling purposes, i don't think its worth having. Anyways, i would love to get your guys thoughts on this subject. Do you find this valuable? |

If it's good stuff go for it, just follow the guy in Generation kill and run with it, that or try to make it lighter

They make Aluminum chain mail now that is substantially lighter.Personally I'd wear it if I was clearing buildings or scavenging. But not if I was traveling. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"They make Aluminum chain mail now that is substantially lighter.Yeah, it's a little unfortunate i didn't have Z day on the mind when i made the decision to purchase the steel rivet mail. But personally, i don't think aluminum would stand up against a zombie bite. It would be interesting to test it. Do you find this valuable? |

Meh, useless back breaker. Some people are into wearing armor, I'm definitely not one of them. Try adding your BOB and whatever weapons/gear you plan on having on Zday around the house for a few hours (or better yet, go hiking in the woods with all your gear), THEN you'll see what a back breaker 25.6 pounds worth of semi-useless metal is. Yeah, I'd kinda vote with leaving it behind. Ideally, you should avoid being a situation where it would be useful, and if you are, running away is most likely a better option.

"Yeah, it's a little unfortunate i didn't have Z day on the mind when i made the decision to purchase the steel rivet mail.Provided it was properly riveted it would work just as well as steel. Do you find this valuable? |

I would be concerned about a hoard catching me because I was slowed down by the weight. I have this image in my head of being covered by zombies who can't bite me, but won't let me up. Dog pile!

"Provided it was properly riveted it would work just as well as steel."See i would hope so, but the human jaw can deal some amazing force, and with the lack of pain a zombie might just have enough power pinch and break the skin from under the mail. All in all, this has been very useful i thank you all for you comments. Do you find this valuable? |
