Alternative Sources of Power
Nov 10 2011, 1:55 AM EST
These last few days iv realized that, well, im pretty much screwed when/if the power goes out on Zday. I dont have any forms of power that could: charge walkies, keep frozen foods frozen, heat my home (it gets cold where im from) or even support my little camp water heater for warm showers. I need a little help in finding a cheap way to maintain voltage for post Zday. What do you guys recommend? Generator? or something a little less... get my a$$ killed scrounging for gas. :P Do you find this valuable? |

There's a few threads on this already, but since it's an important topic i'll toss a few ideas.Self-sufficiency is all about spreading out your power needs so that if one system goes down you aren't ******. Hydro Electric Solar (passive and active) Geothermal Wind fossil fuels (supplemental) biomass You want as many of these systems as possible to help spread out your needs. That way if one system fails, you aren't totally up **** creek. I would advise getting a Diesel generator instead of a gas. And make sure you can run it on methane. Do you find this valuable? |

Where could i find a diesel generator? (besides the net) Do you find this valuable? |

"Yeah i was going threw earlier threads and found a few things that helped me out(guess i should have done that first before posting a new thread), but i agree this is a very important. Most lawn equipment stores deal with generators. An alternative to the diesel genny, IF you are in a forested area, is a gas genny set up to run off of a wood degasifier.. ( This topic has come up a few times also.) The wood degasifier burns wood and the resulting gas from it can run a gas generator. Thus as long as you have trees around you can fuel it. Plus most gas gennies can be run from gasoline or propane.( until you run out) Do you find this valuable? |

"I like that idea since my BOL is pretty deep in the forests of Ontario."With a little effort you can build your own gasifier and you can just port it to the generator yourself. Do you find this valuable? |

Frozen food can be replaced with dehydrated and canned food with a little time cooking.Heating is your biggest problem. A means to heat with simple fossil fuels is a must. Even if it is not a system that you can use pre-apoc (because you have to put an exhaust pipe through the roof, etc) you should still have the means around to get it done. Fossil fuel will keep you cooking as well. Plenty of blankets is a must as well. Do you find this valuable? |

I think that the idea of generators should be avoided altogether. They're way too noisy to make them worth their while, as they will surely attract SOMEthing eVENTually. Anyway, no matter what you do, it won't last forever. You should definitely plan for when the power runs out, for good. How will you heat yourself when the fossil fuels (Also a bad idea to plan around) and electricity are gone for good?

I could always try to construct a makeshift wood burning stove but I'm not sure how much it would help in my little wood shack. It can get to 40degrees (c) below 0 in the winter. I own an industrial heater that can crank out 75,000 BTU but that only good for as long as i have the fuel to run it. I need to really get my sh!7 into gear if im planing to survive Zday lol. " fossil fuels (Also a bad idea to plan around) and electricity are gone for good?"Neither are going to be gone for good. It would take very little effort to produce either. Do you find this valuable? |
