That's a good question and as you specify 'literature' and 'for fun' then I'll nominate Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foucault%27s_Pendulum

But we could widen your question because there are 3 reasons for reading after the event, information, diversion and inspiration. The 1st and 2nd are straight forward. Books on First Aid or the Haynes manual of Landrover maintenance become amazingly compelling reads when the need arises.
Likewise reading for fun, a huge increase in literacy when the lights go out and the screens go dark isn't so much a prediction as a certainty.
But reads for inspiration? For that I suggest something along the lines of Alfred Lansing's 'Endurance' which is the awesome story of Shackleton's disastrous expedition. . . .Endurance, the clue is in the title.

I prefer Eco's -The Name of the Rose-, particularly if you have not wasted your time watching Sean Connery's butchering of the text.

I am thinking that escapist literature would be high in demand - that which offers relief from the state of the world without too much to remind us of the world that is lost:

Maybe Frank Herbert's -Dune- series or Robert Jordan's -The Wheel of Time- series.

I am also fond of Earnest Thompson Seton's writings - particularly -Wild Animals I Have Known-. It has an old place in my heart from childhood.

Name of the Rose is definatly a contender and Dune is a personal favorite too but Foucault's Pendulum is . . . denser. . . and should you be stuck with limited reading that density become a resource as far as re-reading goes.

As it happens I once spent a winter in almost perfect isolation with just four books, one of which was Pendulum. The others were Dickens Bleak House, the dreadful 'a year in Provance' and 'Fordor´s 1972 Guide to Tax Havens'! which after four months I was reduced to trying to read.

Point being Eco's layering of symbolism, semiotics, humour and entertaining story telling means his stuff stands a lot of re-reading.

Any of Don Pendleton's Executioner books. They're not well-written, but they're cheesy fun, and can be stocked up on at any used book store for like 20 cents apiece. Also, there's like 700 of them, so you won't run out any time soon.

On a more serious note, I just got through reading the first two books of the Monster Hunter International series by Larry Correia, and they are EXCELLENT. Think Ghostbusters+every B-grade zombie or monster movie you've ever seen+ a crapload of gunporn. They're just plain ol' fun.

SJ: Loved the Monster Hunter International books - Muy fun!

For hilarious laugh out loud fun I recommend Terry Prachett's Discworld series. It all takes place on a 10,000 mile wide Disc(hence the name) that is supported by 4 giant elephants on the back of a really big Turtle. The writing is not only funny, but filled with wit and wry wisdom. And there's over 30 books in the series. Best of all, they are great to read aloud. Perfect for filling those hours when people are antsy, but it's not safe to move.

Ah, you've read 'em Alice? Cool. Imma have to pick up MH Alpha next time I'm in town.

Also, found a rather cool book the other day. It's one of the first-edition copies I Am Legend, which IMO is classic post-apoc lit.

Play Boy - Hot Zombie Edition.

Realistically; for info. my old Boy Scout Manual, for fun I have wanted to read The Outlaw Josey Whales, I love the movie (wore out a DVD and working on my second), but have never gotten around to read the book.

If you like fantasy, I recommmend R.A. Salvatore's The Legend of Drizzt series and the Hunters Blade Trilogy. It follows the life of a dark elf that comes to the surface to escape the his underground city because unlike his people he has a conscience. I read them while I was in Iraq. There is a lot of action and adventure. Also, he develops the characters so well that it is hard not to relate to them or sympathize for them. It is probably my favorite series Do you find this valuable?

SJ: Richard Matheson! Classic, for sure! With a true stinging insight on what fearsome is all about. Vincent Price did a fair film based on it, called The Last Man On Earth. Good read, middling film.

Agreed. Yeah, I've seen the Vincent Price one, the Charlton Heston one, the Will Smith one, and the Asylum films one with the no-name actor (I Am Omega.) The first 3 are great IMO (though I may be biased because I'm a huge fan of all three actors); the Asylum one sucks.

Also, found the novelization of Dirty Harry not too long ago. That'll be fun to read.

Putting qualities like entertainment value and literary ingenuity aside, I'd recomend Socratic dialogue, or The Republic (both largely by Plato). They're very thought-provoking and requires the reader to philosophise along with it. I think that would help by not merely providing escapism, but by also giving survivors things to think about, and even possibly change the way they act through new learnings. 1000 Nights and a Night (1000 Arabian Nights) It's a story telling a story every night for 1000 nights. If story time becomes a community thing then you're set for a couple years as some of them are way too short. Do you find this valuable?

Yeah, the Drizzt Do'Urden series is pretty good.

My vote is all of the Middle Earth books, definitely Lord of the Rings.

Is that the Burton edition? I've got 16 volumes of the Project Gutenberg 1001 Nights on my computer and it will make the jump to e-reader when I glom onto one.(Thinking of a Xmas gift for ME!) Have to spring for a solar charger at the same time. (Maybe 30 bucks for the Revive.) Uh-hem, back to the topic:

1001 Nights is a real classic, but unless you do an e-reader, it's monstrous. There's 16 hardcover books for the complete thing. Better get it at your BOL before anything goes down. Most editions are severely bowderized, Sir Richard Burton(1st european in Mecca - at least in Victorian times!) translated the most complete edition. However, the Victorians, being pretty uptight, deleted whole books from his translation. That's why you can find single volume 1001 Nights. The Burton edition is actually tame by modern standards, so you don't have to sweat corrupting the kids! lol!

I don't know why I didn't mention this litterary masterpiece before, or why no one else has, for that matter.
It's a work of art which has a place in any list of the greatest books in human history, and I for one would be glad to have it as the last book on earth: Spot The Dog
