Without the group you stand alone. If the group rejects you then it's not the group who is out. It's you.

Now of course this could go easier but if the group decides to tell Rick to take his assertions and sit down Rick either takes his assertions and sits down or he leaves because like it or not the group collectivly offers more that Rick alone does.

It's the classic question. What is a leader if no one follows him? What is a leader if the group does not aknowledge or follow his leadership?"

That said you very well could be right. Lori is not some waif and they weren't exactly on solid footing before. She could be doing the power thing and now she's pretty much stuck with Rick with no one else to work with. I wonder how Michonne is gonna rattle her cage xD
