Since the Marlin 60 is a .22LR, you don't need to run out any buy a high end scope; it'd be wasted money. Believe it or not, I've had decent luck with the cheapo 4x Tasco scope from Walmart. I've seen it priced as low as $6, at least that's what it is running for here. It's not going to compete with a higher dollar scope, but hey, it's $6. Get it mounted straight, use some red fingernail polish to seal the threads on the screws for the scope rings, zero it to 25 yards and don't fiddle with it. It should work just fine for you. The awesome recoil of the .22LR isn't going to break the scope. In fact, the rifle I used said scope on was a Marlin 60 that my buddy was using as a barn gun. The scope had been on there for a few years and worked JUST FINE. Now, if you had a custom benchrest smallbore rifle that cost you two grand, it'd be silly to put a $6 scope on it if you were planning on shooting matches with that rifle. 4 out of 4 found this valuable. I think you couldn't go wrong with a Nikkon Rimfire Classic 4x32. I think they're in the $60 to $80 price range. Now if I could just talk you into a Savage Mark 2 rifle you'd be set. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I bought a cheap Hammers scope at a gun show for $15 and it works fine on my Marlin 22. Its almost identical to the one LJ is talking about. All you need for a plinking gun.

TR, why is the Savage Mark 2 so nice? I've been trying to find a good .308 type rifle.

I think you got ripped off. Someone just mentioned that you could get a Tasco for 6 at Wal-Mart. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Ok definitely not on a .22 LR, but trijicon acogs don't use batteries but have a bright recticle. Perfect for post-Z! (nevermind that they're $700)

That's a damn good point though, BTB. Batteries. Scopes that don't use em would certainly be better than those that do once SHTF.

I'd just pick up a lower priced Bushnell or Nikkon, I've had good luck with Bushnell and even though I haven't owned a Nikkon yet (Fixing to put a ProStaff on my 30-06) I've always been impressed with the quality of even the lower priced Nikkons. I've owned a few Simmons and Tasco optics, aside from a few quirks they were great scopes for the money and would more than serve well on a .22 Whatever you get I'd suggest getting a lower powered, light weight scope. A fixed 4x30 might be a good bet. If you go variable I'd only go as high as 3-9 and I'd really recommend staying around a 2-7 or smaller; there's no use on adding any unnecessary weight to the gun. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Imagine if you bought a few spare batteries and left your sight off most of the time. Your battery life might be longer than your life in that case. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Yeah I think about 3000 hours is the norm in some. But batteries can corrode and spares could be really tough to find. Not to mention ones like the aimpoint PRO do not turn off.

"Yeah I think about 3000 hours is the norm in some. But batteries can corrode and spares could be really tough to find. That's supposed to be the norm with good batteries and on the lower to mid settings. The ACET models are the outstanding ones. The ones that I talked about that go about 50,000 hours or more are ones like the ML3 and the CompMl3 as well as the Mircos and the CompM4. I didn't know you couldn't turn the Pro off though, that sounds like a real deal breaker. Do you find this valuable? |

Disregard that. I they do turn off. I was going off of what a friend had said which was that he doesn't turn it off because the battery is supposed to last 3 years continuously... I knew that sounded Counterintuitive.

Just because it is a .22 doesn't mean you should put a cheap junk scope on it. This rifle will probably be a gun that you will shoot alot so you want a good scope for it.I have an older 3X9 Weaver on my 10/22 and I really ike it. The new Weavers are low quality scopes I think but the older Made in USA ones in my experance are very good scopes I have another almost identical Weaver on a Winchester 320 .22 I've had since I was a kid, never gave me any trouble and I've shot 10s of thousands of shots out of that rifle.I normaly used the scope at the 9 power A 22 can be effective out to 100yds or even more and if you are shooting at small targets you need the higher power. I've always tried to shoot from a rest or at least use my sling and I think the higher power helps you shoot more accurately.....Now if you are shooting at moving targets up close you want a lower power but how often will you be doing that? You can find scopes at a good price on the used market if you look around , I just bought Sunday at the flea market a like new Burris 2X pistol scope for $20 [talked down from $25] that I'm going use on a scout rifle project I'm building. Scope retails for around $225 I think 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"TR, why is the Savage Mark 2 so nice? I've been trying to find a good .308 type rifle."Oh they aren't a super gun or anything. For $140 at Wal-Mart you get a pretty darn accurate rifle out to 100 yrds. Their stock isn't anything to jump up and down about but you can get a nice stock from Boyds for $70. Add a Nikkon scope for $80 and you've got a sweet shooting .22 bolt-action rifle for under $300. If you've got other more powerful options in rifles a bolt-action .22 would be fine IMO. I really like Ruger 10/22s too but for a small game rifle that isn't going to be used for defense I think a bolt-action is fine. I also believe that spending a little extra on a scope for your .22 isn't a bad idea if you can afford it. Think about it? If you're using a .22 for small game you want a rifle that's accurate. Think about how small a rabbit or squirrel is out at a .22's range? Wouldn't you want a nice clear scope that works well in low light for hunting animals that you often hunt at dusk? I've got a Savage 93 R in .17hmr with a bull barrel that I really like. The only thing I'd change is the stock and thats just me being nit-picky. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Slap that little darlin' on a Ruger 10/22 and you'd be makin' beer cans dance like Michael Jackson. Do you find this valuable? |
