AA Maglite thread

This was a very well done page and review.

I have had several AA Maglite's over the years, today I have one in the glove box of both of my cars, one in my night stand, one in my tool box, and one that I carry every day on my belt along with my leatherman wave.

Those little xenon beta lights have mostly replaced the maglite for my small uses. It's brighter, smaller and more durable, if less comfortable to hold. Do you find this valuable?

I actually bought a maglite bulb that was like the little beta lights, it came with a push button switch too.

Now I carry 2 surefires on me at all times. They last longer, are more durable, and much brighter.

The new LED AA Maglites are brighter and the batteries last longer. But I haven't bought one yet to check the difference. Do you find this valuable?

They last a while, but not nearly as long as my surefire.

Dude Surefire's suck when it comes to longevity. I have a G2 and I barely use it, I have already had to replace the bulb. I have 2 Streamlight Stylus lights and they are great.

The Maglite will most definitely last longer than a Surefire

That's because the G2 is a cheap affordable surefire for the masses. I haven't had to replace the bulbs in mine since I bought them 2 years ago. I do agree the Streamlights are awesome. One light that I have just stumpled upon is the Strategos International PEL_6 Secutor, its 120 lumens and this thing is virtually indestructable. This one I dropped off of a 3 story building and not even a scratch on it.

Eh maybe.

I think my next "tactical" flashlight will be one of Streamlights rechargeable models that have the strobe function

Idk about rechargeables. They are like phones, leave them plugged in for too long and your battery life starts to deteriorate.

Yeah, I'll just have to make sure I do not overcharge it.

That or use one that has AA batteries instead of the CR123 batteries

Get one. My BOB has a Minimag LED in it, and the difference in light output between the xenon and LED is HUGE. The LED light in high eats batteries up pretty quick, but it does have a "low" mode, a strobe mode and an SOS mode.

There's nothing wrong with the original minimag, but it just doesn't compare to a more modern torch, except maybe for durability - where it'll probably match anything else out there.

G2, or G2 LED? There is a difference, you know. Compare a G2 LED to a Streamlight Polytac (which is the most relevant product, no?), I believe both have a three hour run time.

http://www.streamlight.com/product/product.aspx?pid=159

I've this G2 LED for a month, give or take on the same set of batteries. I use it every time I need to check a dark corner and the like. I really think you should reconsider your opinions, as the G2 is not anywhere near the same beast as the G2 LED.

On topic, though... I used D-cell, AA and AA Maglites for years, I still have a few, but compared to a quality Streamlight or Surefire, they're just finicky. I've broken the xenon bulbs and LED units before, as well as the various activation setups the lights have. And the lack of a pre-focused reflector and a difficult one-handed activation gets grating (D-cell button type aside.)

I do need to pick up a few LED Maglites to toss in the BOB, though, since they've gotten a lot cheaper in recent years. And a AA or AAA is just going to be easier to find than a CR123A.

EDIT: Typos.

G2 with the P60L bulb. I had to replace the P60 bulb within a year or barely using it. I've had the LED bulb for a few years but like I said, I barely use it. My Polytac is my everyday light Do you find this valuable?
