Practical use for the BOB
Dec 30 2011, 8:17 PM EST | Post edited: Dec 30 2011, 8:17 PM EST
The wife and I were driving to visit our son the other day, hit a patch of ice and landed her car in a field. It being a freakin front wheel drive Honda(not my Jeep) it was going nowhere. Fortunatly I had my handy dandy survival pack.

I used the E tool to dig out the tail pipe and make sure we could start it every hour to get heat. I left her some extra cloths and food to keep warm. packed up what I needed and walked to the nearest place to use a phone(no cell reception of course). I had extra gloves, scarves, and a cover.

Always keep a BOB on you even if it is not the end of the world, it can get your but out of a jam.

These are the things that I carry every day. There aren't many days that go by that I don't use something out of my kit. I do need to learn to pack more supplies in my vehicle though. Thanks for the lesson on why I should.

I call that my GHB or "get home bag". my BOB is at home in the event that we need to leave quick, fast, and in a hurry.

Here's a list of whats in my little improvised kit.

The cell phone case sits on my left hip and the fixed blade knife sits on my right hip most days. When I'm out with the wife and kids I have to admit its sitting in the center console in our SUV.

Nobody ever says anything about the fixed blade. When its in its sheath and you've got a set of vice grips in the front pouch nobody sees it as anything other than what it is. Another tool.

There is nothing in there specifically for survival. The lighter I added even gets used at work for burning brush piles and lighting heaters.

I've always thought that tool belts and tool organizers would make good carry packs post-apoc. They'd keep the things you need and use most within arms reach and not on your back in a pack where they're inconvienient to get a hold of.

EE is correct my termnology is incorrect. What I carry when I travel is not truly a BOB, I call it an "Oh Shoot" bag to help with short term emergencies and to get home. At home I have an armoire with two ALICE packs for wife and self that are grab and go that are truly BOBs that are more survival oriented.

Like TR I have EDC that I carry in a brief case/messenger bag. I wear a jacket tie or a suit everyday so having something like that blends well. My son gave me a Maxpedition briefcase that looks to be great I dont know yet.
