2012, Now or Never

It's been an interest of mine for quite some time to prepare and plan for the unforeseen emergency situation. I've scavenged the net for advice and bits of information on many sites, but Zombie Survival has to be, without doubt, the most informative (combined with entertaining) station of ideas I've found.

Being the first day of 2012, what better time to get more serious about a plan and getting informed on situations of survival. Since I have been visiting this site for sometime now, I decided it was also time that I offer much deserved appreciation to many of you that contribute here on a regular basis and offer an introduction of myself and a few thoughts.

I've no where near covered all the topics and pages here, so forgive me if at first my posts seem obvious to the regs and/or redundant.

Survival to me, is essentially to keep things simple. IMO over thought of any one item can be a deadly or at least a very uncomfortable way of learning a valuable lesson in reality. For example: Food, water and shelter are the basic necessities of life, but are you planning to wipe your butt with oak leaves for months on end?..lol. Ok, bad example, but you understand my point. I've read many topics concerning medical needs and advice, but I know that for my family and myself, we mos def need to learn a great deal more about first aid and illness. I was also reading what some of you guys have in your BOBs, and I have to admit you guys have your act together.

I have a walk in closet in my home that I have devoted to the supplies we may need when and if the SHTF. In there I have a surplus of weapons, ammo, food, water and other gear that I wouldn't need or use on a daily basis. My key word there is "surplus". We try to avoid buying "one" of anything these days.

Again, I just wanted to say thanks, and I'll be looking forward to talking to you in the near future.

Though I'm hardly what you might call a regular; let me welcome you to ZSDW . I know that I have learned a lot from the old hands, and hope to add to the good ideas I've found here. I really recommend reading the pages for newbies, if you haven't already. Lots of good ideas there...and I've been into survivalism since Hector was a pup. Welcome aboard! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Sounds like you have a great start. It appears you have a good understanding of the essential 4. Sounds like you will be bugging in.

I recommend you and your wife take the lifesaving courses available from Red Cross. I think you can get these at your local YM(W)CA. There is usually a small fee.

Dont forget to visit our Newbie pages if you havent already.

So welcome, have fun and enjoy your time here!

Having worked in hospitals and as a nurse previously, my advice with regards to medical treatment is to learn how to treat a wound, if you don't already. It's very simple and there are tons of videos on youtube.
Learning to stitch a wound is also surprisingly simple, and also on youtube. It wouldn't take long to learn what to do with a broken bone, either.

Regarding drugs, however, I just don't know how to advise you because I'm not a doctor or a pharmacist. Can you buy anti-biotics in the us without prescription? I don't think you can over here, but I have a nice stockpile of medication and medical supplies with pretty much everything I know how to use and in what situations.

Btw, any chance of a pic or video of your walk-in wardrobe/survival store?

In the USA any serious antibiotic is by prescription. All the OTC stuff is pretty much just vitamins and febrifuge, maybe some pain relief.

Sugar and honey are good topical antibiotics. Astringents, while not antibiotics, are good to use on minor wounds since they block entry to microorganisms. "A Modern Herbal" by M. Grieve is a great resource.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. ;0) I have read over the newbie pages and will continue to read through others. I try to search for answers for my questions and avoid making obvious comments, but I'm sure I'll be guilty of that soon enough..lol.

As stated, the medical aspect is very important to us, but my monetary concentration is (currently) going toward a good supply of food, water, filtration and ammunition.
Mark, a pic of the "locker" isn't a possibility..lol..sorry, but I'll get some examples of things we're working on and post a pic later.
Zee, you're right. Everything we have accumulated so far includes the basics for bugging in and I dig the sugar and honey antibiotic advice, thanks.

Entertaining the 12/21/12 scenario, we found that we "should" be in a safe zone according to the Edgar Cayce maps, however, we do have a bug out plan if the need arises.

Thanks again for the advice!
ttys,
derek
